I was going to be traveling for 5 weeks and needed a carry on bag (to be stored in the overhead compartment) that would meet the requirements of multiple airlines. The European airlines all had different measurement restrictions and all were smaller than a standard US carry on. This bag met the restrictions for all flights.
The backpack straps were a huge plus and made travel in the airports, on trains, and just walking down the street when I was carrying all of my stuff *so* much easier. I appreciate that the backpack straps can be cleanly stored away when you don't need them.
The pockets on the main flap make it easy to stow items that you'll need easy access to, and I like having the shoe compartment. I store the long strap in there. (I've actually never used the long strap.) Handles on multiple sides save you time and hassle.
It holds more than I thought - especially being "smaller" than a US carry on, I was little worried, but I can fit a lot in there and having the compression straps is a nice feature.
It was the bag I was most pleased with on my trip. (My rolling suitcase that I bought to check started deteriorating on day 1 - not from Timbuk2.) I was telling friends about how pleased I was with this bag left and right. I've continued to use it quite a bit since I've been back. It's my carry-on of choice for any trip where I'm also checking a bag - I'll never travel with two wheeled bags ever again, and it's great for weekend trips as well.
This bag is durable and looks great - I'm really so pleased with this purchase. $149 and worth every, single penny!

I originally bought this bag for an upcoming trip, but then I had to play a DJ gig with my laptop and DJ controller, and to my surprise the bag was essentially an exact fit. It's as if the bag was made for this thing. So while I may travel with it, it's primarily going to be my perfect DJ gear bag. I buckle the controller in, toss in my laptop, headphones, all my cabling and power adapters, and I'm good to go. And on top of all that it has plenty of room for more stuff, a couple of jackets, etc. And it's plenty big enough for travel as a wheelie bag replacement.

We took four of these on our family trip to Brazil - one each. Checked them in when we could, and brought them as carry on when we needed to make fast connections. Easy bags to pack, enough pockets, even one that expands to keep clean and dirty clothes separate. Just enough straps to be comfortable but not enough to get caught in the conveyor belts. Held up wonderfully well to abuse from the kids.

I'm going on a trip to Africa and we needed a strong sturdy bag that has room, lots of pockets, several handles, backpack option and no wheels
This is the only bag we found that fit that bill

This bag is getting me through a two month trip that ranges from capitol cities to the Siberian tundra - with this and a small roller bag, I have everything I need. The backpack option is great, and makes getting on and off airplanes, in and out of trains, and all the rest so much easier.

I have been Wingman devotee since purchasing my first pack a few years back. Time, travel and increasing popularity with my son for its use indicated to me it was time for a second Wingman. After sharing with me the disappointing news that the warehouse was sold out - Anthony R let me know that a new edition of the Wingman was due out in 2014 and I am now glad I waited. Like its predecessor, Wingman'14 is perfect for the travel-light business traveler who detests wheeled luggage and prefers to be fleet of foot through crowded airports. With the medium Wingman, there is still plenty of room for a well-kept pressed suit, crisp shirt and business shoes. Pluses over the prior generation Wingman includes more front pouches to organize travel musts and what seems to be better constructed backpack straps, especially for the one-arm slingers. Only downside I've noticed thus far is the loss of the top pouch - which out of habit I stored my travel liquids for quick access. For those of you with old Wingman nearing retirement, you won't be disappointed updating to the 2014. And for those who have never had the Wingman in your travel arsenal, it is well worth a try and buy.

Really holds a lot of stuff, and the pockets are well placed. I bought it for a carry on and didn't use it for THAT yet, but envision it working well! It is a very durable bag, I'm sure it will last a long time. The messenger bag strap/backpack straps are great for carrying your bag for longer periods.

I bought this pack to replace my old school pack that had seen better days. So far I have only used it to haul my books and computer around campus so I don't have anything to say about it's true durability although I dont think it would be an issue in more rugged conditions. It is a champ at holding everything you need while still keeping the profile of the pack slim, saving you from the Quasimodo pose that generally comes with a fully loaded pack. The waterproofness is nice as well. All my stuff stayed dry during through a long walk in torrential rain. And the whole thing just looks good.

I recently bought one of these for a trip to visit my parents in Michigan. It was summer so I didn't need a ton of bulky layers, but I was still able to pack 7 or 8 different outfits with room to spare. I liked the shoe pocket and the interior pocket, and I thought the handles on every side was useful. My only complaint is that the zippers were sticky around the corners.

In the last few years I've been somewhat disappointed in Timbuk2's soft-sided, carry-on bags. But this one restores my faith in the durability and quality of production at Timbuk2, proving that it is more than just a fashionable bag but a durable one. While I loved the bag, I must state that customer service about shipping could use some updating. I paid for next day shipping because I was leaving for a trip only a couple days away, but received no information about whether or not the order had shipped. It did and arrived in time to be used, but I was not provided any information on that front. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the product.

Recently started travelling (flying) a lot for work, day trips, overnighters, away for a couple of nights and found the transit thru airports to be troublesome at times pushing or pulling hand luggage. The wingman allows me to sling it as a backpack allowing me to free up both hands to check messages on my phone, sign paperwork at car hire counters and hotel counters, access public transport (trains) etc with greater ease....and not having to constantly manoeuvre my luggage thru and around crowds is an added bonus.

I have used this bag a lot as my primary suitcase- mostly for domestic travel but once to Europe. The thing that I liked most about it is that it has straps to convert it into a backpack but it really should have hip straps so it is more comfortable and practical to wear for long periods of time. That would make this bag perfect

I picked the Wingman specifically for travel and have taken it on three domestic (USA) flights so far. I easily carried a mix of clothes for 3-4 days, and never had a problem at the gate or fitting it into overhead bins or under the seat. Some might be turned off by the lack of structue but, like Gumby, it bends and flexes when needed but still keeps its shape well. Grab any of the carry handles and you know this bag is solid and going wherever you need it to. The Goldrush fabric is sharp; a subtle hex pattern with dark yellow accent stitching, it is understated but retains just the right amount of unique style. It seems just as durable as my collection of messengers.
However, there's one really notable flaw: a single layer of fabric covers the backpack straps on the exterior. I'm not excessively rough on my kit but I don't baby it either, and these are definite abrasion points when the bag is full and the weight is on this side. A thin piece of plastic sandwiched on the interior adds a small amount of rigidity to the bag, but also concentrates pressure on the straps and against that one sheet of cloth -- when bouncing against your leg, being dragged through security, or sliding on furniture or the floor. I'm hoping it won't be a problem long term, but vinyl or some foam on the interior of the pocket would have been an easy preventative fix. (Yeah, ok, I suppose I could put it on the other side, but still...)
Overall, a great bag and a great purchase.

I bought this bag because I was having a hard time fitting everything into my old bag. Carrying a laptop, gym clothes, and paperwork was more than my old bag could handle. The shoe pocket is perfect for sequestering my gym shoes, while the multiple zipper pockets give plenty of room to store papers, folders, and some office supplies. I use the inside zipper pocket to store my laptop. It isn't padded, but it works okay because I mostly only keep workout clothes, gloves, and a towel in the main compartment.
I like that the bag converts from a messenger bag to a backpack when needed. the bag also just really looks nice.
The only real cons I found with this bag is that the zippers feel a little sub-par when compared to other Timbuk2 products, and some of the surfaces on the outside are real dirt and dust magnets.
Overall this is a great bag if you need a flexible travel case or want to consolidate all your daily stuff into one large, but lightweight lugger.

Fantastic bag for a 2-3 day business trip. Plenty of room (almost too much for a 1-night carry-on), nice collection of pockets, and good protection for electronics. The shoe pouch actually fits my shoes (size 12) which can be a challenge with many bags. The closest anyone has come to a perfect travel bag for business from my perspective.
One minor comment on the size - because it is roomier than expected, it can almost be too big for carrying around during the day - making it a challenge to decide if bringing a separate briefcase or messenger bag is necessary for attending meetings, etc. This can also apply if you are thinking about using it for a daily commuter (combination gym / business bag). A slightly smaller version might be better for these use cases, but ymmv.
Overall a solid travel offering by Timbuk2, you won't be dissapointed.

This bag is a must have if you are looking for an all inclusive 1-2 night travel bag that you can carry on. I have been traveling with my custom TimBuk2 messenger bag and roller bag, however this was too much for a simple 1-2 night business trip.
The solution was a NO BRAINER.......welcome Wingman. This bag holds my laptop, chargers, notebook, pens and all the clothes that I need.
There are handles on all sides of the bag for easy removal out of the overhead bins. If you don't want to use it as a backpack the DURABLE straps are easily concealed.
How to make it better:
Add external waterbottle pocket
Zipper pull tabs on all zippers
Internal pocket for pens, keys, glasses and highlighters
Overall this bag is one Tuff traveling machine.

I really like the bag but the shoulder strap is a weak design. My messenger bag has a stronger/mannish shoulder strap that I will use in the future. Overall--cool bag that was well thought out!

I recently just used this on a 2-day trip to Vegas and ofcourse I packed too much! But this bag definitely handled it all! I think it can definitely carry enough stuff for a week-long trip maybe longer. the only thing I'd say is that I'm a fairly small girl 5'2, small frame, and when this bag is packed to capacity it's a little heavy and a little large, but otherwise this is a great buy and you should get it. I'll be testing it out on a 10-day international trip in the next month and have no doubt this will be the bag for me!

After a few trips with the Wingman it has become my go to bag for a business trip of a few nights when a suit is not required. The size is perfect for quick hit trips and I wouldn't wish it to be any larger as that would just give me an opportunity to load it heavier. As I do a lot of travel for work and I love that this bag fits in every overhead on even the smallest regional jets!
I'd love it if Timbuk2 would further separate their travel bags and have the aviator bag as a backpack and move the wingman move to a messenger style bag with a wide permanently attached strap like the classic messenger with the option of adding a cross strap. I never use the backpack straps and think they should be eliminated for simplicity and the spot the backpack straps stow would also be a good place to move the laptop sleeve and make the bag ride closer to my body for the occasional sprint for connecting flights. I've upgraded my Wingman with a "super" strap pad and recommend this accessory.
One of my favorite traveling features of my classic messenger that I wish would be brought to the Wingman is the sewn in clip. I often use it to put my car keys on when I'm traveling so they stay in my bag and I don't lose them while I'm driving a rental. I'd love it is that was put in the Napoleon pocket.
The Wingman is a great addition to my family's collection of co-pilots and messengers!

had a biz trip to Vegas (1.5 days in&out)and needed a new bag. Timbuk2 to the rescue. stowed 2 dress shirts, jacket and pants; plus toiletries, a pair of shoes, plus laptop and plugs all in one bag. fits perfectly under the seat on a plane too. the bag was also easy to manage in the crazy airport lines and checkin. what's it need?
1) A tether for keys as there's no place to easily secure them.
2) A better pocket for wallet or passport; with more exposure to easily grab what you need.
3) a name tag or biz card slot for easier identification.
4) a potential phone holder? a slide in pocket or something on the strap.
overall, a great bag for one or two days, including your laptop. it's a workhorse bag and perfect for a quick biz trip. I didnt have to pack another bag to carry work/laptop, etc.

This was the perfect carry on bag until the International Air Transport Association proposed a new standard of 55cm x 35cm x 20cm (22 x 14 x 8 inches). This bag's width will be a little more than what the new standard will require for a cabin-OK carry on.
