This is an awesome new product from Birkenstock and it comes complete with what may amount to design flaws. I am a long time fan of Birkenstock and am not one to complain but the Dundee does come with issues. First, the overall design of the Dundee is traditional Birkenstock including the anatomically correct cork/latex footbed , the wide toe box and high quality, good looking style. The problem (and depending on your tolerance levels may be a minor one) is where the front quarter of the shoe meets the rear quarter on the outside of the foot. There is a small piece of suede leather on the interior of the shoe which is part of the front quarter which folds "in" (towards the front) as you insert the foot. There is little or no way to correct this problem once the shoe is on and it results in a nagging discomfort. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the shoe itself seems to be extremely narrow in and around the lace section . I am sure with wear the shoe will stretch/widen but I don't see the "fold" problem going away. Other than that I really like the "Desert Boot" look of this new design and am struggling with a return decision.

I am The Princess and The Pea when it comes to footwear, which is one of the reasons I choose Birkenstock: in general their shoes are kind to sensitive feet. But the design flaw that others mention in their reviews of the Dundee -- overlapping suede below the rivet, where the front and back of the shoe meet -- was a deal breaker for me. The suede would catch on the side of my foot and fold forward inside the boot, and the extra material caused discomfort that increased over time. Overall, the Dundee is an attractive boot that was completely unworkable for my sensitive feet.

I purchased a narrow width, instead of a regular width. Some people (in the review) complained about a leather flap that was uncomfortable. It's an EASY fix and it isn't due to poor design. You'll reach to the seam of the leather and adjust it accordingly. It's that simple! The made and the quality is tremendous! It's actually two pieces of suede leather, which explains the flap that you'll experience. But, it's no biggie! It's a Birkenstock. It's worth the money and comfort of your feet!

They're great shoes. Really stylish for Birks and still Birk comfy. I have several pairs of sandals all in size 38 and a pair of the London clogs in 39. I ordered these in 39 assuming that they'd fit the same as the London's (with socks on) But they were too big. I ended up exchanging for 38's and now they're great. When you first get them out of the box and put them on they are awkward- You have to loosen the laces way more than you'd think in order to get them on. This is not a big deal once you get used to it. The flap that some folks talk about- It only flips the wrong way on mine if I'm trying to squeeze my feet in without the laces loose enough. And like others have said, you can flip it back the right way easy enough. If you don't double knot the laces, they will come untied, but also not a big deal.

I just purchased my second pair of The Birkenstock's Dundee... The first pair that I got, I purchased around a year & 1/2 ago & they have been the best shoes that I have ever worn or owned... I must say that this is the best Birkenstock Yet To Be Made... Another Reviewer Here Says That There is a "Design Flaw..." While you can notice what the reviewer is saying, i.e a tightness that is somewhat uncomfortable when you put the shoes on, this quickly diminishes once the shoes begin to mold to your specific foot contours & is worn in, & can easily be avoided if you put your shoes on loosely before tying them... All In All, you cannot beat the Awesome Comfort & Look of These Shoes... I would rate them 5 out of 5 possible stars...

I love you more than my dog! In the search for the most comfortable pair of casual shoes in the world, I found everything I was looking for. Zappos.com service is second to none. In a day and age when customer service is nearly dead, Zappos sets a new standard. Further, Birkenstock created a well made comfortable pair of shoes that I wear as often as possible.

Do not bother. This is a great looking shoe on the outside but inside, it is very poorly designed. I couldn't even slip it on my foot because the hardware and folds under the laces were in the way.

These shoes make standing for 12+ hours a day tolerable instead of the excruciating pain with any other shoes. Unfortunately I can no longer wear any other pair of shoes.

I love these. My wide flat feet with troubled toes love them too. Yes, I know what some reviewed mean by the pesky flap but it is an easy adjustment. The taupe leather is very attractive, an excellent quality. I ordered the same size as my other Birks and am breaking them gradually. I look forward to more cold weather just took wear them!

I love these shoes. I can wear them all day and my feet do not hurt at all. I read the previous reviews and they worried me but I have had no problem with them at all. I just wish I could afford to get them in both colors. And my granddaughters think they are stylish.

These are a little bit hard to get used to as the sole grabs the bottom of my feet. But now they are extremely comfortable! These shoes are also extremely light adding to their comfort.

I have owned several pairs of Birks of different styles over many years. Despite the long-winded ramblings of other reviewers, these feel great. No issues with "tolerance levels" or front quarter meets rear quarter insanity.

Really comfortable, of course. The only footbed that controls my plantar fasciitis in an ankle-high shoe that works in the winter. It looks nice, too.

I bought these shoes a few months ago, and I knew right away that I was going to love them. However, I wanted to wait a while before writing a review, to break them in a bit and see how they held up through different activities and a change of season. The verdict is fantastic. I spend a ton of time on my feet: I wait tables for a living, and I don't own a car so I walk for most of my daily errands; I also walk and hike a lot for fun. These shoes are some of the best all-purpose shoes I've owned. I work in them, I walk around town in them, even do some light hiking in them. The footbed takes a break-in period, as they are birkenstocks and have to mold a bit to one's own foot shape, but once that happens they feel amazing. They are probably not the right thing for people who want crazy amounts of arch support and/or cushioning, but I love the way the footbed encourages me to actually use the muscles in my feet properly and distribute my weight through my feet in a yoga-like way. They are very durable so far. Not waterproof but can withstand a drizzle and if they do get wet they dry out quickly and aren't ruined at all. The roomy fit allows for a variety of sock-thicknesses, so with some heavy socks they can be worn on a very cold winter day. The only issue I've had with them as far as weather is that they don't have much grip on the sole, so on ice they are pretty slippery, but hey--you can't expect one shoe to do literally everything! The slipperiness is not an issue at work, where I have to walk through a kitchen that might have water or grease or whatever on the floor, it's just an issue with ice or packed snow. As far as the issue some people have raised with the place where the leather sort of folds in against your foot: I immediately noticed what they were talking about, and immediately reached my finger in and fixed it. Simple. It doesn't happen every time I put them on, but when it does it takes me literally 3 seconds to reach in and fix it. No big deal as far as I'm concerned. I think that the people who complained that they couldn't reach in to fix it must have been wearing a size that was way too small for them. This shoe is not meant to be tight on your foot. I actually went to great lengths to make sure I got the correct size... looked up Birkenstock's sizing chart, pulled out a measuring tape and measured my foot. I'd recommend doing this if you're considering buying a pair of these. They felt surprisingly big at first, but again after a break-in period I can tell that they are the perfect size for me. So, if you're and active-on-your-feet person who wants a sturdy shoe that will keep your feet happy and healthy, I'd recommend these! And a word to other servers--I know most servers swear by Danskos. I think Danskos are great shoes, they're just not for everyone (just as these dundees aren't for everyone either). I had a lot of problems with them, so I'd especially recommend giving these a try if you've been burned by Danskos and are looking for an alternative.

I bought the Dundee Birkenstock boot in November and I have worn them every day since then. I have arthritis in my feet and toes, and they are difficult to get on, however, once my foot makes it in they are really comfortable to walk in. I have to struggle to poke the flap down (design flaw), but it's worth doing because they are so comfortable and they look good, even with the wide and fabulous toe box. I walk my dog on a beach of uneven surfaces, but these shoes are so stable, I feel very balanced. I'm finally used to getting them on and off. I really had to work at it but it was well worth it. I bought it in my regular size and it's a perfect fit.

Heads up. If you order Birkenstocks in narrow when available...they look like normal shoes and not cartoony like Birkenstocks usually look. And they still are as comfortable as Birk's always are. I get tons of compliments on these shoes.

After looking again and again at these online, I splurged and bought a pair at my local Birk place (sorry Zappos! Still love you!) to help with the tendinitis I've been battling in my left foot. I'm a woman and have a pair of Gizehs in a 42, and was thinking of getting 43s because of the notion that these closed-toe Birks might be smaller--they were NOT. There was plenty of room in the 42s I tried on, so if you have Birks already and are trying to eyeball it online, I strongly recommend going with the size that you already wear. (Everyone is different--but for me the 43s just wouldn't have been a proper fit.) If you are new to Birks, I recommend trying them on in person. Similarly, I tried on a pair of Maines in the store, but actually passed because the low-cut style made my heels feel like they were slipping out when I walked (it's quite possible this would go away with breaking in). The Dundees lace up closer to your ankle, so for me they felt snug and secure and were a slam dunk. They are wide and look a little like duck feet, but they are wicked comfortable, and give great support for bad feet the way most Birkenstocks do. Also, these were a real struggle to put on at first (the effort took a few frustrating minutes), but after wearing just once or twice, the shoe begins to break in and you can get it much more easily on and off. Also--another reviewer here wrote how the fabric on the side of the shoe sometimes hurt her foot--I know exactly what she's talking about, and it's INSTANTLY FIXABLE. If it's rubbing it just means the fabric caught on itself while you were putting it on, all you have to do is slide your finger in along the outside seam (from inside the shoe) while you have it on, and it'll fix instantly, i.e. this is not something fundamentally wrong with the product design. While my tendinitis will take some time to get better, wearing shoes with such good support is already helping a lot. They are an excellent addition to the wardrobe, and would definitely recommend. Hope this helps!

Awesome boot, once they break on in they feel just as good as the sandal. I walk five miles every day after standing all day at work, so Birkenstocks have improved my life to an incredible degree.
With regard to the Dundee boot I love the ankle support they provide, and the only problem I saw was at first I had trouble with the rivets on the front pressing in to the top of my foot. However when I realized that it was just the way the leather had folded over inside I was able to reorient the leather with my finger inside the boot while the boot was on and loosened. You have to be aware of the way you put them on, if you are carefull the leather will not fold the wrong way, and then over time you don't have to be as careful as the leather becomes trained to fall flat.

I recently purchased this product from the excellent reviews that I have read and heard from friends about Birkenstock products. I have read that the Dundee has an issue with a piece of leather that causes discomfort on the interior of the shoe but either Birkenstock has addressed this issue with newer models or I just got lucky because my shoes do not have any issues that I can see or feel. I'm still breaking mine in but I can already feel the amazing support that the footbed provides.

Takes a few days to get used to walking in the Birkenstock footbed, but once you do it is quite nice and provides amazing support. I work on my feet all day, and these are stylish enough that I can wear them outside of work too and not compromise on my foot comfort.

These shoes are exactly what I wanted! Like any Birkenstock, it took me wearing them a couple of times to get used to the insole shaped out like my feet. They are really comfy and if you've worn Birkenstocks before you know what I'm talking about. Nice foot support.

Love the Dundee--have it in the taupe and just got the Mocha. These are very generously sized shoes, great for those of us with wide feet, but some may have to order down a size to get the narrow width. So nice to have the Birk support and comfort in a stylish and useful/versatile shoe ...!

Wow, these are amazing shoes if you're a Birk fan (or willing to be converted!) I was hesitant to try these as they aren't cheap, and I while I love my classic Birk Arizona sandals, the closed toe Birk Boston clog never felt right for me with a funky fit I didn't care for...but these Birk desert boots were incredible right out of the box. Like they were made for my feet! And they don't even have Birk's Soft Footbed I am so crazy about -- Dundee features the harder classic footbed. Plus these shoes look great--the classic desert bot/chukka boot look is time tested and very masculine-sexy. And it's hard to guess they Birkenstocks. For Birk, these are first rate stylish! I adore these so much I am ordering them in black as well!

The only problems I have with these shoes is the sole wore out very fast on the heel and laces. I had them resoled and they are once again back to working for me... As far as the overlapping fabric where the front and the back meet...COME ON! You can't even feel it on the inside, even in bare feet. These are great casual boots that allow for me to work in without the discomfort of having to wear dress shoes. Keep innovating Birkenstock and I love the Fall 2013 colors.
