There are several extremely helpful reviews for this product elsewhere on the web, so I won't try to be comprehensive. I own a Utilikilt that's approximately 10 years old, and a Stumptown Kilts utility kilt purchased last year. By comparison, this one weighs practically nothing. The tradeoff: it's a much less traditional kilt. There's no pleating under the apron, so if you're a kung fu master, your opponents may get a brief glimpse of your naughty bits as you kick them in the head. (There is a modesty snap, but it tends to pop open as I sit down, which is exactly when I'm most likely to inadvertently flash someone.) The lighter-weight fabric, plus the reduced pleating, does give this a much slimmer line with less flare than my other kilts. The other major difference from my utility kilts: the bottoms of the pockets are sewn down to the kilt. Because they're positioned much more to the side (basically 3 and 9 o'clock), their contents tend to shift to the back as you sit down, which could lead to puncture wounds if you're carrying a really butch set of keys. But then, this isn't really a kilt for sitting. It's clearly designed to provide hikers with a bit more ventilation than you might expect from a pair of shorts. Overall, though, the price is basically nothing for a kilt. This one is comfy and decent-looking. It's not an all-around kilt, but it is a worthy addition to the arsenal. And because it's so light, it's great for travel to warmer climes.

Um, yeah. I love this kilt. I've never had a kilt. And this was my first. And I love her. Hiking in shorts will never happen again. I have so much freedom from chafing and so much more range of motion, it really isn't a joke. Don't waste your money on $200 kilts that you're afraid of ripping or staining on a trip. This one made baby deer run up to me. I had to buy a badminton racket to fight off all of the bluebirds that insisted on being friends. I can't decide if I'm Scottish or Irish. People keep asking. But honestly, get this kilt. The only problem I have with it, is that if you don't wear anything underneath, the button backs on the waist tend to bite into your skin. Other than that, it's an amazing first or tenth kilt. I just wish they offered it in olive drab.

Great kilt, the material is light and soft, the snaps look rugged. I've worn it only a couple of times so far, but I've gotten positive comments from those who have seen it, particularly women. For me, it works best to wear it at belly button height, higher than I wear my pants.

I am recently new to kilt wearing; this is my first hiking kilt. I took it out for a mountain hike yesterday. It was great!! I loved it. So comfortable, so relaxing. The material is light, but durable. The pockets are helpful, though I use a camelback to hold water and misc items while hiking, so I did not use the pockets. I enjoy the very simple look and design of this kilt. I plan on purchasing the tan one too. I wish there were more pattern/fabric/color options. I strongly encourage this kilt.

True to size. Well made. Great fabric. Good summer alternative to 5 or 8 yards of wool cooking your nads. Perfect for the AT.

Excellent quality, and of course utility. Took it on a 4-day hike in high heat and humidity in the Georgia hills, and it was outstanding. Got a few "looks" of course, but I think more guys would wear one were it not for ego or some such superfluous reason.

Great Kilt, I own 2 Utilikilts, a canvas one and a lighter one for summer. This kilt is by far lighter and slimmer. It does border on looking like a skirt due to its slim fit, but what the heck. Very comfortable with a pack on or just lolling about. Price is RIGHT. Wear it and you will be a convert. It assists in decreasing the posterior sweat factor on hot summer hikes.

My first kilt, purchased for a wonderful hike in the Grand Canyon. All I can say is "why did I wait so long?" The comfort gained with proper ventilation is such a plus. The only caveat is having to learn how to sit on a bench with your coed hiking group in some modest fashion. I paired this with ExOfficio boxers and avoided the moisture-related chaffing I've had in the past when hiking in the canyon. It's light and comfortable, and while I was concerned that it would be too cool, it turns out it's about the same as shorts, just without the extra moisture. Highly recommended, but be prepared for a few looks on the trail. Being 6'4" wearing a head rag I tend to get looks anyway, the kilt just makes it more fun.

I've wanted a kilt for a very long time but did not want a traditional tartan. This kilt is comfortable, fashionable, lightweight and I plan to wear it a lot. I may even have to purchase a couple more. This is my first kilt and I love it.

This is a great kilt very comfortable, but get a sporran to wear with it, and a kilt pin because the kilt fabric very light and easily blown by the wind. I wear it a lot.

Totally awesome! Not my first kilt, not even my first Mountain Hardwear kilt - (I have one of the originals ), but this is great looking, lightweight, dries fast. Packs well. By far one of the single greatest pieces of outdoor wear you can own!

I have owned a number of kilts, but find that the ElKommando kilt to be the most comfortable to wear in the Southern California region I call home. It is perfect for walking along a trail, or in the desert. It is great for the beach, drying quite quickly from a walk in the surf. Thank You Zappos for making a hard to find item available

I am relatively new to the kilt wearing world, but so far I am loving it. This is my first hiking kilt, and though I haven't hiked in it yet, I plan to do so very soon. The fabric seems very sturdy and the fit is very nice. I'd prefer a slightly shorter length, but in spite of that it is wonderful. The shipping on this items was freakishly fast. I am very pleased overall.

This is my first kilt and, for the most part, I love it. It is extremely comfortable and cool. I wore it while installing a storm door on my house on a hot day and it was wonderful. I also think I looked pretty good wearing it with a tool belt. My only complaint is the lack of belt loops. I normally wear a Leatherman on my belt and I can't do that with the belt hidden within a continuous sleeve from hip to hip.

Too bad Mountain Hardwear discontinued this kilt. Men need more hiking skirt and kilt options. In size XL, weight is 480 g (17 oz), and length is 58.5 cm (23"). Length is longer than I prefer for walking, hiking, etc. This kilt is good for wear while working around the ranch, in your home office, or casual wear. The material is light weight and seems to dry quickly. The two pockets are great additions. The pleats are larger than expected. The inner snap button back hits your hip, so you need to place a piece of fabric over it.

Like the weight and pockets. Seems to dry quickly. Fit was as expected. One button inside rubs my skin a bit, so need to cover it. Need to shorten it about 3 inches since I prefer not to have the fabric hit my knee. Should be really nice for backpacking, hiking, and exercise walking. Believe it has been discontinued.

This kilt is awesome. I have wanted one for quite a while, but did not want something as heavy as a traditional kilt (typically wool). Even the neo-kilts I often see are heavy canvas. Great for many reasons, but I wanted something lightweight. This fits that bill. That said, the sizing is a bit tricky for me. I hover between a 34 and a 36, so when I can find 35s, I'm pretty happy. I ordered this kilt in medium, which typically equates to 34/35. That was a hair too tight for me to be comfortable. I upgraded to the large, and that's a big leap. It's pretty loose on me, and quite long. Granted, it comes with a belt, so I can tighten it to fit my waist; but the length is the additional thing that I'm bummed about. I guess I'll need to trim up my waistline so I can fit that medium more comfortably! That, or find an excellent tailor to hem the large up. Overall: lightweight, comfortable material; but sizing doesn't quite work for an oddly sized guy.

I bought this kilt to work in so good fit and ease of movement were the requirement. Mission accomplished with the bonus of good looks.

It's light weight would make it nice for hiking. Unfortunately, it's not cut properly. If you have a flat butt, it might be fine. I felt really restricted in it. A kilt should not have any restriction at all.

I am not happy this gave me diabetes when I wore it. I say no, do not wear it. It does look good, though.
