My old winter jacket was a super-bulky down comforter-type jacket that made me feel like the Michelin Man and was too hot and cumbersome when going indoors. I am very happy with the Alpine Action jacket. I usually wear a men's small or medium. I am 6' and thin with longer legs than turbo - the small in this jacket fits me well. It is long enough to cover the groin area - an issue I had with my older, shorter jacket on cold, windy days.
I like how warm this jacket is despite how thin it is. Not quite as warm as my old down comforter jacket, but I can add an extra layer below on days in the deep freeze - thankfully I have never had to go back to my old bulky jacket on even the coldest days. This waterproof jacket is great for the cold rain & snow, while still allowing you to move around and not get too hot when you are physically active. The jacket makes the the transition to the warmth of indoors okay - it doesn't feel hot and bulky right away like my old jacket it. There are no armpit zips in the Alpine Action jacket, but I don't feel like I need them.
The zippers work well and there are plenty of pockets.
The collar does rub your chin when zipped up all the way, but I don't mind on very freezing days as I want the protection from the wind. I can unzip some at the top if it isn't as cold out.
I wish the hood was warmer - no omni-heat in there. Columbia probably assumes you will have a hat for colder weather and I usually do. If you forget your hat on a very cold day your head may not be warm enough with the hood only.
I love the a subtle pattern that make the jacket a little more interesting then a completely solid color. The Nocturnal color is a purplish-blue. It is not made with down, so no feathers to appear on my clothes.
The chest zipper-pocket is good for storing a hat. The only other minor quibble I have is I wish the chest zipper were a similar color as the rest of the jacket instead of a bright white as I so no need to make the chest zipper stand out so much - especially if I leave it unzipped.
Please note it does not have the attachments to make it an interchange jacket.
Overall I am very happy with the Alpine Action jacket!

Received this jacket size L. Loved the weight, the construction, and the sleeve length was perfect. Sleeve length has always been the issue with fit for me. 6-0, 195lbs. Unfortunately, it was a little tight across the chest and armpits and I returned it. Mulling over whether to order the XL.

I am 5'9 and 160 and normally medium is my size, however I had to return it and move down to a small to get a good fit. Other than that the coat seems very nice and comfortable.

I love this jacket. keeps me warm, dry, and comes with style. down in the south it doesn't get too cold but when it does, this is my go to jacket. it does run a little big but I am a short guy. (5'5"-5'6") I would say the only thing that keeps it from being 5 stars is that the hood isn't as insulated as the jacket. other than that I will wear this jacket everyday.

Bought this jacket in Black. It is more on the blue shade, not a true black. Disappointed. Will return

Sirts, I had to return my jacket because of a problem I had with the material in the front pockets..thats the only issue..have chapped hands in winter and when I first put my hands in the pockets I knew immediately I couldn't use the jacket..if felt as if my hands were Velcro in the front pockets..I own two other Columbia jackets and love them..the other pockets on the jacket were fine..but I couldn't stand using the front pockets on the jacket.
other than that issue I thought it was a great jacket ..just poor selection of material for two front pockets.

When I ski with this jacket, all I need is a T-shirt under it if it is over 32 degrees. Super warm jacket.

Had this jacket for about a month in a really cold winter so far, about 5 - 30 degrees.
Pros:
warm
nice pockets, features
materials feel high quality
not puffy
Cons:
fits large- I am 6'3" and about 195 lbs, and I always fit a large perfectly... this is quite baggy, leaves a lot of extra space for sweaters and is very long, which that I don't mind for skiing/snowboarding.
the collar is very stiff and goes up past my mouth, it's actually annoying as it rubs your face a bit, and you really can't bend it back.
All in all a great value for a ski jacket. I recommend it.

The jacked is as expected as far as design and quality. It's getting harder and harder to figure out the difference between the models, though that's not necessarily a bad thing - just go after what is priced better and which colors you like more. This time, this jacked is almost identical to another Columbia model, which was slightly cheaper and, more importantly, fit better.
Main issue with this jacked is sizing. Columbia generally runs a bit larger, but this one was really odd - sleeves were the right size, but the jacked itself was humongous. Ended up having to return it and get a different model.
NOTE: It'd really help if they start mentioning the weight and height of their models - this way, it'd be much easier to identify the correct size. Other brands have been doing it for quite some time and it helps.

Love the jacket overall but the redesigned interior lining ( termed curtain) which requires snapping in various ways was confusing, impractical and useless. So I returned the jacket.

I ordered a large Alpine Action jacket, because I could not find a medium in the local Columbia outlet stores. I was disappointed in the size because the large was too large. I settled on another style, but the gap between a medium and a large is quite a bit.

I bought this jacket online, and it came with a weird smell. I sensed it as soon as I took it out of the bag. I returned it at the store and bought a good smell one there.

I'm 5'9" and 190 pounds, but in pretty good shape. It's a really nice-looking jacket and has a lot of features. As other reviewers have pointed out the sleeves are quite long. Reading some of the comments, I bought a medium, which was good for length but too tight for skiing. The large, which I got subsequently is a bit loose, and I have to use the velcro around the sleeves or they feel too long, but will allow more movement with something under it. I note that on this, our first cold day, there also seems to be an area of heat leakage around the upper back.

Nice jacket but with the reputation of Columbia i expected ir to be warmer. Its not terrible, but with a windchill of 10 degrees, i could feel the chill on my arms. For me, it was a bit more form fitting than I expected but still fit and was moveable.

Very nice ski jacket, the only problem is that the size is not accurately described. I bought medium but in reality it's a large size. Many reviews mention the same problem. If I knew it, I'd buy small size instead. That's my only complaint.

Well made, good looking, runs large I normally wear a medium . It's acgood thing that it runs large so I can layer under it because it is not warm for me. Taking a walk on a day with temps around 38 with a cotton t shirt and a fleece pull over I was cool. I'm sure it will not be very warm on a ski slope on a day in the low 20's.

I'm unhappy with the fit. This is not the first Columbia jacket I have and this is one is way too baggy. I purchased it due to mismatch of colors advertised online and in real life, and was underwhelmed with the fit. Previous jacket was a better fit though.
I'm out of time to return or get anything different instead, so Columbia let down twice and I'm unhappy about it.

This was my first order from Columbia, and unfortunately not impressed. First the delivery took a very long time. The jacket does not look bulky and not sure if it would resist New England cold. But the most important fact is its size. This is definitely noways a SMALL size. It runs like L. I am returning it and not sure if I will buy columbia jacket again.
