I have owned several grind and brew makers including Cuisinart and Melitta. The Breville is by far the best one of the bunch. It is solidly built, easy to use, and most importantly, makes an outstanding cup of coffee. For those people who say that the grinder is too loud, I have to disagree. It is far quieter than the Melitta (which, by the way, uses an inferior blade grinder). My wife bought this for me for Christmas and quite frankly, I was a little upset that she spent this kind of money on it. But, I decided to at least try it and figured that if I didn't like it, I would just take it back. But, after playing with the strength settings (I like my coffee strong), I was pleasantly surprised to see that this maker does the job quite well. In fact, even at the lower settings, the coffee is plenty strong, especially if using a darker roast. Also, I used a thermometer to check the output temp of the coffee and found it to be within the perfect temp range of 200-205 degrees coming out. I had never owned a thermal carafe before and was skeptical because I like to make a full pot and drink it throughout the morning/day. Preheating the carafe is recommended and not a big deal for me. Just put some hot tap water in the carafe for 30 seconds to a minute or so before you use it and then dump it out. If you are setting the programmer to make coffee in the morning while you sleep, of course you can't do this...but for me, I enjoy my coffee hot and have no problem just doing it when I get up in the morning myself. Again, not a big deal for me. By preheating, my coffee stays plenty hot for 6-8 hours easily. Still warm (not hot) even after 10 hours. Clean up is easy (much easier than the other brands) and I use paper filters (brown) instead of the included gold filter to make clean up even easier. The bottom line is that I absolutely love this coffee maker and it is absolutely the best one I've ever owned.

I read a lot of reviews on other websites and agree with many of them. This machine is big, but it does so much though. I have used a Keurig machine for quite a few years. Love the convenience, but the k-cups are expensive and not a lot to choose from. Tried the k-cup filters and the coffee was just weak. Decided I needed a "real" coffee maker. This is the real deal. Love the ability to use either the carafe or single cup and I can choose the size of the single cup. best thing I love about this machine...it makes a really good cup of coffee!

First, let me say that I typically love Breville products. We own about 10 including the Panini maker, juicer, blender, electric wok, k cup coffee maker, oven, etc. Normally the style and function are both phenomenal. As much as I wanted to like this coffee maker, I cannot in good conscience give it a favorable review. The main problem is that it is unreliable, but there are other problems as well. First, let me say that we love our coffee and have admittedly been considered to be coffee snobs. We have owned several Cuisinart grind and brews and have found that the grinder breaks quickly, and prior to this Breville owned a Capresso Coffee Team (which we are now again using). Having been a big fan of Breville products, we were excited to buy and try this. The problems are numerous. Although we do not use oily beans, the first unit's grinder broke after 2 months of using it 2-3 times/day. Fortunately, Breville's customer service is excellent and it was replaced quickly. However, we are noting that the grinder is again "sluggish" and furthermore, the unit stopped working completely one day, necessitating a software reboot (leaving it unplugged overnight) after which it began working again. Another problem is that there is no way to brew coffee that has already been ground. There are times when a guest might want decaf and we either have to empty out the bean hopper and use decaffeinated beans, or use a different coffee maker altogether. The unit is relatively easy to clean (although it is not as easy to clean as the Capresso) and looks nice, but overall it has been a great disappointment.
I'd also recommend:

Breville does it again. Works great...no complaints. This unit is oversized which is awesome in a large kitchen. I love the scale it brings to my counter. Weird way to fill with water, I tend to drop a little on the display. Not really an issue. I love this machine first for its looks, also for its functionality, and good cup of coffee...did I mention it looks great?!

We purchased our Breville 600XL about a month ago,and all our comments are very favorable. (This machine replaced a Cuisinart coffee grinder and maker.) The Breville looks great on our counter top. The grinding noise is reasonably loud, but not as bad as the Cuisinart. It is easy to operate. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, with virtually no learning curve. Most importantly, it consistently makes flavorful, hot coffee. The boldness of the coffee is easily adjusted, and the read-outs on the machine are user friendly. This product is a huge improvement over the Cuisinart. We give it five stars in every category!

This is an excellent coffeemaker. It is well made and flexible enough to make coffee servings of all sizes from a small cup to 12 cups. The quality of coffee is very good and cleaning is relatively easy. I would certainly recommend the Breville.

We love the Breville BDC600 XL coffee maker! It is easy to clean, keeps coffee warm for several hours, and is overall the best coffee maker we have ever had. We have used an automatic grind and brew machines for many years. We love the idea of going from whole beans to aromatic and tasty coffee in a few minutes, without the need to grind each batch. The Cuisanart -- both first and second generation -- were okay, but we had trouble keeping the grinder mechanism clean and steam-free and both had problems with messy pouring. We bought the Capresso Team last year, and while it makes fine coffee, the pot does not hold heat for long at all, so after the first half hour, each cup has to make a trip to the microwave to make it warm enough to enjoy. Before enjoying the first pot from new coffee maker, we followed manufacturer's instructions to run several cycles of plain water -- without beans -- to eliminate "newness" taste that can occur in a new unit.

Great tasting coffee. Simple to use. Very clean. I was skeptical that this would produce better coffee than the up-market coffee maker we were replacing, but it does everything it claims. This is the best-tasting coffee I've ever had from a home machine.

After having owned cuisinart coffee makers for years we got tired of the pot leaking or not pouring right so we switched to the Breville. Love that it pours beautifully without spillage, coffee stays hotter longer and its attractive to keep out on counter. Worth every penny!

We were looking for a unit with a burr grinder but had found that most of them make a horrible cup of coffee. This unit is fantastic and brews coffee that is as good if not better than one you would buy at Caribou/Starbucks. It is a little big, but you'll get over that as soon as you've tasted the coffee. Easy to use. You can choose how strong the cup, single cup brew, the size of the single cup - up to 16 oz! or entire pot that stays hot for over three hours. We are nothing short of in awe of this Breville!

Great coffee, simple operation, easy clean. Options for strength and size are a bonus. Carafe helps keep coffee hot and built in grinder. All in all an awesome machine.

This BCD600XL machine is not that great folks. It looks good, brews good coffee, but the grinder is not reliable. 1st machine, grinder died after 10 months. 2nd machine, after 2 weeks. Are you kidding me?. We are heavy coffee drinkers, maybe, and to us, investing that money in a coffee maker should have solved our problem, but it's not the case. That coffee maker is not up to the task. At $350.00 a piece, you are expecting something more robust, and reliable. Conclusion, it's not better than Keurig, Tassimo, or Cuisine Art. Disappointment.

Three weeks after being given this product, it just stopped working. While I loved it when it worked, it is too expense a machine to just stop working. I have cleaned the machine and followed all of the trouble shooting recommendations. No luck. This is very frustrating. My Mr. Coffee has been with me for years. Not fancy and not as good a cup of coffee, but dependable.

Do not be fooled by the brand name and the promise of having a better coffee maker because it costs more. This is no better, in fact worse than a cheap Mr. Coffee because mine is dead after 7 months! Keep looking and shame on Breville for continuing to produce this without fixing the problems!

We have made two carafes of coffee with this machine. So far it is terrible. The coffee is weak and sour tasting, with no complexity at all. This is with the intensity set on bold and using the same beans we have been using for years in our former grinder/maker, a Capresso. It doesn't seem to be possible to trick the machine into thinking it has more water in it than it does in order to get an extra strong brew. I feel stupid for having bought it.

There are many wonderfully-detailed reviews here, so I'll just give my overall opinion. This machine is stunning on the countertop and is intuitive to program and use. It makes incredible coffee, and we are a family of coffee lovers, so we are picky! We have had it for about a year now, and we absolutely adore it. We have lots of other Breville appliances (juicer, sous chef, fast slow cooker), and we are impressed with the high quality of all of them.

A tremendous coffee maker. Only complaint is the small opening in the carafe making it somewhat awkward to fill the water reservoir. Overall the machine is a tank and brews very good coffee

We love this Coffee Maker! We had a Barrista Coffee Maker for years and they are no longer made so we went with this one. All of it's technology is a bit intimidating at first but after once or twice it is a breeze. Instant ground coffee with your desired amount of cups...at the touch of a button...AWESOME.

This is hands down the best grind and brew coffee maker we have owned. We look forward to a cup of hot, flavorful coffee from the first cup until the last. We have used 2 models of Cuisinart and Capresso Team (run, don't walk away from this one) and Breville out performs them all. This unit is very versatile and provides settings to provide the right amount of coffee and multiple strength and flavor settings to suit different taste preferences. A pre-ground option is available for times when whole beans are not used. This coffee maker is pricier than some in this category, but well worth the cost. We just purchased our second unit to use in our vacation home.

We have used this machine for several months now and have previously bought Capresso machines with built in grinders. This one seemed a bit more complicated at first. After a few days of experimenting with the settings and reviewing the directions, it now makes perfect coffee. The machine itself is quality constructed (along the lines of a Kitchen Aid mixer quality) and we are very pleased with it.

Perfect coffee every time, either pre-ground or whole bean. The thermal pot keeps coffee warm for hours. Controls are intuitive and easy to use. I especially like the glow from the control panel when it brews, no more stumbling around in a dark kitchen.

The lid to the carafe was broken, also lid to coffee bean filler cracked. I think it's a good coffee maker for the price. I like to make one cup at a time for freshness. So that is a great feature.

I absolutely love this coffee maker. The coffee quality is by far the best that I have had from drip. I really like the way you can dial in the strength; it works, too! The coffee bot is easy to operate. Once you have loaded it up with water and beans, you just push a button or two and voilà. So why am I dinging it a star? Two reasons. Mostly because when the grinder starts, you are likely to bolt upright in bed wondering who the heck threw a cat into the garbage disposer. I mean, the thing is enormous already; a little sound deadening would be well worth the real estate. And secondly, the bean reservoir is pretty small (the same size argument applies). But buy it anyway. It rocks. It really does.

If you drink coffee every day, then do not buy this coffee maker otherwise you will get a headache in more ways than one. It has yet to work correctly flawlessly and easily or even at all. I made a mistake by not reading all the reviews on the internet - we would've saved ourselves from a caffeine headache and many lost hours of precious time. We will be returning this item ASAP. We will buy a different coffee maker at half the price and be extremely happy. By the way, Breville does make a fabulous toaster, however.
