I am a boot person. I currently own 7 pairs of boots that total over 1300 dollars retail. I typically put my shoes through a lot of abuse and need to buy good quality ones just to make them last. That is why when I needed a pair of black shoes to wear at my new job I went straight for chippewa. I own a pair of ll bean katahdin iron works made by chippewa and they have been my favorite boots I've ever owned. I was hoping these boots would be as good but unfortunately they are not. The boot isn't built on the Munson Last like the katahdins so it runs narrower than the katahdins and the transition from the heel to the ball is a bit steeper than the katahdins as well meaning my orthotics don't quite settle in these ones too good. That being said, I imagine if you didn't have boats for feet like I do and don't have flat feet that require insoles then these would be great. The quality is great; the leather is tough and well finished and the stitching is quality too. The particular boots are fully welted which is superior to the katahdins which only are welted to the heel area and have that part of the upper glued to the outsole. All in all I do like these boots and I would recommend them or any chippewa boot to someone looking for durable and good looking footwear and its made in America as well. I have gotten compliments on how nice the boots look which says a lot for a pair of boots designed for work.

Iam always assisted in my choice of boots by the reviews of others; therefore, I want to follow in other's "boot-steps" and offer a review.
I wear size 81/2 EE in Timberland, Frye, and Rockport, and size 9 in New Balance. I ordered an 8 EE in these Chippewa Black Odessa Boots and they fit perfectly --- with a Spenco orthotic and moderately thick socks. The boots are well-made, give excellent support, and are comfortable for walking, hiking, and working. They are so beautiful that I wear them for dress, too. I've worn Timberland, Rockport, New Balance/Dunham, Frye and Red Wing Boots in styles very similar to the Chippewa 6" Black Odessa Plain Toe Lace Up Boot. By far and away these are the best of them all. I will probably never again buy another pair of any brand but Chippewa. And I just love that they are made in the U.S.A. Of course, I can't say enough good things about Zappos --easy to order online, timely delivery and boot packaging is always in good shape when I receive my order. Customer service is excellent. Oh yes! Not to be overlooked, by any means, is Zappos return policy. No hassle and very timely credits back to one's account. I am one happy customer. Picture Charles Schultz's "Snoopy" at supper-time. (Because sizes of boots vary so much with different brands, I am checking "true to size" and "true to width" on this boot --- but remember I ordinarily wear an 81/2 to 9 EE, and wear an 8 EE in this particular boot.
I'd also recommend:
I would not recomment any other brand

I'm the type of anal retentive person that researches the hell out of something before I buy it. These boots were no exception. I was hemming and hawing about whether or not I wanted to bite the bullet and spend nearly double on some Red Wings. So glad I went with the Chippewa boot. They're well made, comfortable, look good. These were my first non Doc Marten boots and after the break-in period they're my new favorite boot. I'm an 11 and bought a 10, money. Thank you for your time. Buy more shoes.

Great boots. I'd had another pair of Chippewa brown "engineer" boots from several years ago (still using them), and I expected comfort, sturdiness and traditional construction. These met my expectations, but were more flexible from the start and needed no breaking in to be comfortable. Usually wear size 11 in other makes; I ordered 10 and 1/2, which fit with enough room for thicker socks when needed. I got these also for motorcycle use, and when I ride to work they have a classic style for "office casual."

I should have taken heed of the previous posts. I wear an 8, and needed a 7.5. They have a great fit and look awesome. After going over over the craftsmanship, the stitching is great, but I have serious doubts about the heel remaining adhered after any period of time. I took my thumb and put a little bit of pressure to the heel and the edges of the heel lifted up. I didn't want to push it to the limit, but I'm disappointed that I was able to do this. I'm worried it will come off if I get it snagged.

These boots are fantastic! I've owned Red Wing work boots as well as Frye's, the Chippewa's exceed these in quality and comfort on both accounts. I read a review expressing concern about the comfort and break in time. I had about 4 days of break in on these boots, and this was only from the upper rubbing against my leg, this went away quickly and they fit like a glove already. I would, and have recommended these boots to friends already. As stated in other reviews, they seem to run 1/2 size larger than your normal shoe size. The first shipment had the wrong color of boot in the box, this was due to a manufacturer package mix up. I called at 4:30pm and explained what had happened, the girl that took care of me had the correct pair of boots on my front porch in Austin TX at 10:00am the next morning! I'm still scratching my head on how she made this happen. There is a reason why Zappos is the industry standard for customer service.

Sturdy, firm boot. Ordered a half size down. If you wear insoles or want to wear with thick socks, you may want to go an entire size down.

You cannot go wrong with a Chippewa! This pair of shoes fits like a glove. Nice, tight, and very comfortable. Chippewa boots have always felt great on the feet.
Always make sure to get half a size smaller because my regular shoe size is 9.5, but with a Chippewa, I always order 9, which fits perfectly.

You can't go wrong with a pair of these boots. I'd previously ordered and returned the Red Wing Heritage Beckman boot, which is a similar style, and went with the Odessa instead, for several reasons. The price is almost half of what you're spending on RW shoes, and I truly feel the quality and craftsmanship with these Chippewa boots is streets ahead. They also have a thicker sole, and that's what I'm looking for, if I'm dropping so much money on leather boots.

It is with great disappointment that I box these up and send them back. I wanted some black Chipps for work. these look and feel great, but I have no faith in the structural integrity of the heel. The way the soles are constructed, I can ever-so-slightly peel the front part of the heel away from the sole. With full strength and determination I feel that I could rip the heel off the boot with my bare hands. I don't see why they don't make some black GQs with the Stockbridge sole. Bummed.
