Oh woe, woe, woe.
I did not read the reviews. I was LAZY. I read them after I got the boot and sure enough, Frye boot run SMALL. I mean really small. Like I could not even get my apparently massive hoof down into the "shaft" or whatever they call it. I am still giving this 5 stars because it wasn't Frye's fault, it was my fault for being lazy and not READING. I may try to re-order but honestly I'm not sure if I should go up a full size or two full sizes. It's like, math. I don't want math. I want boots. Yet again, my math issues are not the fault of the Frye company or Zappos. I have math issues because of my seventh grade teacher. Well, enough about me.
Oh. And PS. I can't say whether the shoe "felt true to width" or "had moderate arch support" because as I said, I didn't read the reviews and ordered my usual size and these run small so my hoof-like appendage never got far enough into the boot to know whether there was width or arch support of an sock full or quarters in the bottom of the boot. Which would have been awesome because I would spend the quarters.
I heartily recommend that you read reviews and notice things like tons of people saying "This boot runs small." They are right in this instance. Sometimes reviews are obviously way off topic, like they are supposed to be reviewing a boot and it's obvious they are actually confused and reviewing an ice cube tray. Those reviews are not very helpful.
I doubt this one is, either. I just didn't read the reviews or I would have avoided this whole mistake which is entirely MY fault for not reading the reviews. Even the spatula review can't save me now. I throw up my hands. But I worship Zappos and their awesome service and attitude. They let me return the boots and they don't roll their eyes at me or write back a note, "DID YOU READ THE REVIEWS?" in an accusatory tone.
I deserve a rebuke but Zappos is holding back because they are refined and civil at all times.
Well I truly hope this helps someone avoid the stupidity I embrace and embody. Read the reviews. These run small. I could have said this a lot more briefly but I had a lot of coffee.

These boots are just okay. The inside leather lining on the foot bed peels up after just one wear. I had it professionally glued back down by the shoe salon at a high end department store and it did it again two wears later. I've heard from other Frye owners that this is a common thing with Frye boots. For this price I expect more. My cheaper boots don't have this problem! C'mon Frye!

For some reason, this boot has a more masculine vibe in person than it does on the website. Maybe because once you strap these puppies on -- and you'll remember doing that every time because there are no zips or hooks to make the lacing quicker -- you immediately feel their solidity. They are heavy on your feet and you can see why people are always going on about how Frye's boots last forever. The dark brown is a beautiful burnished mahogany color: dark almost reddish brown topped in places by almost black. Very nice. My only concern at the moment is that my heels are rubbing up and down against the boot as I walk. I know that'll be blister city if I don't wear them in gradually.

I don't give anything 5 stars, ever, until now. I'm one of those unfortunates whose default shoes are running shoes because comfort is just that important, but even I couldn't bring myself to traipse wintry London streets wearing running shoes. I have done that before, and felt awkwardly dressed the entire time, except when I was actually running. Vanity, vanity. Ecco, Mephisto, Merrell, Keen, Cole Haan Men's (lunargrand, wider than women's but still fun) -- I have worn them all, but nothing compares to these boots. I have spent the last week walking everywhere: streets, museums, staircases, gardens, bridges, towers, spires, domes, to a soccer stadium, and a heath, in the cold, wearing these amazing boots. I keep looking at other people's footwear to see if I like their boots better than mine, and I envy no one. My feet are happy all the time. I sprayed them with waterproofing stuff, but it hasn't rained at all, so I can't offer any opinions on wet weather performance. I have wide toes & narrow heels, so went to the larger end of my normal 8.5/9 range and ordered a 9. A couple of days break-in time (pre-trip) required, but so worth it.

Just got my boots and LOVE them. With tax they were close to $300 and this is considered a big purchase to me so I thought about it long and hard before ordering them. The leather is soft and smooth like butter!!! They fit true to size to me. Based on a lot of reviews I read I was prepared for a tight hard feel followed with a long break in period, but that is simply not the case. From day one they have felt great and have given me zero problems. I think this style is classic and therefore hope to have them a loooooong time. I got the camel color and they look exactly like the pictures.

What I particularly like about the boot is that once tied, your heel is secured in the back, not like slip on boots where your heel moves up and down with walking. I agree with another reviewer that the finish scrapes off easily. Nothing a little polish won't help. Love the boots anyway. They are true to size and width. Remember to use a waterproofing spray, and then you can wear them in all kinds of weather.

I'm not sure why everyone says to size down. I wear a 9, felt lucky to get the last 9 in stock at the time (in black). They fit well if not a little big. I mean, granted, I like the shoe to fit without tons of room or space so it's not clownish (9 is already a kind of big size). There is no 8.5 in stock, so I guess I'll keep the 9s. Still, size up probably is not the rule for everyone. If you have a pretty thin foot without a super high instep your regular size should fit fine. Wider feet or high insteps may have trouble as it's a slim-fit boot. Not much arch support. I added 1/2 foot orthotics. Even with those, there's still room in the boot. The awesome Superfeet green insoles did not fit though (too wide). In other words, plenty of space length-wise/sizing on-point if not tending towards running large. Could def wear a thicker sock to take up space, but I ideally would want to be able to wear a range of socks... Super cute boot... #fierce

I've only had the Veronica Combats for a month, and already these boots are in heavy rotation on my feet. I love that they get better and better with age. My feet do ache somewhat after a full day of walking, particularly on the backs of my heels, but that is to be expected when breaking in any pair of boots. I'm sure, over time, this will cease to be an issue. These boots pair well with dresses (especially flirty dresses and gives the look some edge), jeans and skirts. I think this pair will remain a staple in my wardrobe for years to come. This is my third pair of Frye boots, I am officially an addict!

I love these boots. They are so well made. If it was not for the patience of Zappos and their great customer service I would not have them now. I first tried a 7.5 then an 8 and then I gave up. All too small and tight. But then I tried an 8.5 and that was it. They fit great. For me a full size bigger than what I normally wear was right for me. I just love them.

These boots, Veronica Combat, are substantial and gorgeous! I ordered the “silver” when I meant to order the gray. They are just to-die-for beautiful. Placed an order for the gray so I can compare the two leathers. The light sole of the silver might make them the winner...will see when the other pair arrives. I want to be able to wear these to work with leggings and am not sure if the silver is a deal-breaker in that regard. The sizing is SPOT ON. I have three pairs of tall Frye boots and wear the same size in these as the others I have; Frye’s sizing is consistent. You need to unlace the boots half way down to properly insert your foot - that’s the nature of this style of boot. The Veronica Combat will feel stiff at first which is not uncomfortable, they just need to be broken in. The stiffness, in my opinion, is the sign of well-made leather boots. This style is definitely a keeper whichever color you choose!

I've been wearing these boots for a few months now. They take a LOT of wear to break in. Out of the box they're very stiff. The leather is strong and thick, which makes for an extremely sturdy and long-lasting shoe, but on the downside it takes a long time to get them comfortable. They look AMAZING. I originally wanted Dr. Martens, but decided they had too much of a rounded shape for me, and I wanted a boot I could keep unlaced at the top. I liked the sleek, subtle look of these boots much more in comparison. They are VERY narrow, so I wouldn't recommend them for anyone with wide feet. Size up! My foot is an 8 1/2 but I bought a size 9 just in case, and I'm really glad I did. They were a little tight the first few times I wore them, but they've loosened up enough to be comfortable. The leather doesn't scuff easily, and despite a very nasty winter both shoes look brand new. The laces they come with are pretty slick and come undone easily, so I might get new laces for them. Also they are HEAVY. Just walking up the stairs in these can be a bit of a workout, so constant wear is a good idea if you want to condition your legs to the weight. Overall I really love these boots, they've become a wardrobe staple that I wear every other day at least. They're the sort of boot that takes some conditioning at first, but will last for a VERY long time.

First and foremost, I want to thank Zappos for being so patient and accommodating to me! Based on the reviews I ordered a half size larger (7) than my normal shoe size (6.5). I received the 7's and one shoe was significantly smaller than the other shoe.. causing rubbing at the back of my right foot. So I called Zappos and they sent me another size 7. When I received the new pair, they fit perfectly on both feet.. but I felt like they might be too tight, so I called Zappos and they kindly sent me a 7.5 even though I still had two pair of the size 7's. I received the 7.5 the very next day and the left foot was larger than the right one-- overall the 7.5's on either foot were just too large anyway, so I ended up keeping the second pair of size 7's. I think there is a big discrepancy on the sizing since these boots are handmade.. which leaves a lot of room for human error. I loved the look of this boot so much that I was willing to go through the hassle of several exchanges and returns. Overall the Whiskey color is absolutely amazing, and the boot is very sturdy and well made. A tough but feminine look that will remain a classic in my closet for years to come.

I still own and wear the Frye Campus L14 that I bought when I was in high school (1971) so I know how well Frye holds up. This makes 16 pairs of Frye boots - it’s quality and dependability that’s I look for when spending this much. The Veronica Combat is no different - soft, laces that are practical and not decorative and comfortable. They felt a smudge short on one foot (but I have a toe issue on that foot) but damn, I’ve worn them every day, all day since they arrived. I used to live in the Veronica Slouch but the combat has quickly replaced them. Excellent footwear and believe me, you may think they’re expensive but for this level of quality and durability, you can’t beat it!

Love these boots! I've been looking for vintage, warn looking boots that are great quality and happy to have found them here. These boots do run small. I usually wear a 6.5 and I couldn't even squeeze my feet into them. I exchanged them for a 7.5 and that fit just fine. I have yet to wear them and break them in to comment further.

Love them instantly. Very nice leather. Yes, will need to break in a bit for the perfect fit. They make me happy. More narrow than roomy.

The distressing was ultra-cool. Very comfortable and true to size with typical Frye quality. No need to break in as in since these were comfortable out of the box. Color was exactly as shown and the Zappos service was excellent as usual.

I bought this boots in september 2017 and three months later, the sole of the left foot cracked, and the right one seems going the same way.
I do not walk 50 km per day. I did not climb the highest mountain in the country. Most of the time I drive so ...
I am so disapointed because this is not a cheap product.

Loved these! But they were just a little bit too pricey for how annoying I anticipate getting them on and off regularly will be without a zipper on the side, which is why I’m returning them.

These are my third pair of Fryes. Also have Harness 12R and Melissa Logo riding boot. I love all of them. I selected the Veronica Combat in part because it was so different from my other 2 pairs. It is also a little "less" of a boot, so it can be worn in warmer weather. I have to say that when it first arrived I was unsure whether I liked it. Just did not have the love at first site I had with my other Fryes. However, after wearing them for the past few days, they are becoming the first shoe I reach for in the morning. The style readily goes with all of my clothes and I enjoy their badass vibe! I have received so many compliments on them already. I purchased them in the black vintage full grain. Zappos is a great place to buy. Top notch customer service and they get my orders to me so quickly. Thanks guys!

These boots are cute and well made, but definitely run small. I normally wear a 9.5 and I could barely fit my foot into the shaft of the boot. Exchanged for a size 10 and I'm very happy. Also I got them on sale but when I wanted to exchange them they weren't on sale anymore, but a great Zappos employee helped me exchange without having to pay any extra, so that's awesome. They are a bit stiff but I suspect they will soften up over time. I do wish they had a zipper because there are so many holes to lace up, but I'm thinking I will just wear them half laced and leave the shaft unlaced.

Fit and size both spot on. I have plantar fascitis and must wear an insert in any shoe that doesn't have super support. I always take my usual size in Frye which accommodates the insert very comfortably. (Often I have to size up to make it fit). I was looking for a gray boot to do a lot of walking on a trip that will probably be cool and wet (England in June) and think that if I waterproof these pretty well they will be just the ticket for comfort AND they look great!

Absolutely love these boots! Bought them in vintage black leather. Comfortable right out of the box! I normally wear a size 7. Got these in a 7.5 because previous Fryes have run a tad small. I wear these with a medium thick sock and also tights. As a server, I look incredibly badass in a pencil skirt or mini and tights with these boots. Tons of compliments! My shifts are fairly short but busy...six or seven hours of walking and standing (mostly walking), and even with very little support my feet don't get sore. I was a Dansko girl till I found these. Don't let that make you think they are as supportive as Dansko! No way! Not even close! Just way more stylish and plenty of room in the toe box and a low enough heel so your foot won't be tortured. If my shift were longer I'd have to wear my Danskos but these are just fine. And great with skinny jeans too! Remember to buy a half size larger than your regular shoe size, maybe even a whole size if you wear thick socks.

A nice lighter boot. True to size and maybe a touch narrow. I found them hard to lace up due to the texture of the shoe laces, but those are easy to replace. The leather is a little soft/thin for my taste, but makes them a little more refined than you might expect. The rubber lug lift and outsole liner gives a LOT less grip than I expected since the treads are very shallow and the rubber itself isn't particularly grippy. If you're looking for a true combat boot, these are a bit too light-duty in my opinion, but they're lovely for casual or costuming wear.

I got these in the dark brown stone wash, and the finish looks great and has a vintage, worn feel to it. They need to be unlaced almost all the way to take them on and off, but nothing you can't get used to - especially if you're wearing them all day. A just-right fit once they're on, and they stay secured. With the right socks, my feet weren't even very cold walking around downtown in the Chicago winter. I would just prepare your heels for some rubbing the first time you wear them. Hopefully once they're broken in the shoes won't have that issue. Otherwise, worth it! I'm confident that these will last a long time.
