Hello Converse rep!!!
I wanted to share a compliment and some insight on using Converse shoes with my boys with physical disabilities.
I have two boys ages 3 and almost 6, that have cerebral palsy, a physical disabilities which caused physical disabilities that includes the need to wear AFOs (Ankle Foot Orthosis) on both their feet.
When my oldest boy had his first prescription for AFOat about 13 month, we were given a couple of options for shoes that would go over the AFOs, including StrideRite and Vans. I took him to be sized at StrideRite, and in order to compensate for the brace, I ended up buying “extra wide” shoes that were 3 sizes larger than his foot size. Once we got the shoes on him, he could not even walk in the gigantic shoes. One, since his toes pointed in, he would end up kicking his other leg, or two, he would trip over the shoes because his toes would drag. So, I went on a search with his AFOs in hand. I went into PaylessShoe Source, Kohls, Vans, etc without any luck on finding a shoe that would fit my son’s AFO with relative ease. I was told specifically that Converse would not work because they were too narrow, so I avoided Converse…at first.
Since I was running out of options, I said "screw it" and decided to try Converse. The closest Converse store to me is the Converse outlet in Petaluma CA. (The employees in this store are always great, by the way!) I tried many different styles over about a 40 minute period. Mind you, I did not have my son with me, so even if a shoe fit his brace, the shoes may not have fit when his foot is actually in the brace. After a few trials of buying and returning shoes, we ended up with a pair of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars withEasy Slip shoes, the ones with the elastic laces and the back that opens all the way down, with Velcro on each side.
I was so happy to finally find a pair of shoes that my son could actually wear and walk in. They fit over hisAFOs like a glove. And since the back opens up, I was able to get a smaller sized shoe. I was also able to choose a super cute design that could show off a bit of his personality.
With all that being said, I also would like to offer some insight how to make the shoes potentially better for those kids that wear them with AFOS. I have been buying converse shoes for over 4 years and for both my boys for over two years. I buy 3-5 pairs of converse each year (probably even more than that to be honest). So I am no shoe professional be any means, but I have an idea. First, I would recommend making the tongues wider. There is always some sliver of the brace shown becuase the tongue doesn’t quite cover all of the brace. Second, if possible, I recommend making the sides slightly taller or the soles easier to remove, as we have to remove the inserts for the AFOs so that the brace can sit all the way forward. And finally and most importantly, please do not stop selling these style of shoes. We can only find the toddler size at our local store, but I have purchased the larger kid sizes at Zappos.com, nike/converse.com and on Amazon.com.
These shoes were, and still continue to be, the best option in shoes for my boys. To be honest, they are a lifesaver. I tell all of the families I know about how Converse shoes are the best functional and fitting shoes for AFOs.
Thank you!

I’m really excited about these shoes! My son wears orthotics and I have been hoping to find a pair of these for a long time. Because the shoe opens so wide and the laces are elastic, I was able to get them on over my son’s SMOs with just a little bit of wiggling. Other orthotics parents know the stress of finding cute shoes that actually fit with orthotics, so it’s always great to find a win. These weren’t as easy to get on as my son’s PLAE high tops but these will be a great addition so we have a little variety in our show choices. I ordered the same size my son wears in PLAE (10.5) and these appear to be about 1/4” to 1/2” longer. Adding a pic of my son’s SMOs since you can’t see them with the shoes on in case it helps another parent out!

The Velcro back feature is great for high tops but the elastic shoe laces create a new problem, making it hard to slip into. Cut them off, replace w/ laces and the shoe is great. You may want to insert a cushy insole if you want arch support.

These are the most convenient and comfortable high cut shoes for kids. I bought these for my 2 boys. I got 2 colors of each. I love the velcro on both sides and easy to put on and off every day. I think these are 1 size larger. I would definitely recommend these to moms with younger boys!

The shoes looks so cool. The Velcro back entry easy to use to slip my feet!
I wear normally 5.5 youth. I ordered 4.5 youth in Converse size. It is a little bigger. I should have ordered a half size smaller. However, it is perfect to wear in winter because I wear a thick sweater shoe socks in cold weather.

My son loves these, and that is saying a lot because he is very picky about shoes. He is 5 and these are really easy for him to put on himself, much easier than the kind that tie up. I really don't understand the bad reviews about the laces and having to cut them out and replace. These shoes are great!

These shoes rock! Bought them for my 8 year old on August 2. And they have lasted 5 months! That is a record! The Velcro back entry is so cool and easy to use for him. And they look so cool too. He loves them and I love them. I'm back to get him another pair.

Awesome awesome awesome! My son has developmental difficulties and these are the only shoes he\'ll wear. They go on and off in a snap and look wicked cool, too.

The velcro back feature is cool; saves time, making the shoe easier to get into, but the stretch laces should be replaced with regular laces (I did this, and still don't have to tie them anymore) and the shoe totally works! The stretch lace defeats the purpose of "easy slip". I also insert gel insoles - all this is worth doing, because I love my All Stars old school look.

I thought these would be really cute for my 3 year old and they are cute, but they are hard for him to get on because they are high tops. I am returning for a pair of Keens, which is a brand we love! Chucks will have to wait until he's a bit older! By the way, they do run a half to full size larger than other brands. The Converse slip on version in pink is a huge hit for my 8 year old!

Loved the look, but like others have said, they run big. Maybe a half size? Also, the elastic laces and velcro closure are good in theory, but with no way to tighten the shoe once it was on, my 26 month old's size 8 foot was slipping around like crazy! So cute, but unfortunately we will be returning them and trying the regular lace-up version. Thank goodness for Zappos' free return policy.

These are easy to wear and comfortable and go with everything--and they quickly became my son's everyday shoes (even though we bought them as a required element in an outfit worn for a music group!). Unfortunately, the rubber sole has worn through in less than three months. I had hoped that they would last longer--hence the lower overall rating!

I ordered these for my six year old son thinking that he could put them on by himself and still get the look of a high top. For the first few weeks he needed help getting them on. Eventually he was able to put them on himself. Then he got them wet and they are difficult to put on again. I am ordering the regular Converse slip-ons today.

Very cute but wicked hard to put on my 4 year old son's foot. He has a normal width foot, normal instep. It is strange no one else has mentionned this problem. I have to pull the velcro part way back and yank the tongue really hard so that he can even put his foot into the shoe. After doing so, he has to jump up and down and wriggle something awful to get his heel in. We had to buy a second pair of size 11 Chucks, this time with laces. Those were fine to put on. It is just these velcro ones that we have problems with.

Fit was not adjustable. If your child doesn’t have a thick ankle the shoe will not fit properly. There is no way to have it comfortably fit to your foot.

After wearing them 3-4 times, the top shoelace came unattached from the side. Too bad, because we otherwise loved them!

Cool looking shoe, concept neat but doesn't work. My 8 year old needed help putting them on every time. The front part of the shoe, where you slip your foot in, had a tendency to fold over along the edge near the side of sole. Hard to correct even when you tried to prevent the folding when putting on. This made for rubbing and discomfort. The velcro never quite made it to the position you see in the picture and it always looked off. Regretfully, I would not recommend these to a friend.

I have a son that wore SMOs when he was younger and I wish these would have been available! I was browsing Converse for him for his bday and happened to come across these. I immediately thought to myself “these would be perfect for kiddos who wear SMOs or AFOs” and wanted to write a review solely based on that. So I started reading other reviews and sure enough other parents have gotten these specific sneakers for their SMO or AFO wearing kids. I cannot speak to these specific shoes but I can say that I put Chucks on my little guy for as long as I could with his braces. I painstakingly hunted for sneakers that were cool looking and not Stride Rites (no offense). VERY few shoes work with these foot braces as parents of wearers know, these sneakers at least look good! I hope Converse continues to make these for kiddos having to wear the foot braces. The one review about how to make them even better hopefully makes it’s way to Converse. Nike, who owns Converse, also makes a sneaker for kids who wear braces and those sneakers I bought religiously for my son. They are called the Nike Flyease and they have a zipper that goes all the way around the back and perfect for SMOs btw! So kudos to Nike and Converse for their inclusivity and forward thinking of Special Needs ?

My son loves these. They look cool. They are easy on/off. Only thing is top rubs on his ankle a bit so he should wear higher socks. He's had them on most every day since we bought and they go with all. I can't answer questions about sizing cause it's not my foot. I just had him measured and find he is a size larger than I ordered but hope these run bigger as salesperson told me so we break even.

First off, love Zappos! Customer service is amazing. Shoes arrive super fast. I only buy my shoes on Zappos and do bother with brick and mortar shoe stores anymore. Second, these converse are great. Got them for my 6-year old who, although he enjoys actually tying his shoes like a big person, takes way too long to do so in the morning. These are great as he just has to pull out the velcroed flaps and voila! shoe is open and ready for foot. The colors are really nice, especially the red stitching detail. I highly recommend them.

I've already made modifications to there shoes because I love the concept and style but felt seriously disappointed by the elastic laces. I am a woman who wears an adult 7.5 and can wear a boys' 6. Converse high tops are normally a paint in the butt to get on and off and it's why I don't wear my magenta pair more often. I bought these because of the Velcro sides but was surprised by the fake elastic laces. The elastic gives too much and makes the shoes feel loose. Too loose. I cut out the laces and bought a pair of laces. Once I did a bar lacing and double knotted it, the shoes fit much better. Now I just have to be cautious not to get the laces on the Velcro so they don't end up a fuzzy mess.

Let me start by saying that my son loved these and wore them a ton. With that said, be aware that they are not a true lace-up high top - they kind of slip-on, instead. The problem with this is that they never stayed as tight as my son would have liked. He got over it, but it is something to consider before buying. Also, they run large so order a size smaller.
