I ordered these in hopes of replacing my previous pair of amazing Merrell women's waterproof boots, but it didn't work out. They are comfortable and true to size--I usually wear an 8 in boots of any type--and the 8 fit me fine. However, they were not wide enough in the calf to fit me comfortably! I wasn't even wearing jeans, tights, or socks, because I tried them on at home. Obviously, this won't do. I was surprised because I am 5'0", 120 pounds, and I don't have skinny calves but I'm generally a "petite" woman. I suppose this is because there's no goring at the top like for my old boots. Also they are higher in the front than the back, which resulted in the top of the boot grazing just below my kneecap. Too tall for me, and definitely too tight, had to return.

These boots have seen me through the last couple falls and winters. I absolutely love them. Walked all over Paris, pregnant, in December, and they were incredibly comfortable, warm, and waterproof. I have both colors and would buy any more they made.

I bought these boots in brown. They are warm and waterproof and have plenty of foot support. I ordered a black pair in the shorter version, the Captiva buckle down, and just returned them because they were so big around the calf and then re-ordered a 2nd pair of the taller Captiva Buckle Up in black. The only complaint I have seen online is that the calves are snug. They are a little, but the boot is insulated all the way to the top. I want it to be snug to hold in my body heat when it is freezing cold outside, like today when the wind is gusting 25 mph and cuts like a knife. With wool socks and corduroy leggings, these boots still zip up just fine. I am 5'5", 145 lbs. and definitely not thin. Women with bigger calves would do well to order the buckle down version, where there is plenty of room. This is a great boot. Love it enough to buy two pairs.

These boots are exactly what I was looking for. They are very comfortable, supportive, and stylish. They look great with skinny jeans and skirts. The calf part is not huge like on many boots. So if you have large calves these boots will be tight. I have average calves...with skinny jeans...the fit is perfect in the calves. Great quality, so nice to not have to spray them with water protection spray! My heels are a bit narrow...many boots slosh around on my feet...these fit perfectly.

Bought these to take on a recent trip to Ireland. They were absolutely amazing. Super comfortable to walk around all day in and waterproof! Plus they look awesome as well! I would highly recommend them!

I live in an area that has very wet winters, and I wanted to find a boot that would look good but still be functional, so I was really excited that these are waterproof. I've worn Merrell shoes in the past and always found them comfortable, and these didn't disappoint. They aren't the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn, but they didn't seem to need any breaking in so I suspect they will only get better as I wear them more. They are very tight on my calves and I have a bit of trouble zipping them up, but I have big calves and knew they would be tight. I also have a bit of an issue with the ankle hurting when I wear skinny jeans, but thus far I've managed to adjust them so that they are comfortable. I ordered a size up so that I could wear thick socks, but I'm not sure I could zip them up if I wore tall thick socks. Overall I'm happy and would recommend them.

As others have noted, the circumfrence of the boot shaft is rather narrow. In fact, I initially sent back a pair of size 8 (generally my 'normal' boot size) to see if an 8.5 would make a difference (the shoe itself felt a little tight as well, so going up a half size was not an issue in that regard). Here's what I recommend: DO NOT TRY THESE BOOTS ON WITH BARE LEGS. Bare legs for the first try-on make it impossible to zip these up since they're so snug. With a pair of skinny jeans on, was able to just zip up the boots -- which seems counterintuitive (since it adds a layer), but it makes it easier since you're not worrying about leg skin. Yes, they were still quite snug, but not uncomfortable at all. Since I've been wearing them regularly, they have stretched a bit and now they're easy to zip up over both jeans and leggings. I haven't tried bare legs yet :) That is the beauty of real leather and I imagine why Merrell made the shaft a little tighter than one might expect. They are perfect for winter. I have not had any issues with waterproofing -- sometimes my feet have felt *cold*, but never *wet* (good socks are important!). They are very comfortable and perfect for city living on the upper east coast. I will caution that the tread on these boots is not robust. I have slipped on packed snow and ice.

I loved the old version of this boot and don't know why Merrell had to mess with a good thing. These boots are so tight on my calves, I couldn't get the zipper up half of my calf.

These are excellent boots! I wanted knee-high-ish (I'm 5'9" so most boots are too short for me) and these hit a couple of inches below the knee and that's fine. I also wanted waterproof but breathable, buckles that are more biker than cowboy, something that can go with skinny jeans, leggings, and skirts too. These fulfill all my requirements. One thing I wasn't planning on is that the insoles are removable so I can use my orthotics in them for much better arch support. I have many issues with my feet: arthritis as well as I recently broke my foot and tore ligaments and I need shoes with good structure but soft uppers. Again, these are perfect. And they look pretty snazzy too!

These boots are the culmination of a multi-year search for tall, flat leather boots that don't slouch and fit my calves. That they aren't officially a wide-calf variant and -still fit- is a marvel to me and a delight. They're very comfortable, the source of many compliments, and are indeed at least rain and puddle proof so far. I love them, and will probably buy a second pair, just as backup for when I wear out the first set.

These are EXACTLY what I've been seeking: Matte black boot, sporty/casual to pair with jeans or skirts, that can stand up to snow/slush, and that does not look floppy on my calves. "Hip Hip Huzzah" says this narrower-calved woman! They do run a big large; I am almost always a 9.5 (and have other Merrells in that size), but ended up trading these for a 9 and I still have room for thicker socks and jeans. Looking forward to wearing these stylish puppies all winter long. Thank you Zappos for the "search by circumference" feature & fast easy shipping!

I have very small calves and these are the best fit I've found so far although I do wish they were a little more fitted. I can get about two fingers in when zipped. These are very comfortable and keep my legs warm during these cold winter months. Love that they are waterproof. I do wish there were more color options in the tall "buckle-up" boot! I've had them in black for about two months and am now purchasing them in brown and trying the buckle-down style in red. Highly recommend if you have smaller calves and struggle to find boots that don't leave a huge gap!

I love these boots! I live in the Boston area and they have held up through the snow, slush and ice. They are totally waterproof and quite warm. I've walked long distances in them and they are very comfortable. I wear a 9.5/40 shoe and I ordered a ten to accommodate socks and they are a great fit. Also I have received many compliments on their style.

I absolutely love these Merrell boots. They are knee high with a lovely angle at the top. I fell in love with the finish which is not shiny at all. They look lovely with my tights and mini skirt. I wear an exact 9-1/2 and the fit with an average sock is perfectly snug but not tight. There is no slip in the heel. There is no extra room in the shoe in case you are a 9-3/4. You might want to size up. They feel so comfortable, too! I totally love them. What a great find! Get them, you won't be disappointed.

I love this boot! They are great on the slippery ice and snow, so comfortable, fit my 13 inch calf and don't look like I'm wearing buckets and very cute. If you have more athletic calves, they may be too tight. If not, go for them. You won't be sorry. Wore them all day, first day I had them, and comfy all day. I normally wear a size 8 and that's what I bought, fit great. I bought the black and they are just beautiful. Wish I had gotten them at the beginning of the season. My favorite winter boot, maybe my favorite boot ever!

I've worn these boots for two seasons, and they don't show a bit of wear. They were comfortable from the start. I worn them in Paris in the winter through 3 inches of slush. My feet were warm and dry. They are very neutral and didn't feel too clunky among the chic French boots. I highly recommend them, and will be coming back for another pair, just so I have them if & when mine wear out.

I tested these boots on a very rainy day and they are really waterproof, and my feet do get too warm for comfort. The shaft is a little stiff, maybe the leather will soften up with more wear. Ample space in toe box even with my orthotics. The style simple, clean, and versatile.

This is a beautiful boot! Too bad I could not zip it up. I really tried! I am 5'1" and 110 lbs. I have athletic calves, 15". There was no way this boot was going to fit my calves! I'm so bummed as I love these boots and have been looking for something stylish and comfortable. Oh well. I'll keep looking!

I was expecting to try these on and feel just one more uncomfortable boot, but when I pulled them on, I was absolutely shocked at how comfortable these were! The insoles are great as they are, but I was also pleasantly surprised to find that I could easily take them out and replace them with my PowerStep insoles without making them too tight. I have thin calves, and while they are not tight against my legs, they are much slimmer than many other boots out there. I bought them in black, and I was pleased that they did not look like 'motorcycle boots', which I find is often the case with black boots. Part of this is because the buckle is also matte black, not shiny. If you are big on appearance AND comfort, these boots are definitely worth trying!

I love the Merrell Captiva. I wanted to keep the black pair. I much prefer the old style. I have them in brown and they are perfect. these new have a seam up the front I don't care for and so much strap and buckle around the ankle. A lot going on....the top of the boot is angled too, I don't like the way it looks or feels when I walk. Why do company's change a good thing!

This boot was manufactured wrong. The calves are too tight. I had to take them to a shoemaker twice to have them stretched. I first ordered an 8, then sent them back and exchanged for a size larger. This made no difference. The calves are still too tight. There was no change in calve size from one size to another. This is a manufacturer's flaw. I usually love Merrell products but this boot was a total strikeout. It looks good, but if it doesn't fit what difference does that make?
