Great boots, Very handsome and comfortable. Not as much arch support as the Wolverine 1000 mile and honestly not crafted as well either, maybe a notch down from that Red Wing Beckman or Wolverine 1000 mile level but still extremely nice and also tough looking. Made in the USA but by who? I'm not knocking them but they could be better. The soles on mine have imperfections that my Wolverines and Red Wings don't and certainly wont have left the factory with. Also, I've heard of the heels falling off of a few pairs of these. They are also as stiff as my Red Wings were when they were band new so they will take serious breaking in, not like my Wolverines which were a dream out of the box. But the 1000 miles are horween leather so there is a big difference. These boots are also sold at J.Crew and LL Bean with the speed hooks. For all those who don't normally wear boots, they do not run big. Sneakers run small and everyone wears them so when they get boots they think that they run big but they are actually much more accurately sized from boot to boot than from sneaker to sneaker. Every boot I own is a 10.5 but sneakers/shoes are a completely diff story. I wear anywhere from 10-11.5 because they are not accurate from brand to brand as boots are. Remember boots have been made much longer than sneakers or running shoes. I cant give these 5 stars. I want to but there are boots out there that are on a whole other level. Also someone mentioned that you have to get your own insoles, that the these soles are plastic!? The soles are not plastic, they are leather and they are not made to put insoles in. You can, but they're not made for insoles. They are an old style boot made to replicate boots that were made before insoles were. I don't know if Chippewa carries a lifetime guarantee like Red Wing but they should.
I'd also recommend:

Great pair of boots! I bought the Chippewa Service boot in Cordovan. The color is perfect, not too dark, not too red. The laces are very quality and durable. They look great with some jeans. I'm sure these will last forever, they are triple stitched and the soles are heavy and extremely strong. I plan to wear them to work and school and everything. I have to take out the laces two eyelets to put them on (no big deal) *Warning* These boots run big! If you are used to wearing Nikes, Converse, Vans, athletic shoes, or aren't experienced with boots. I recommend going down a full size. I wear a 9 in Converse and Vans and Nike shoes. I bought an 8 in these boots and they fit flawlessly.

I have a number of boots - 3 pair of Chippewa Service Boots, 2 pair of RedWing Beckman, 1 pair of RedWing Iron Rangers, 1 pair of Frye Arkansas Mid Lace, 1 pair of Alden 405's (Indy Boots), and finally 2 pair of Wolverine 1000 Miler boots. OK, I'll admit it. I have a BIG problem. However, I want to provide a GLOWING review for the Chippewa Service Boot. Given that I have way too many boots, there must be a reason why I'm a collector!! (And avid wearer of finally crafted boots!). Pound for pound (great cliche) the Chippewa Service Boot is the most underrated yet expertly crafted, comfortable and multi-purpose boot of all of the above. I will just share my positive sentiments (there are no negative). First - fit and finish: nearly perfect (not as nice as the Aldens or Wolverines) but for almost every purpose, they are excellent. The finish takes a wide variety of creams, conditioners and polishes and you can make these boots look like they're new in 10 minutes. Hence, they are perfect with jeans to a Friday casual where you're wearing dress slacks and a nicely tailored blue blazer (I suggest Cordovan or Odessa Black). The stitching is even, durable and attractive. The Goodyear Welt is not quite as heavy as the RedWings, but is built for many (many) years of service (and can be easily resoled a number of times). Next - break in period: The Service Boot breaks in more quickly than all the aforementioned boots and rivals the Horveen Leather Wolverines for comfort. What I didn't expect was how comfortable they were immediately out of the box. I wore each pair a full day - on the first day!. Sizing fit is next: I wear a 12 in these boots and I believe an 11.5 would be fine as well. They fit so nicely that I can wear them with thin, medium or thick socks and the construction is such that they adjust with a just bit of lace tightening (yet maintaining their comfort). Your feet will not tire wearing these shoes!! And width - I'm a medium (C or a D) depending on the shoe - these are true to width. Finally - the sole - they have a sole that is certainly not for the more treacherous walks or for climbing the Matterhorn (a wee bit of humor) but for walk on dirt, gravel, cement, asphalt or moderate trails they're great. And comfortable indoors too! Now I love each one of my boots - I'm an avid fan of this style or footwear. And each boot would get an excellent rating. But.....I want to provide Chippewa "three hearty hoorah's" for having one of the very best boots on the market, at a price point lower than every single boot I listed above. Buy a pair - then you'll buy at least two more in other colors just because you want to wear this boot EVERY DAY.

These are great looking boots that don't seem to hold up to everyday wear. After two years of owning them, the lining on the inside by the toe is completely gone, and no amount of oil or treatments keep my feet from getting wet in the lightest rain. They're not the most comfy either, so buyer beware. For this money, it seems like you're better off with Red Wings (which is something I'll try next). My Timberlands I've had for 5 years are still water proof and more comfy without any kind of treatments or insoles.

After reading the reviews, I decided to go to Schott NYC and buy these boots so I could try them on. I collect boots and from reading the reviews figured that like Frye Boots they may run a little big. What I actually found is that these boots are almost true to size. I saw someone mention that they fit like the sizing of Chuck Taylors, but I disagree. They have almost the same fit as a Doc Marten. Since doc martens are so common, try on a pair and find your size and then buy that size in this boot. Another thing is that they do not come with insoles so once you buy some and put them in they will fit a little tighter. I bought 3/4 ones so I have free toe space. The boots are built to last and they're my favorite boots. I highly recommend them and as I said before, try on a pair of doc martens to know your true size.

They run a bit large and the collar was a little uncomfortable during the break in, but overall these are a great pair of boots. Happy with my purchase and will buy another pair in another color.

These run true to your running show size. Too many folks saying they run big. They are designed to add insoles which bring them to the correct size. I suppose if you plan to not have any cushioning then they may run a hair big with thick socks. They are awesome in every way. Built solid and look great. They are thick quality leather and take some breaking in. I have boney ankles and always have issues with boots rubbing. Not these! Should get a lot of years out if them. Zappos is THE best place to buy shoes bar none!

Overall a great boot and a terrific experience from Zappos! I got the service boot in Crazy Horse and it looks great. The boot in this particular color will definitely wear/mark, which gives it a nice patina once broken in. I wear a size 11 in every other type of shoe (dress, sneaker, hiking, etc.) so I ordered an 11 for this boot as well. It was clearly too big, felt floppy on my feet, so I went a half size down and the 10 1/2 are a perfect fit. I wear a mid-weight sock (Smartwool) with these boots too, not a thin dress sock. I have not put an insole in yet, and now that I've had them for a few weeks and they are broken in, I probably won't. They do take a little while to break in and felt stiff, almost clog like for the first few wears. I've had them for a month now and they are much better, very comfortable to wear all day. They look great and are a good quality boot. Highly recommend! The exchange with Zappos was flawless, and I will definitely order from this site again.

Excellent boots but the sizing is on the large side. I wear 8.5 shoe, ordered 8 in this boot, think I could have made that 7.5. With the right socks they are very comfortable. Great boots all around, sharp looking and not too much fussy styling. They get a lot of comments, and Zappos was very quick to get them to me.

I WANT to love Chippewa boots, but the quality is simply inconsistent. I've had to try and return multiple pairs over time. Never a consistent quality. I wear a size 13 sneaker, a 12 dress shoe. This time I ordered the Chippewa Service Boot (Crazy Horse) in size 12, but they were too big. I got an 11.5 which fit, BUT the right boot was very tight (not even walking, just on. and my right foot is slightly smaller than my left) and was putting pressure into the ball of my foot - the tongue/stitching appeared off-kilter to the left when compared to the left boot. Se the attached pic. Having to return them...again.

Amazing boots! I've had these for years and they're still going strong. Great quality and they've aged very well. I did put some thin foam insoles in as they're pretty flat and hard inside. Other than that they're perfect and I'm looking for many more years with them!

These boots fit great, I wear size 11 in skate shoes, 10.5 in most work boots, Carolina/ red wing Irish setters , I heard these ran big so I ordered, 10d and they do fit just right, I’m very pleased , the boots were brand new out of the box perfect condition.

Boots run about a half size large. I typically wear size 9 and 8.5 worked well. Out of the box they felt good and I could tell that with some leather softener, the break in period would be minimal. Arch support was decent compared to my 10 year old Dr Marten's.
All that being said, I am returning the Crazy Horse color as it is not the brown shown on this web site.
The left shoe is tan renegade, the right shoe is crazy horse.

Fit does appear to run a little large compared to most shoes and I followed the advice of a lot of reviews and ordered a half size smaller and they fit well. Will take a little time to break in but so far so good. I got the cordovan and be aware that it’s pretty red right out of the box, not as deep a color as say a penny loafer but I believe as it develops some character and wear it will look fantastic. Still that’s why I took off one star on style. Fit and finish were very good, no noticeable issues or any kind. Can’t wait to get them fully broken in.

I am a size 9 and occasionally a 9.5, but am wearing an 8.5 in these boots with an insole and a moderately thick (think casual athletic) sock. Break in period is a few days--still going through it, but the boots are more comfortable by the day.
Overall: loving them and think I'll have them for a long long while.

Looks great, solidly built. I’ve only had them for a week but they are already breaking in well. When people say they run big they mean it. I generally wear a size 12.5-13 but in these boots a size 12 is still a bit loose. Looking forward to looking my term ownership of these.

These boots look far better in person than in the pictures online. They seem to be very well made and are more comfortable right out of the box than other boots.
Important note: the size on these seems to run way off. I wear a size 11 in most athletic type shoes, 10.5 in most dress shoes and the smallest I ever wear in anything has been a 10. I order a 10, sized down to 9.5 and those will work but are certainly not tight by any stretch.

I am returning these and ordering a new pair. This is my second pair of these boots, and really like them, but the left boot on this last order is much narrower than the right. I wore them in hopes that that would break in, but they haven't, and I am worried that when I wear thicker socks in the cooler weather, they'll be too tight.

Beautiful leather on the Tan Renegade. Less red than that shown in the Zappos photos. Tough at first but breaking in very nicely. Ordered a size 10 and fit is perfect, normally wear a 10.5 in Nike/Adidas/etc. Looking forward to many years of use in these fine, American-made boots.

Since the reviews regarding sizing seem to be all over the place, I ordered a 9.5D, 10D, and 10.5D. My foot measures out to a 10.5D on a Brannock device.
The 9.5D was too tight when wearing socks other than thin dress socks. Even with the thin dress socks, I felt that the ball of my foot didn't line up properly with the boot.
The 10.5D was too big. My foot move around too much when wearing heavyweight wool socks. Again, the ball of my foot didn't line up properly.
The 10D fits perfectly! Feels comfortable with heavyweight wool socks, and not too loose with thin dress socks.
I think it's safe to order half a size down from your Brannock measurement.
The break-in period wasn't too bad. It took about a week of wearing it around the apartment for a few hours a day.
Also, I got the boot in Tan Renegade and it looks great. I've gotten a bunch of complements, even from complete strangers at the grocery store.

Straightforward in design, functional, extremely well built, and contrary to other reviews, right on size. I normally wear an 8.5 but ordered the 8 based on reviews that these run large. They don't. Exchanged the 8 for an 8.5 and got a comfortable, secure, but not binding or lose fit.
