The cap toe was much darker than the rest of the shoe. Not so much a burnishing as just an extra dark cap that did not go well together at all. Not as pictured.

I have owned about 10-12 pairs of AE 5th Avenue shoes and one pair of another style. They have all been great shoes except for one issue. After a couple of years use, the seam inside at the back of the heal tears and the leather curls up making them uncomfortable. The longer I wear them, the larger the hole gets where the leather is curled. I called customer service but they said this could not be repaired. This is not the bottom of the shoe where I would have pressure from weight of my heel but the back of the heel. The only shoe trees I use with these shoes are the solid wood type, so that should not be causing the problem. As expensive of shoe as this is, I should not have this problem. I have never had this problem with any other brand of shoes.

I had heard great feedback about AE shoes and tried my first pair. I was happy to get them and liked the way they looked and fitted.
After 2 months of wearing them - noticed that the heel started separating from the shoe today (and I had just ordered another pair of AE shoes y/day).
Went to the shoe repair guy and got it fixed - not a very expensive fix but felt really disappointed that I would need to take the shoe for fixing in such a short duration.
When I showed it to my shoe repair guy the first thing he asked me "are these Allen Edmonds", I was really surprised how he knew and he told me that this was an ongoing issue with AE shoes.

These shoes are really beautiful, but I'm concerned with the wear that's already starting to show after only wearing these once to work. The calfskin inside lining, while comfortable, is almost too soft. I've already noticed some wear / scuffing near the inside heel. My concern is that the heel will start to wear out there thus making my shoe ineligible for recrafting. I've also had to return a previous pair of these shoes because the welt line was too jagged.

I expected this shoe to be similar to the Park avenue, however I was disappointed. The quality is certainly not that of what I have expected from Allen Edmonds.
The shoe is not entirely bad, however I will not be purchasing another..
I will stick to the Park Avenue..

These are beautiful shoes but I had a problem with mine. The cap toe is longer on one than the other and the shorter one has poor broguing. I've attached pictures. The right shoe looked perfect to me. Hope I can get a pair that are the same. These are beautiful shoes. I have 6 other pairs from AE and looking to add to that. They would be 5 stars if not for the defect. Quality control should have spotted this. I noticed it the second I tried them on. As far as fit they are great and very comfortable.

This is my most recent and somewhere from my 10th-12th pair of AE shoes over the years, but my 4th pair this year. I've bought shoes with the same last this year (11D) that fit very well; this pair seems slightly narrow and I also don't think the hide is as nice as the leather on my other purchases this year as the creases appeared after just the first wearing and they looked several months old after just two wearings (creases), not as nice leather as a pair of McAllisters, a Player's Shoe, and a pair of Hale (all 11D) purchased this year (2014). This is the first pair of AE that has disappointed me.

I love AE shoes and have bought 3 pairs so far this year, Unfortunately I'm sensing a trend of inconsistent fit. All three pairs are on the same last and have drastically different fits.
I initially bought the Fifth Aves in EEE width because that seemed like the most likely fit from what I've experienced. Unfortunately the heel slippage was much more pronounced than in my other pairs of EEE width shoes. I went down to the E and the heel slippage is a bit better, but the toe box is too narrow. Unfortunately, I've worn them to the office three days and the toe box doesn't seem to be stretching at all and I'm not able to return them.
It seems from research on different forums that I'm not the only one who has had issues with fit consistency. It used to be I could try on a pair in a size on the same last and have it fit consistently from model to model, now I can't even get that consistency within the same model of AEs. It's very frustrating and something they need to address sooner rather than later.

I love this shoe and have had it for two years. I am a shoe fanatic and apply cream often and have already had them recrafted once at AE. Lately I noticed the leather breaking near the toe. While it is a small crack I was surprised this would happen to an AE shoe. I doubt I will get more than 3 years out of the shoe with a crack already showing up.

I love the style and the fit. The dark brown color has a lot of depth and character.
I have worn the shoes to work twice at the time of this review.
I am not at all pleased with how the right shoe has broken in. The left shoe has subtle creases in the normal areas. It still looks great. The right shoe looks horrible. The crease is at a major diagonal compared to the left. The creasing is very pronounced and looks like I have worn the right shoe 20 times more than the left.
Most that are able to afford shoes of this level have successful careers due to our attention to detail and our need for perfection. These shoes do not reflect that and I am disappointed.

I really enjoyed this pair of shoes until the stitching holding the sole of the shoe to the upper part of the shoe started to come undone. The result was the sole becoming detached in this area (near the ball of my foot on the inside edge).
Thinking I may have been too hard on the shoes or I had done something to cause this, I sent them, prematurely, for recrafting.
I got the shoes back about 3 months ago and they looked and felt great. However, the same thing has now happened again. Same shoe, same spot. But now the other shoe is showing signs that it is going to do the same thing.
This is my second pair of AE shoes. I think they are fantastic; however, if they are not going to last more than 3 months at a time, I cannot recommend them.

I bought my first pair of fifth aves 2 weeks ago. Within the first week, I noticed both heels have begun to separate from the sole of the shoes. I have not walked long distances or abused the shoe in any way and already I am seeing issues with BOTH heels. This is not the type of quality I expected when purchasing Allen Edmunds. If this is the type of issues I am having in the second week, I can not imagine what the shoes will be life after a few months.

The walnut brown Fifth Ave. shoe currently in production is not the color shown on the AE site. The AE site shows the older walnut color. I have an older pair of these shoes in walnut brown that AE resoled a few years ago. They have a deeper finish that is more reddish brown (not red like the AE chili color, but some red). I ordered a walnut brown in their City Derby sneakers and they are also very close to the that original walnut color. However, the shipped shoe is more flat okra yellow, like flat paint, with burnished dark color over-color on the toes. Look at the walnut William Wingtip Derby shoe. THAT is the color of walnut brown Fifth Ave. Same with the Manistee belt. I returned them, but AE needs to improve their website quality control and accuracy.

It runs big and the shoe doesn't look as good of quality as I have bought in the past. I am a little disappointed I spent this money and can't do anything about it.

This shoes are super uncomfortable. When I put them on they felt fine and figured I needed to wear them a few times to "break them in" but ultimately they kill my feel and I dread having to wear them. Very tight through the midsole and upper foot by the tongue. I ordered double wide for reference, while I normally wear just wide. They were so expensive though so it makes me sick to even think about.

Love the looks of the shoe. However, not comfortable. I ended up buying some insoles for more support and cushion.

I was surprised when I got these out of the box. Rather than a rich dark brown they looked muddy. They were also quite tight for me, even though I ordered E. I went to my closet and was surprised to find my other pair of Allen Edmonds, too wide for me, are also E (I thought I'd bought wider the last time). In the end, these weren't for me and I returned them to Zappos.

I ordered these in dark chili. They arrived with a few issues, and really should have never left the factory looking like this. The biggest issue was that they didn't match in color. The right shoes was dark, and fairly uniform in color. The left shoe had a dark cap-toe matching the right shoe, but the rest of the shoe was significantly lighter in color. There were also areas where the finish was applied sloppily, (and near a seam/edge you could see an area without finish). Worse still, the shoes arrived with a good amount of creasing and a light scratch on the sole, so it seems these shoes were not only delivered to one customer (me), but another person previously, who presumably sent them back for the same defects. It's one thing that these slipped through the QC cracks once, but if they were re-sold looking like this after being returned once, it's not a good sign. I have 7 pairs of AEs (AEs have been the best shoes I've owned and I was very brand loyal) and quality does seem to be in decline based on this and two other recent purchases. I sent these back and hopefully will receive a replacement pair without any issues. Recent experience leads me to think it's actually safer to buy factory seconds from an outlet store... you generally get an honest description of any defects before purchase, and it's LESS of a crap shoot than ordering firsts directly. Hopefully the company can turn the ship around before it's too late, especially with the recent price hike

This is my shoes number 19 from AE, always perfect quality and looks except for this shoe. I was surprised and disappointed for the color defect by the front and the back, tow different colors and faded spot .

These shoes fit and feel like any AEs. My walnut pair started out looking great, but have grown much darker in the 3-4 years I've had them. Even the "neutral" AE lotion seems to darken them, and unevenly at that. I wouldn't mind so much, but they're now a lot darker than the belt I bought at the same time (and which matched perfectly at first).
I was also disappointed with one aspect of the recrafting, when I got them resoled last year. I asked a clerk at a store if they could do anything about the discoloration. She wasn't sure, so she added a note saying to just send them back if they couldn't, so I could save the money and use it towards a new pair (in brown or dark chili, perhaps). Instead, they went ahead and resoled them - a fine job on that, for sure, but they disregarded the instructions and left me with the same problematic uppers.
I got a pair of Navy Neumoks that I love, so apparently I'm not done with AE as a brand, but I'd avoid this color.

I have a pair of Park Avenue shoes and a couple of other AE shoes manufacture on the 65 last and they have fit well. I purchased this Fifth Avenue pair in 10.5D (same size I always wear) and really just can't wear them. I thought at first they just needed breaking in but after wearing them several times I ended up with problems on my toes (corns, callouses) that I've never had before.
I recently ordered another pair of the Fifth Avenue in another color and size 11D, thinking maybe that would make the difference. It turns out the 11Ds are slightly too big. My size is simply a 10.5D on the 65 last and all my other AE shoes fit fine.
I simply cannot wear this pair of Fifth Avenue shoes in 10.5D, which is incredibly frustrating. They just sit in my closet looking pretty.

Poor quality and rather disappointing. Same size as previous shoes ordered but these feel different and I feel the left one is particularly not comfortable. Recommend spending this amount of money on an alternative brand.
