Great looking boot. Bought these to replace some Born boots. Definitely not the most comfortable, and the top eyelets are a pain, but if you can get past that, they wear great and appear to have a great longetivty.

Great looking boot that is pretty comfortable. It feels slightly tight but I'm sure it'll just take some time to break-in. Overall, construction of boot feels very strong and it looks great. Exactly what I was hoping to get!

Had to break it in like most leather products, but once broken in, perfect. I like the quality of Frye boots and have several and just like the others, very happy with this one. Trendy boot that I get a lot of compliments on when I wear them.

Order these to wear along my trust Born's and have been very satisfied. Great quality leather, not as comfortable as my Born boots out of the box but over the last two weeks, they have softened and feel great. Definitely need time to break in so don't expect comfort day one. The color and size are true. No issues with quality at all - great looking boot!

Wonderful pair of boots. I've had these for over a year now. Not the most comfortable boots, a bit stiff for flexing at the ankle. But these boots more than make up for that in style and versatility. I've dressed these up with a shirt and a tie at work. Or dressed down over a weekend trip. These boots make packing for a trip simpler. Now, I just wear these instead of carrying casual shoes/ sneakers/ chukkas etc. These really held up well on a trip to Montreal in winter as well!

Well made and classy as hell. Breaking them in now. Fit the best out of several boots I tried on.

This is my first pair of black Frye boots with zip sides after three years of 40 hours per week wear only the soles needed to be replaced. Frye has a easy mail-in service to get resoling done. This second pair of brown lace up boots are of just the same quality. You get a little more tightness and heat inside with the laces up version. They are good for winter and in case you need to run from a herd of pretty ladies following you home impressed with your good looking Frye boots.

This is my third pair of Frye and my second pair of James lace ups. I wore a hole above the toe after 7 years and two resoles. The lug sole fits great. It takes a little more break in time. The boots are worth the money.

To the previous reviewer, I too have lived the last 4 years in a pair of black James boots. However, due to the quality of these boots, you can replace the sole and heel at any shoe repair shop for around $45. I have resoled them 7 times in the last 4 year, wearing them 5 days a week, 8-9 hours a day. They come back from the shoe repair shop looking like brand new boots every time. Great quality!

These shoes are amazing. Exceptional quality. Much better than you would find in a department store. Very stylish. Check out Fry's website for a more accurate shoe color representation. The 10 of this style fit my size 10 foot very well with the perfect amount of room for 2 socks or one hiking sock. Worth the money. second note is if you have a pump bump (excess of bone) on the back of your heel, you may find these uncomfortable for the first month, as your heel will burn bit. They break in with time for sure.
I'd also recommend:
frye, cole han, other designer brands.

Dark brown version is really much much better looking than on these pictures. Quality leather and Goodyear construction. Durable and strong, but not bulky. Very elegant and stylish, except sole. Wingtip version (I own those too) have too low instep, but these are perfect. Classic boots. Highly recommended as elegant casual boots.
I'd also recommend:

The perfect mix between comfort, fashion, and toughness. I weather proofed them and thanks to the traction these soles provide I can wear them in the rain or when there's some snow on the ground without worrying. I'm still breaking them in and yet the process has not been particularly painful or uncomfortable. I love that they are both functional and aesthetically pleasing!

This is a premium quality boot in appearance, materials and comfort. The "hammered" leather look is great for a jeans/outdoor boot. I normally wear a 10M. I sent back the 10M and found the 10.5M to be just right for wearing a heavy sport sock. The free return shipping process was convenient and relieved any concern with returns for sizing or other return issues. The high quality leather requires very little break-in. Not advertised as "waterproof" so I used Red Wing spray-on silicon waterproofing to enhance water resistance in snow and rain. I've only worn boots for a few weeks, so no long term experience to review, but am optimistic that these boots will perform well for many years...probably until I have to retire them for a velcro-strap sneaker.

I have lived the past couple years in the Frye James Lace Up boots. Not these, but the other ones with leather soles and the smallest wedge of rubber on the heel. I love the shape and style of them but had been going through pairs at a rate of about three per year. Once the heel wore down, the leather under the ball of the foot was surely next. I do not know if this lug version is new or that Zappos has simply started stocking them, but I am excited to finally have a pair of this style with a rubber sole (I am wearing them now). Not only do I expect their lifespan to be longer, but I will not slip and slide over wet pavement. It should also be noted that the black ones are not pre-coated with the faux-antique frosting as the other versions are. I hated that stuff. These (the black ones) have some sort of textured (hammered) finish which is much more elegant. I am a size 9 in Nike/Adidas/Puma sneakers but wear an 8 in these (both styles).

Gents, it's a great boot. As with most leather boots it will take some to break in. The color of the boot is better pictured on Frye's website and in person. The one in Zappos picture makes it much darker than desired. The best illustration I can give you on size is that I wear a size 11 in Nike. Undoubtedly, 11 is the best size for my Nikes. I ordered a 10.5 in the James Lug Lace up and could still squeeze more than a thumb width between my toe and tip of boot. Some might be okay with that because of the slightly narrowed dressier tip of this boot but it was just too much space for me to be comfortable with. I can't tell you the happy ending yet because I opted to change to the Johnny Lace up because of the seemingly wider toe and more casual appearance but they really are nice looking boots. I ordered a size 10 in the Johnny. Plus John is my name so it's more fitting. Wish me luck and good luck to you.

These boots look great, and feel great after being broken in. Fit wise they are mostly very good. A bit longer than expected, true to width, arch support is limited to non-existant. My biggest complaint is the opening size of the shaft. It is much larger than it needs to be when you don't have pants tucked into them, with the lug lace up system that means the laces get loose and sometimes fall off the lugs. Style wise they are great. I get compliments on these all the time, for the first week I had them and was breaking in many coworkers and friends noted that I looked more fashionable and asked about the shoes.

Although this is a great looking boot and being that it is from Frye you can expect high quality. Trying them on at first they were very stiff and surely after you wear these for awhile they should break in and feel more comfortable as well with any type of leather shoe. However the biggest drawback for these that I noticed when first trying them on and walking around with them in my house that the laces came out of the speed hooks very easily. I thought that if I laced them a little tighter maybe they would not do that. But after I wore them to Christmas dinner with my family, the laces came undone from the speed hooks again. This is frustrating and sadly I am going to have to return these and look for a pair without speed hooks. Great looking boot, but not enough for me to keep them and deal with laces that come undone often.

Given the price, I was a bit skeptical that Frye could deliver on this boot. Well, Frye did. It is a different look than most "heavy" boots and very well made. Overall break in period was minimal due to quality leather although the heel cup took a week or two to fully shape. The "whiskey" color is a bit lighter than expected but seems like it will weather to darker shade. Zappos delivered excellent service as usual.

These are good boots but I've had a few issues with them. The soles become extremely slippery when wet and walking on stone tiles. These are not appropriate for any kind of wet weather. The lace hooks could be a little larger & reliable though the color is nice. Overall, I expected more attention to detail and refined function (that matched the form) for this price tier.
