I have waited to write a review on this coat because I wanted to live in it for at least a month first. When I first opened up this coat I thought it was awfully light weight and thin which worried me. I called marmot and they explained its 700 down fill meant that it was going to be light weight but would affect the warmth. I decided to trust them and I tried it - it fit perfectly. I bought an xs in black - for reference I am 5'4 and my weight can vary between 110-115lbs. I am very petite, flat chested and carry most of my weight in my bottom half. The fit of this coat is very flattering and I have enough room to comfortably layer sweatshirts and sweaters underneath if I wanted to. The fleece lined pockets are great and even on 20 degree days I can shove my hands in them if I forget gloves and I am completely fine. So about the actual function of this coat - I live in Boston and walk to work every day so I truly did my research to find a coat that would help me survive this winter. We have had wind, rain, sleet, snow and temperatures ranging from below zero to 45 degrees so far this winter (gotta love new England weather) and I can honestly say that this coat has not failed me once in any situation. Don't be fooled by its light weight build - this coat will keep you toasty warm, it's breathable and is absolutely water/wind resistant (I walk over a bridge on my commute). I personally think the hood is wonderful and even in extremely strong winds it stays on my head. Yes, the jacket does make a bit of a squeaky sound and at first it was aggravating me for a few days. Then I realized that most down coats make at least some type of swishy sound (as I pass many fellow down coat commuters on my way to work) and that I wasn't going to give up on an amazing coat and being protected from the elements because of it making a sound. Also, it doesn't make the noise when I walk. It's mostly just when I am slipping my arms through when putting on the coat. Hope this review helps if you are looking into purchasing this coat!

I researched and tried all the top brands except Canada Goose. This jacket is a dream. I have a big chest and a belly but the large ( 38D 157) makes me look elegant and cute. This coat is fantastically warm. It was 30 below in Chicago the other day and I still felt warm. Plus it's waterproof. It's shedding a few feathers but nothing major.

I wanted a long down coat that was waterproof and this seems to fit the bill, plus the I trust the brand name being a skier myself. The coat has a nice length below my knee (5'3"), beautiful color, rich, furry collar, 3/4 way around face, but it doesn't have any adjustments for the depth, so my face is so far in, the fur blocks my field of vision. Yes, you can unbutton it off, and the hood is nicely insulated. 2 way, zipper only goes down to thigh length, there is a snap button on the bottom. The water really does bead off the jacket when I sprinkle on it, and did NOT feel wet at all. It is very, very warm when I tried it on. I did not experience the noise that everyone was complaining about. The reason why I returned this coat is that the upper part of the coat is for those with well-endowed chests! There was just too much space and puffed up in that area. Oh well, I really wanted this to work, the search continues.

This jacket is a solid B but for the price I feel like it should be more of an A. It is perfectly fine and fits true to size but the two outside pockets are small and it lacks details one would expect at this price from this brand. Specifically, it does not have any sort of chin guard material (fleece/flannel or pile) on the inside of the collar -- just the nylon of the jacket, which is very uncomfortable against skin and causes chapping/irritation when it gets cold/wet. Also the zipper that holds the hood on seems flimsy and was sort of not staying zipped all the way, as if the weight of the hood when it was off was causing it to come unzipped a little -- there needs to be snaps or some sort additional thing rather than just a single skinny zipper to hold on the hood. I feel like Marmot just phoned it in with this one -- returning it.

This coat is attractive and all I wanted in a coat, yet the sound that is made as the inner insulated later rubs against the outer fabric is loud...an actual squeak (much more than a little one, too!) with every little move, as the two layers move against/over each other. There is no way that I would wear this coat for the noise that it makes. I love Marmot products, but I cannot believe that no one in the designing or making of this coat missed the noise that the actual finished product makes. There is no question that I will return this coat. Long live Marmot, but not a noisy coat.

Great fit and very warm. I was looking for a well fitted but durable coat for these rough Chicago winters. This was EXACTLY what I wanted. It is very sleek and and water resistant is a bonus. The hood works great at blocking any snow or water from hitting my face as I walk. Def get this coat!

I was hesitant to buy this coat after reading the mixed reviews, but I'm so glad I'd did. I looooooove this coat. It is perfect for winter walking on the beach. My other coats have huge hoods which catch the wind like a sail. Also, my other goose down coats are not rain proof. This coat hits me at I'd thigh and is very warm without making me sweat. The hood keeps my ears warm and doesn't catch any wind (see picture of me facing into a 25mph wind). The neck zips up high to shield the lower half of my face. I had to get used to the fur being so close to my eyes, but I adjusted quickly. I'm 5.9 and 194lbs and bought an XL.

I have never had a down coat before so this is a bit of a different style for me. It is super warm! But also light, and not too bulky (which I was worried about). I like the shape and fit. It's very cozy and feels stylish and functional at the same time. The fleece lined pockets are amazing. I did immediately remove the faux fur lining on the hood because I don't like how it looks - but then I found the hood is not deep enough to fully cover my head. So that is unfortunate and really the only gripe I have with this coat.

So glad I got this coat! I looked at the sizing chart on the Marmot website, and originally ordered the XXL from Zappos. I'm 5"9', 210lbs, a 14-16 depending on the brand, and a DD. The XXL was definitely too big, so I ordered the XL (another reason I ordered from Zappos--free shipping and returns). The XL fits nicely. I don't wear heavy sweaters, so I'm not worried about it being snug with multiple layers. Plus, the coat is SO warm, that I think, even on the coldest days, I would be TOO warm if I really layered up! I loved that the sleeves were long enough. Also, the materials this coat is made of are higher quality that other brands that may cost a hundred dollars or so less. The faux fur, to me, doesn't look or feel cheap, and it's removable if you don't care for the look. The coat is waterproof, so it does make a slight "squeaking" noise as other reviewers have noted. It doesn't bother me at all. I noticed it the first few minutes I walked around in the coat, and then forgot about it. I have to walk around a large university campus in Pennsylvania. I'm willing to deal with an almost non-existent "squeak" if a coat is going to keep me warm and dry. Also, this coat is super slimming! I like that the logo is on the sleeve, too. It keeps the coat looking a bit more chic rather than sporty.

I am 5 feet and weight 92lbs. I ordered both SM and XS. The SM is big on me. The XS fits nicely with enough room to layer a thick fleece sweater. Although the sleeves are little too long but it looks fine. The shape of this coat looks and fits much nicer than the NorthFace Artic Parka. I haven't wore it outside yet so I can't say about the warmth. Also, I made four exchanges in this coat and now I am happy with the XS. I have to give Zappos' customer service an excellent rating because they make shopping a very pleasant experience.

This is a great coat. I’m 5’5, 125lbs. My shoulders are a little more squared off than average. I was nervous about ordering a small, but going by some of the other reviews I did. I definitely couldn’t go smaller in that area, but it is roomie enough in the other areas to wear a cpl thin layers if you need. I live in Minneapolis and need a warm coat. I don’t like looking like I’m wearing a sleeping bag. This coat is the closest I’ve found that has some style and warmth. The outer pockets are great, keep your hands warm with thin gloves. I would like a small outer breast pocket, there isn’t one. And a way to cinch the bottom a little. It has an A line shape to it. The hood is cozy. But it you have a lot of hair or a pony tail it can be a little tight. Overall a great buy.

I simultaneously purchased the Marmot Chelsea and the Arc'teryx Patera Parka (each in 2 sizes X and XS) because I was looking for something warm and knee-length. I really wanted the Patera because of how great everyone said they looked wearing it, but after using the Chelsea once or twice, the Patera felt like a cheap, uncomfortable, significantly less warm alternative, which also happened to cost $300 more. The Chelsea XS fits me well. I'm 5'3", 110-115 lbs. The lining in the pockets and cuff is very comfortable. All the zippers are sturdy and I have no concern that they'll ever give up on me. There's enough room to comfortably wear a thick sweater underneath, but I doubt I'll need it, the coat is extremely warm. I'm always cold but the Chelsea almost gets me to a sweat in upstate NY (my comfortable thermostat temperature is 75). The collar protects your neck without hurting your chin, something the Patera really failed at. A lot of reviews complain about the unflattering silhouette of this coat. I wore both this and the Patera (which supposedly enhances your feminine curves). The difference was minimal. The Chelsea is admittedly roomier around the torso, but it's not like the Patera managed to make me look any better, despite the fact that it compromises on a lot of warmth to achieve that slight silhouette-enhancing effect, and leaves no room for layering. You'd have to size up to S in Arc'Teryx to have the same layering ability as the XS in Marmot, but then you lose the shaping effect of the former. I'm very happy to keep the Chelsea. It's built to last, soft all over (comfortable enough that I fell asleep in it on the couch), and I look forward to using it for many winters to come. And of course, hats off to Zappos' excellent service!

I tried 3 different coats and ended up going with this one (over North Face's Arctic Parka and a parka by LL Bean). It had the nicest silhouette -- looked the most stylist on -- and the hood fit better and was more functional than the others. It's thinner than I what I planned to get but is warm enough for urban commuting purposes. On days when I stand outside for hours while my son ice skates, I will be adding extra fleece layers... but I tend to be cold all of the time (even in the summer).
I'd also recommend:

This coat arrived yesterday and I am extremely happy with my purchase. It is gorgeous and very well made. I chose the Platinum color which is a lovely neutral that will go with everything. I have been wearing a North Face Metropolis Parka the past few years - as soon as I slipped this one on I immediately felt the difference in terms of warmth, materials and fit. This coat is much more feminine and will allow for easy transition from business to casual. Unlike the other reviewer, I didn't have a problem with size. I'm not a small woman (I usually wear a L or size 12). I went with the XL to allow for layering. I was a little worried it was going to be huge, but I wore it over a sweater to work this morning and the fit was perfect. This is my first Marmot coat but I have a feeling this won't be my last. Very impressed.

Five years in and I still wear this coat daily in the cold Northern Michigan winters, ALL winter long. It's my favorite coat, and the one I wear both to work and for play!

Liked the color, liked the style, but it was too long for me. I usually wear xs, and thought for sure the small would be too big, but I was wrong, small was the right size. I’m 5’4” 115 lbs.

I am going to Norway in January and have been searching for a non-puffer winter jacket to keep me nice and toasty on those cold Norwegian days (and nights!). This was the last jacket I tried on, after 8 other ones from various brands. This jacket was EXACTLY what I was looking for! This fit is so, so flattering with the narrowing at the waist, the faux fur is detachable, and most importantly, it's very warm! I'm 5'8", with an athletic build, small waist, and a 32 DD chest. The medium fit me perfectly; I'm able to layer and have the jacket still fit well, but not too snug with all the clothing. I highly recommend this jacket for anyone looking for a warm, flattering, and cute winter jacket!

Ordered this jacket as a replacement for a heavy Columbia jacket that had seen better days. As some reviewers have stated, this Chelsea jacket is: Warm, comfortable, a little squeaky and noisy, and the hood is a smidge weird. My main desire was warmth and length. I ordered a medium to allow for sweater or layers underneath and it fits well. I'm 5'6, 135lbs. Someone mentioned the hood was huge and someone else said too small. It's a weird combo of both. You can't see well out of your peripheral if you extend the hood all the way, meaning unfold the fur. I have a big head and found that while the hood isn't snug, it doesn't necessary flop around either. I wore this during a chilly, snowy weekend in DC and it fit the bill. I would recommend.

I am 5'6 and usually wear a size 14 -- the XL fit perfectly, with a little room for extra layers. I am sad to say I'm returning this one, I had such high hopes, but the coat is just too plain for me. Very warm and comfy, but I really want something a bit prettier. Note that the Arctic Navy is a true dark navy color.

I should have listened to the reviews. The coat itself is fine. I especially liked the quilted lining. Unfortunately, the hood is disproportionately small. It looks weird and feels snug. This would be a dealbreaker for me, even at a far lower price. My recommendation is to heed the reviews and save yourself the trouble of ordering and returning this coat.

I ordered this in XS and the fit was very good (I am f ft 3” and weigh 103 lb). The noise issue (of the fabric) that others have noted was not a big deal. However, the hood is a strange size and fit—too small and strange-looking and the fact that this coat doesnt zip to the bottom (just to the thigh makes no sense). Also as another reviewer noted, this coat is very a-lined which though a flattering look does not provide good cold protection (especially with that 3/4 length zipper). Finally, this coat was definitely shedding feathers right out of the packaging. Not a good sign! Sent this back!

The jacket looks nice, but like many of the reviews say, it is strangely noisy! I've never heard a jacket make the weird squeaking noise this one does. And the hood is freakishly small and looks weird on. Sadly, I'm returning it.

The jacket is really nice quality. I didn’t notice any noise to it like other reviewers. The hood is a little weird, but not a dealbreaker. It’s light, warm and a good cut. I hated the steel onyx color and the black wasn’t on sale, so back it goes!

Great coat, was just a bit too big. I got a medium which is usually good, but I'm average/small chested at 5'6", so air was coming right in and made it cold. Hood/neck especially warm and snug. Doesn't really feel like the warmest down overall- not enough for the subzero temps in Chicago, but stylish. Will work in a smaller size, and with another warm layer underneath.

I was deciding between this coat and the marmot Montreaux and ended up keeping the Montreaux. The Chelsea coat was not flattering, despite being fitted, and the chest especially felt very large. The zipper didn't go all the way down to the bottom of the coat, and instead ends several inches before. There's a snap at the bottom, but I still felt it would let wind through. That said, if the coat had fit, I may have overlooked that problem, because I do like the style a lot.
