The boots were thrown in the garbage. Please read the warranty on Lowa's website which warns purchasers that the soles will literally come off the boots and there is no recourse after 12 months. An expiration date should be posted. The soles disintegrate and completely fell apart. That's exactly what happened, see the photo.

I bought these boots without any prior experience with the brand, based solely on reviews. Took it to Iceland on a 5-day trek through the mountains which included snow and ice walking, river crossings, mud, ash, dust, dirt. My feet stayed dry and comfortable the entire time. It turned out that there were a few other serious hikers with the same boots, too. No blisters at all. Steep uphills and downhills were no problem. Waterproofing was great. I wear a size 10.5 and have low arches, so it's difficult to find footwear. I highly recommend this boot. My friend's Keens were falling apart and leaking by the time we were done.

These are the first boots EVER that have stayed on my narrow heel. They were very comfortable from day one. I went on a 6 mile hike and actually forgot I was wearing new boots! I plan to stay with this brand. It is SO hard to find narrow boots and boots that work with a narrow heel are even harder to find. So far, I am very pleased.

These boots are great! I have a very narrow foot (9 1/2 4A), so I bought a 9 N and they are perfect with a thick pair of socks. I wore them for 6 hours around the house the first day and they needed no break-in. I've worn them in the snow and they are warm and dry. Thanks!

This is my second pair of Renegades. I bought the first pair to wear while working outdoors and for hiking. Last weekend I wore them all day during a marathon session of wood splitting, moving and stacking. The boots were comfortable all day and I think helped keep my lower back from being sore the next morning. This pair will be for riding motorcycles. I found them to be comfortable and flexible enough to use on the bike. I will say that though the boots seemed to have a lot of support, I did buy a pair of "superfeet insoles" to replace the original insoles and help with my on again-off again bouts with plantar fasciitis. This combination of boot and insole has worked very well for me!

Beware. Lowa sizing has changed in the US relative to the UK and Europe. Size 8 in the US used to correspond (in 2000) to UK 6.5 and EU 40. Now it corresponds to UK 6.0 and EU 39.5. I had to go up to size 9 US to get a boot with the same size shoe insert as I had with my size 8 Lowa boots from 2000. Other than that, the boots are great.

Wow! These boots are wonderful. I have never had a pair of walking shoes that fit my long narrow feet. I have never had any kind of athletic shoes that came close to fitting. These boots are not tight, but the narrow size is properly shaped for a thin foot. My foot does not slide forward and smash my toes. I am wearing these with heavy socks, so that probably takes up some of the width. Obviously, I ordered the narrow size. The boots are amazingly lightweight and comfortable. Right out of the box, they allow for complete flexibility of the ankle. When walking I feel like skipping, the soles are so cushy. Oh, and they are cute. My feet are very happy.

My best boots ever -
I'm not sure if I would call these boots light in weight compared to other boots out there. However, I'm a naturalist so, of course, I need my go-anywhere footwear to hold up to school field trips, invasive species removal, and other various mountain goat-like behaviors without blisters. These boots are it. My Lowa boots never needed a break-in period, fit like a glove right out of the box, let my feet breath while remaining waterproof in ankle-deep water and muck. The soles are fantastic...going on 3 years of regular use with very little sole wear (the outside looks a bit splochey from the copius layers of deet bug spray but have faired better than other boots). Since my uses of the boots are primarily outdoor in nature, I purposefully ordered a half-size larger. That doesn't mean that my true size wouldn't have fit, just means with the larger size I can wear any socks or go on any terrain without feeling pinching, rubbing, or excess foot movement. I'm amazed how much trail shock and accidental bumps my Lowas can absorb while keeping my ankle where it should be. This past month I took a tumble on a buried metal fence while marking boundaries and the boots kept my feet and ankles from sustaining any injury. An added bonus...the shoelace hooks up the ankle don't catch on pant hems...the hooks are rounded and well engineered.
I'd also recommend:
Ryka shoes - although they feel a half size smaller than posted.

I have really narrow feet and the Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Narrow are great for a medium duty hiking boot! They were comfortable right out of the box. And,they are totally waterproof. I have waded shallow creeks with them on and my feet were dry. I bought them in the dark blue last year, and when they became available in the brown, I bought another pair. Highly recommended for people with narrow feet! Oh yeah, Zappos has the best service of any online retailer I use! Thanks Zappos!

The Lowa Renegade felt great immediately! I have really wide feet so it's hard to find boots to fit me. I would love it if these boots were even a little wider, but I leave the laces lax in the toe region and the cinch them up around my ankles, and that works fine. They didn't need a breaking-in period. My first hike with them was 10 miles and they felt great the whole time!

This is my fourth pair of these boots. They require no break-in -- they're comfortable right out of the box. They've never given me a blister, which I can't say for any other boots I've tried. Not sure how much mileage one should expect out of a pair of boots, but I probably average about 500 miles a year, mostly day hikes of under twelve miles in easy to moderate conditions, and a pair of these lasts me about a year and a half. The women's wide size is not as wide in the toe as I'd like, although the heel is fine. I suspect if I were doing longer hikes in tougher terrain I might want a slightly stiffer boot, as I can feel a fair amount of flex and the rocks etc of the trail a bit too much after a longer hike. But for my typical hikes, these are the best boots I've found. Oh, and this is a trivial detail, but I appreciate the fact that Lowa offers its women's boots in a nice, neutral brown, rather than assuming (as some other manufacturers seem to) that since it's a women's boot it should only be offered in "girly" pastels or bright colors.

These boots are wonderful! I usually have trouble finding shoes or boots that are wide enough in the toe, but don't slip in the heel. These fit perfectly and have a nice arch support as well. I ordered exactly the same as my regular shoe size. Lowa suggests using a certain brand of boot conditioner and cleaner to maintain and extend the life of these boots - I wish that Zappos sold that also. That said, shopping with Zappos was a great experience! I originally ordered a different pair of boots, but they did not fit well. It was extremely easy to return my original order and receive these boots in exchange.

Review for the wide width versions: There is no way these boots are sized wide and/or there's no way Lowa tested these on real people with wide feet. I triple checked the label and, while it says "wide," these do not even come close to fitting my feet. It's not just that the toe box isn't wide enough, the whole bottom of the shoe isn't wide enough, and my feet overlap the edges of the sole noticeably. This isn't something I can fix with breaking in the boots or stretching the sides of the boot. I typically don't write reviews, but this was just too absurd not to post about. Everything looks otherwise well made. These boots keep coming up at the top of "best hiking boots" lists, and I really wish I could fit them.

Had these boots for about 5 years. Mostly sitting in the closet. Maybe 50 miles on them, light hiking. Last week in Alaska, we were hiking to the Harding Icefield and the soles began to separate from the shoes. One of them to the point that the whole toe was flapping (creating quite a tripping hazard). Needless to say, our hike was ruined and the boots are only worth throwing away. If they were worn out, that's one thing, but to simply fall apart is entirely another.

Unfortunately this shoe is not wide enough for my bunion. My bunion has stopped bothering me since I have been wearing proper fitting shoes. My bunion announced itself as soon as I put my foot in the shoe. These boots are going back.

Best light hikers ever. I've had this boot for 17 years now. My first pair lasted 12 years, the second lasted 5 (only because I forgot them for a week in the rain). Very little has changed in the design all these years. The materials are a little different, and the ankle is a little stiffer to break in; but other than that, I live in these boots come October, and for any hiking. I call them my 'paws', and the kids make fun of me, and I don't care. I have narrow, flat feet and they fit perfectly (at a half size smaller than I usually wear). Thank you to Lowa for making this boot, thank you to Zappos for carrying it!
I'd also recommend:
Asolo, if you want a boot with the same fit, but stiffer support.

These boots need a 10 star rating! My husband and I each both got a pair just before going hiking in the UK. Both of us have trouble finding comfortable shoes, so we were anticipating the worst. However, the boots were a total joy. They are very, very comfortable and needed absolutely no break-in time. They are very well made (European craftsmen) and handsome to look at. The lacing design makes them super-easy to get on and off, and they feel comfortable all day long. Of note is the fact that you can order them in a wide width, men’s and women's. I have very high arches and although the arch support is good, I bought Dr. Scholl's inserts, which made them fit my arch perfectly.I can't recommend them highly enough. Buy them! They are worth twice the cost.

I can't say this was "true" to size but rather the heel area was fairly wide and the toebox very narrow. Looks like a nicely made boot but I was only able to wear it indoors to try on and had to send it back. This is unfortunate because it looks like a nice boot.

This is the 4th pair of these boots that I have bought --over many years. I wore out the other 3 pair (but haven't thrown them away yet!) I'm really happy Lowa is still making the same model. They are good looking, well made (in Slovakia), made of good materials, plus GoreTex, require very little breaking in and provide good support for 5 mile day hikes in local parkland and tougher hikes in the Sierras with their grippy vibram soles. Maybe not enough support for a 10 day backpacking trip in high country. But otherwise, they are great.

Based on good reviews I took the plunge and am happy I did! My first outing was a 20 mile hike from summit to home over rough cinder, a'a lava, rain forest and pasture. Going downhill could have been tough on my toes but I tightened the laces around my ankles and I'm happy to say I fared well! Also my feet stayed dry with 8 hours of wet weather. Serious hikers...this is the boot for you! I am happy to have found these!

These boots are worth every penny! I had surgery on both of my feet in 2010 (August and November) plus I have neuromas in both feet. I had planned a trip to Ireland and was worried that I wouldn't be able to do much walking, but these boots helped immensely. I was able to do a fair amount of walking, hiking and bike riding. Now that my trip is over, I am still wearing them every day and finding them helpful with the neuromas. Part of their secret is that there is not much bend in the sole of the boot. Thank you LOWA for making such a great product!

This is my second pair of these boots- loved my first pair to shreds and simply ordered another. When the new pair came, I was surprised to discover that the standard medium width was too narrow. This is a first for me- I 've never had to order wide shoes. So, get these boots, but consider moving up in width.

After a grueling backpacking trip with snow, hail, rain, mud, and precarious stream crossings, my feet stayed dry. I even missed a step and submerged my foot into a stream and no water made it into these boots.
42 miles and my feet were well supported the entire time. I did have my own orthotic inserts, but I was amazed that my toe (I have hellux Limitus) was never in pain the entire time. The shoes aren’t a miracle and I wasn’t walking on pillows, but they kept my feet as comfortable and dry as I could ever expect from a boot.
The price point was high, but I don’t regret a dime because dry feet on a backpacking trip with weather that had most people turn around for their creature comforts is absolutely priceless.
I’m a size women’s 10 in street shoes and first ordered the 10s, but they were too small and went up to the 11s and they were a great fit.
The picture attached was from a mellow day hike where I was breaking them in and not the backpacking trip where the boots were truly tested.

These boots are excellent. No break-in time needed. I bought them and hiked on the Appalachian Trail for a long weekend with no problems. They are very comfortable and have really solid traction. I felt secure hiking on rocky, leaf-covered surfaces. They are worth the money! Do yourself a favor and buy these boots. This is the first review I've ever written, but these are so good, I felt I needed to let others know.

I found these extremely comfortable. I have very difficult feet; big bunions so they are wide in front, plus narrow heels. I tried on 12 or more different pair before landing on these. I hardly broke them in then went hiking in the Smoky Mountains. 5-8 miles a day with a 10 -15 lb day pack. They were very comfy. My feet always hurt, and they didnt. Toe box is roomy in width and depth. Trails were quite rocky and these have good traction and offered good stability. Not the coolest looking, but perfectly suitable. I wear a heavy wool sock for cushiness ( smartwool trekking or backpacking) and a silk liner. I typically take a half size up from my shoe size when buying boot or sneaker but here I needed a full size up.
