I had a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers. I prefer the look of the IR's but not by much. These are really nice. I'll compare the two since I bet many of you are looking to make the decision of which to get. First off, I am in between a 7.5 and 8 in Red Wings. 8's are a little too big, and 7.5's are a little tight. The IR's I have are 7.5's. I got an 8 in the Chippewa Homesteads. Fit: The IR's were really narrow, tight in the toe box. They did mold around my feet pretty well. The big issue for me was the toe cap was basically where my feet "folded" when I walked and they cut into my feet. The Chippewas toe cap is much smaller and just covers my toes. Not even close to the foot fold when I walk. They are also a bit wider than the IR's. (Win: Chippewa) Color/Look: I got the Crazy Horse and they aren't the nice deep brown that you see in the picture. Almost more of a greyish/brown. High Quality leather can have variations though. The IR's color is second to none. (Win: Red Wings) Soles: Neither have very good insoles at all. If you need the support/comfort, then I would get a half size larger than you would if you didn't use the insoles. I actually prefer not having insoles. The IR outsoles are TERRIBLE. 100% flat. I live in MPLS and the ice/snow is brutal with the RWs. The Chippewas have a nice Vibram outsole and actually have some tread to them. (Win: Chippewa) Price: Red Wing Iron Rangers are more than the Chippewas (Win: Chippewa) Overall, I'm going to sell my Red Wings. I love these Chippewas so far. My other RW's have lasted years, and this is my first pair of Chippewas. If these last as I expect they will, I'll no doubt be getting more in the future.

These are fantastic boots. Extremely well crafted, and long lasting. Quality is far beyond what I was expecting for an entry level priced boot.

Beautifully crafted boot. Photos don't do the leather justice. I came from the Red Wing Iron Ranger to this, and I prefer the look, fit, and finish of the Chippewa more. These boots look amazing dressed down with worn-in denim, or dressed up with slim chinos. Another benefit over the IR is the sole - the Rangers had a smooth sole, which is terrifying on ice or snow, making them useless. I suspect I'll be wearing this boot year-round. Can't say enough good things about it.

The Homestead Boot is my third pair of Chippewa Service Style boot. I wanted to try something a bit different (my other Service boots are the Black Odessa and the classic Cordovan boot). I wanted to have a boot with a cap toe design, and I am so pleased to say that these boots are not only fantastic and complement my other two pairs, but they already have received countless comments about how classy they look! A few comments about Chippewa's boots and then this boot in particular. Their Service style boot is made to last - great leather, a solid Goodyear Welt, perfect stitching and solid soles. The break in period is next to nothing and I have found that I can wear a new pair of boots all day long on the very first day. You can make these boots look like new in five minutes if you use quality shoe care product. The Homestead boot is a two-tone boot. The toe is almost a cordovan color, rich and consistent and makes the shoe pop. The remainder of the leather is a medium brown. The pair I received is almost identical to the picture. I find Chippewa boots (Service and Homestyle) run true to size. I also have RedWing Beckman's and Wolverine 1000 milers - I find those products (which are excellent) run at least half size large (the Wolverines may run a full size large). However, I am size 11½ and the Chippewa's are a true fit. You cannot go wrong with these boots. Buy a pair. Or three pair like I did. There is not a lot of arch support; but I always use a quality insert like Superfeet to provide support and comfort. You should take this into consideration when you decide on your size.

These have a very stiff footbed. They will take some time to break in. They are made from heavy duty leather. They are built in the true Chippewa tradition work boot with a bit more style.

This Homestead Boot is fantastic. I originally chose the Red Wing Iron Rangers due to their popularity and reputation, but I found the width to be terribly narrow--my foot is anything but wide. The IRs are offered in a 2E width, but I opted to have a shot at the Chippewas and I'm glad I did! These are exactly what I wanted: hand crafted, made in USA, classic, timeless, resole/heel-able. If this silhouette and description is what you are looking for in a boot you will be well served by these.

I have these boots in the Crazy Horse leather and the picture is pretty close to what they look like in terms of color. I would say that they can vary some; I saw three different pairs to try sizes and each was a little different, but that is to be expected. Sizing is larger than normal. I probably average a 9½, but sometimes a 9 or 10 and I am wearing an 8½ in these. I find them very comfortable. Maybe they will not work so great if you need lots of arch support or a soft cushioned insole. I was a bit worried at first since the non-removable insole is very hard. But after wearing them a bit, they seem to have totally conformed to my feet. This is good news since there is not enough volume for the very thin Superfeet insoles I tried. If need insoles, be sure to size up. After a short break in, I do not think that I need any. Last thing is I do not find them that warm. That is good for me in the desert. Overall these are great boots. They look awesome and I have had no problems so far.

Absolutely awesome. Favorite boots I own. They broke in in a day and a half. Comfortable, sturdy, and not too bulky at all. My only qualm was that the color doesn't really look like the photo online. It was a bit lighter and softer looking, but after a couple months of wearing in, parts of the leather are darkening and getting that shine. I actually like it more than what I thought they'd be like. I use them to ride my motorcycle. My toes feel safe and I love the look with my classic bike. I'd buy them again.

They look great and feel great! I've been wearing them almost every day for a month and I couldn't be happier. I haven't put an insert in yet but I might when I start wearing thinner socks. Gotten lots of comments on the sundance riptide color too.

I had trouble deciding between these boots and the Redwing Iron Rangers, ultimately deciding on these. The "American-made" tag was also a selling point. I highly recommend these shoes. They're durable, nice-looking, well-made, and extremely comfortable right out of the box. (Probably the most comfortable boots I've ever owned.)

These are awesome boots with a classic Americana look and superb quality. This is the second pair I've owned. The first lasted the better part of a decade. I have a "low-volume" foot and they fit me well. The Crazy Horse color is nice, but I returned these simply due to a color preference. My old ones were Crazy Horse which is sort of a dark brown/grey color. I wanted to try something in a tan brown.

Solid, stout boot. Leather is unyieldingly thick at first but breaks in nicely. The only disappointment, honestly, is the Vibram soles - both heels seem like they're already pulling loose. Will wait to see what happens with extended wear.

I have to review these boots. This is my second pair. My first pair, which is still serviceable after almost two years, is in black. I must tell you that the quality control from Chippewa is quite poor. The reason I say this is because the new pair, although exactly the same size, the brown ones fit as though my feet are swollen. There is a huge width gap in the lacing. I therefore will have to rate them overall as poor.

I was not impressed with this shoe by Chippewa for the price. Leather felt worse than the other Chippewa's I own at half the price. As far as style goes I went with the Red Wing Iron Rangers and am extremely happy in that decision.
