I've gone through three pairs of GTX 106s. They were by far the best trail running and all round trail shoes I've ever had. They were perfect in nearly all conditions. The 106s were very well constructed and all three are still 100% intact and functional, albeit in a diminished capacity due to tread wear. When I saw the 106s were replaced by the 109s I was frantic when I could not find 106s anywhere, but went ahead and ordered the 109s. Upon inspection it was obvious VF Corp saved some money on the construction of the 109s. I tried them on and they were comfortable but required a break-in. I did some moderate hikes and runs and was satisfied, though I knew I was in a cheaper shoe. However, when they were 3 weeks old I spent a weekend hiking Linville Gorge and the adhesive from the sole to the midsole failed on both shoes. I'm returning them. Very disappointed they wrecked the perfect shoe.

After three pairs of the 106 from REI, I went to REI for another, but found the 109 on the shelf instead. Tread is identical, upper is similar, basic sizing/fit seemed the same (12/12), so I got a pair of 109s. Having worn them past break-in, I'm returning the 109s because the on-the-trail feel is completely different from the 106. Specific differences include that I feel rocks more than with the 106, and that the throat closes together more when snugging the laces, suggesting the upper is cut way different (not the same last?). Overall not as comfortable.

Wear them daily for years. Buy two pair at a time and on third cycle. Thinking of buying a bunch in case they stop making them. Expect to die with these on my feet....not boots

Great fit!
Very comfortable shoes. Very sturdy. I am 6’7 and feel like I am well supported. They look even better in person. I would buy them again!

Zappos' mens shoe size chart says US 11.5 is 28.3cm. This size 11.5 shoe says it is 29.5cm - that is a big difference! So it runs big.

I bought this shoe for a recent backpacking trip in the Sierra, based on the review on Outdoor Gearlab. After decades of hiking in boots, the Ultra 109 is a game changer for me and I'll never return to boots. I like everything about this shoe, except its durability. The lugs and outsole show significant degradation after only 5 days & 45 miles with a light pack in the backcountry - all on trail. At this rate, they will be toast after 100 miles. Unfortunately, I can't see replacing them and will have to look for a higher-quality alternative that offers greater long-term value.

I have had these shoes for over a year now, and wear them once or twice per week for hiking and rock climbing. They look great. The waterproofing is outstanding. I have gone hiking in very wet and muddy conditions, and they keep my feet dry. They have been very durable considering the amount of strenuous hiking I have done over the past year throughout the Southwest and Appalachians. The cushioning is very good for hiking shoes. However, they are extremely narrow around the ball of the foot and the toes. My toes are always bruised and in a great deal of pain after each hike (usually 6-10 hours). I got them a half size larger than my foot size, and the salesperson told me that they would be more comfortable after they were broken in, but that has not occurred. I can't wait until I can afford another pair of hiking shoes, and I will definitely not be buying these again.

Wears out very quickly. Mesh is cut from the top, the glue is coming off after just couple of tough hikes. The soul has started chipping off. Traction is very poor, it easily slips on we surface. I would never buy them again. I have started looking elsewhere for my next hiking shoes

At first was quite pleased with thes shoes but the quality was quite disappointing. Within two weeks the laces were frayed apart where they thread through the eyelets. Then shortly after that the tread lugs started falling off and the stitching started separating along the sides. Was quite disappointed that my purchase didn't last longer.

These Gore Tex hiking shoes were very comfortable and the waterproof membrane performed well, initially. Unfortunately, the rigid rubber toe-cap is positioned at the flex point which causes the toe-cap to rub against the exterior membrane. Eventually, a hole will appear in the Gore Tex membrane and the shoe is no longer waterproof. Fortunately, TNF accepted my warranty return and I'm looking for a similar waterproof hiking shoe to replace this very comfortable pair I enjoyed until a few weeks ago.

Long time user of North Face Ultra 104's, 106's and 2 pair of 109's. My toe cap cut the fabric long before the soles were close to worn out. Unfortunately, I own two pair's of the 109's. First pair probably lasted 4 months before fabric cut rendering them useless to wear to work or anywhere someone would see me. The previous models had a leather piece running from the toe cap around shoe. My 104's and 106's lasted until sole was worn smooth. VERY DISAPPOINTING! This was my go to everyday gore-tex shoe. Please fix the design in the future. Going to try some Salomons for now.

I really loved these shoes. They were very comfortable right from the beginning and worked very well in wet conditions. However! They unfortunately didn't even last me a year before beginning to fall apart...
As near as I can tell the toe guard seems to cut into the mesh over time. See picture.

I like The North Face shoes and I still do, but I do not like how these were designed. I had the Headgehog GTX XCR III Hiking Shoes my entire year in Europe and they lasted. I bought the ULTRA 109 while I was home in USA to replace them as they are comfortable and look good. Now I'm in Europe again and discovering what is wrong with the ULTRA 109.
THE BIG PROBLEM
That beautiful toe cap is shaped like a blade and while bending the foot during normal walking, it cuts right into the material of the shoe. This leaves nice holes in your shoes. Mine didn't even start to look old before I noticed the holes, and had thought I had done it somehow. But unfortunately these shoes destroy themselves and it is unavoidable. Not too good a feature for water resistance either.
I would have bought a different shoe for my trip to Europe if I knew these would do this.

I’ve been wearing The North Face Ultra 109 GRX for 10 years or more. They are my daily shoe for around town and low intensity hiking. I wear them all seasons. I’m now doing more trail running and I’ve gone down a size to use them as my trail runners. Hopefully The North Face won’t drastically change the shoe in the future.

I've been looking for a GoreTex shoe like this for a while, IN MY SIZE! I couldn't be more happy with the product, it breathes well and keeps the rain, slush, and snow out. Very comfortable and durable for winter use in all sorts of situations.

I'm using these shoes for cross-training: free-weights in the driveway and 2-3 mile jogs mostly on the street. I like the traction and stability. Their water resistance is nice for keeping my feet dry when I cross wet grass or go through puddles -- much better than typical running shoes. I wear 10.5 in most shoes, and 10.5 with these fits well.

Very pleased with these shoes. They are very comfortable and there’s plenty of room in the toe box. Fit is true to size and wore them in rainstorm and my feet were dry

This is my third pair of these, I have a wide toe area, and these are amazingly comfortable. I didn't realize I was buying wides until I checked the 110 and this 109, since they are so similar looking. These 109 have better lace loops and the wide toe box, I'm so glad north face has carried these for so many years.
