I got these socks for my husband so he would have one really warm pair for when we are outside like idiots at our kids soccer games! I had read good things about this brand, and settled finally on this pair. He is extremely hard to please and he has been raving about them. Would recommend!

I have used these socks winter mountaineering in the coldest, harshest conditions. I have used them on extended hunts and expeditions. These are the socks that have kept my feet the driest and the warmest over the past decade. Hands down the best for cold weather activities.

Smartwool has been my favorite sock brand for warmth and comfort for years now but these particular socks are so cushy and soft that they feel great just to put them on. So much so that I also wear them like slippers. I am a female size 6½ shoe and the small fits me. Although I am extremely wool sensitive, I have zero sensitivity to these whatsoever - they are not itchy at all. When you live in a cold climate you cannot put a price on warm feet. This will be your favorite pair of socks.

These socks are soft, warm, and tall. I wear them in the spring and fall when I am horse back riding. I pull the socks over my silk long under ware so they do not ride up my leg. The socks keep my feet warm all day. My son and daughter in law work outside all day. I have bought these socks for them also. They love them too!

These are the comfiest and thickest socks I've ever owned. I've hiked the hills in sunshine, hail, rain and snow and they never disappoint. Love them.

I bought my guy 3 pairs of these over a year ago for use in his work boots. He not only wore them all winter, but all summer too. Besides the fact that he loves the way they feel, even though these 3 pairs have been in heavy rotation for a year, they show very little wear.

I need super loose socks, with the maximum cushion I can find, due to fibromyalgia pain, arthritic feet, super cold feet, etc. I tried wearing the socks pushed down and even folded over, but the elastic hurt the skin of my ankles and my ankles. So I cut a straight line down the front of the sock, basically the front of my shin bone area, and folded the flaps down. I get a relaxed fit and double layer of folded over material on my ankle. My Tonkinese cats LOVE wool and often tear holes in them. But I still wear my socks even with holes. My toes have nails set back, so I never never have had hoes in the toes. I have learned not to dry them totally in the dryer, as it makes them not as soft and fluffy.

Nice Heavy materials and made well, top is tighten than expected and tight on my large male calfs.Would be a perfect rating if tops were larger diameters and a darker wool colors like black. navy blue..

I had those long time before, though the fabric is the same, but not well designed and durable as before, where it was thick, dense, shape conserve. This one is soft, fuzzy, and lint by short time wearing, also, the toes seam is not well shaped as before, so, I would love to give it five stars, but four is what I see it.

I bought these as additional pairs for spring trip to Denali. My other pair are several years old and still holding their loft and show very little ware.

Great socks . . . had a pair of these I used for skiing that lasted over 20 years! Don't bunch up or slide around your toes and feet in your ski/snowboard boots.

My go-to socks at home in winter. Too thick usually to fit into shoes, but cozy for keeping warm at home. Crazy price for socks, but worth it.

Have been wearing variants of the mountaineering heavy and extra heavy socks for many years. The socks are extremly comfortable and well cushioned and are good at wicking moisture (within reason) and maintaining warmth and comfort throughout a long hike. My only real issue is that they tend to wear quite rapidly at the typical friction points in my boots, particularly at the sides of the balls of my feet and my first and fifth toes. I tend to go through multiple pairs per year and it can get expensive.

These socks are so warm and cozy! The only thing I didn't like was they roll down a little bit at the calf. I bought two pair and went to a smaller size and that did the trick!

They are a nice, soft, roomy sock. I chose the grey/blue pair and they were not as extra heavy as the red/grey pairs I bought a couple of autumns ago. I am quite pleased with them.

I got these socks for ice climbing. They are great for keeping your feet warm. They only problem that I had was after one use the sock would stretch out quit a bit. I would then have to wash and dry them to "shrink" them back down to their original size, or else I risk uncomfortable stretched out socks in my boots (which isn't the worst thing). I am very open to the idea that I bought to large of a size and that is why they start to bunch down in my shoes after one use. They are thick, keep that in mind if you wear your boots small.

Bought these socks as I love merino and love Smartwool socks. I have a few light and medium weight smartwool socks and I rate them highly. These socks are very thick, very warm and are very cushioned meaning that walking is comfortable. I use them with a part of insulated snow boots. My only critique would be the size. I bought these to wear as a single layer sock in my boots, I usually wear a size L Smartwool sock as my shoe size is right in the middle of the range (im a 43.5 - 44 Euro size). These socks run much larger and when I wear them alone, the heal tends to ride up the back of my foot. They do work well when I use a medium weight liner sock underneath them. If you don't want to run a liner sock, I suggest you size down. If you do use a liner sock then order in your normal size. The overall quality is very high.

The old mountaineering sock had an over the calf design and an elastic strip to hold them in place, then the strip was removed but the sock was still over the calf.. now they have shrunk that down. Same price but a lot less sock... I pay for quality, make a good product and charge what it is worth. What i see happening is shrinkfllation, material is going down while price is going up. I hope they start a model back up that is over the calf and extra heavy...

These have been my go to socks for alpine mountaineering for several years. They are warm and comfortable. One big "but": they wear through at the big toes very quickly. I do cut my toenails but it seems to have little effect. Rather than throw away good socks I have learned to darn, but I would rather Smartwool maybe added some more durable fibre at the toes. Maybe others have softer toenails, so I'll put a "recommend" on these, despite the problem

My favorite socks for wearing around the house, sleeping in or use with muck boots. BUT I only got this pair as it was a gift because the darn things (as seems true of all Smartwool socks, and we’ve had many pairs in different models) wear out quickly and develop holes on the bottoms. My DT socks don’t wear out but are not nearly as comfortable.

Very nice THICK socks, but the elastic is way TOO TIGHT. (I don't have fat or puffy ankles, but these left a deep painful dent in my skin.) I tried to snip out the elastic, but it was impossible without unraveling the top.
