Great look, initially uncomfortable I've had these shoes for 11 months now, and they've really grown on me. Initially, they were quite uncomfortable: the back rim is angled inwards and was cutting through my socks and into my back ankle. I had to place a bandaid on my ankle for awhile, but after a few weeks, the rim opened up. They are now pretty comfortable. The black shoes look really nice with either jeans or slacks. I also have a pair of brown 8053s, which don't look quite as good, but the padded rims make them much more comfortable.

Best Docs available This is simply the best pair of shoes I have ever owned. They look great, they're very comfortable and my last pair lasted for four years. I just purchased my third pair. Doc Martins rock but this pair is the very best.

SOFTENING This works for any shoe that rubs--put some Vaseline on it! Another trick is to put folded up tissues or something to raise your heel up a bit. It also helps to put Vaseline on your feet at any time you'll be walking a lot to prevent friction. Once the shoes are "broken" you won't need the Vaseline. In a pinch I've used hand cream--anything "greasy".

great versatile shoe. Look, the chicks have been dealing with painful shoes forever without whining! Fact is, if you actually wear them, they will break in nicely in just a few weeks. I wear these shoes every day and I have owned several, they are the best, most versatile shoes I have ever worn. If you want a fashion statement, try Rockport or Timberland or some other silly footwear.

I've been wearing docs for about 12 years and I was warry about getting another pair because of the pain and stiffness factor, but the 8053's with the greasy leather and padded collar were too much to resist. I got them and put an insert in them because they are a little too big, but now they fit like a fluffy marshmallow on my foot. I work in a restaurant and they can take a beating and wipe clean. I stepped on a large chunk of broken glass in the parking lot and I was sure glad I had those bad boys on. I think we will be working alot of shifts together. They look good with any outfit and will always be in style.

i dont have these but i tried them on and i know what everyone means about the back. i bought the 8053s and they're great because they have a padded collar, so they dont cut into your foot like the 1461s. other than the padded collar, they look the same as the 1461, so the 8053s may be better for you if the backs of the 1461s are bothering you.

Patience. I know most of the reviews include some type of pain story related to wearing Docs. Get over it. You spend the same money on other shoes that don't last half as long as Docs and the little bit of pain factor is worth it. Wear them a little bit at a time until you get used to them. Like all shoes, there will be some discomfort, but once they break in, you never will take them off. I know, I tried buying other shoes and eventually resorted back to Docs.

Love this shoe! Great shoe! My husband is a physician and wears his continuously. We bought this same shoe two years ago and broke them in walking around London. Haven't had any problems with the heels as some have had. I have narrow feet and without the 1/2 sizes I wear thicker socks with mine. I think the 1461 is a great classic looking shoe.

Love them!!!!! I love my docs. I have had about 3 or 4 pairs over the last 8 years and would not trade them for the world. I don't remember the ouch part of them. My husband had a hard time in the beginning though.

I only have slightly wider-than-normal feet, but these shoes are so narrow I had to get a full size larger which makes them a tad too long. Otherwise, great shoes.

OK let's come to the defense of the 1461! These are Great shoes, comfortable, value for money, ultra stylish. Never had a problem with wearing these in! Would suggest that anyone feeling a twinge of discomfort simply apply a plaster / band aid to the shoe in the corresponding area! I have probably gotten used to Docs footwear and never wear anything else. If you like the shoes you should try the boots - I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Love Em! I got my first pair of these 9 years ago, I still wear them contstantly. They have still not worn down. I got a replacement pair from Zappos.com this year for Christmas. I'll be keeping my old pair to kick around in too. About the Ouch factor: You really need a good two weeks of wearing them to break your feet in. Once you get to know Doc's, there usually is not a problem. My older ones feel like slippers now. One tip to break in the back of the heel, take them on and off without untying them. I know it sounds bad, but it does loosen them and makes the heel more flexible...

I love this shoes :) I bought shoes of Dr Martens 3 years ago. The first month was terrible. I hated this shoe, but when my feet "learnt" Doc Martens, everything changed. Now I wear it very often because they're very comfortable.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a size to fit. UK 9 was too big, and UK 8 was too small for me. I REALLY wanted these shoes to fit; the style is great, and the quality seems top notch. I cannot comment on support or how durable they are. I usually wear a US 9.5-10 depending on the brand.

The US vs UK sizing seems incorrect when compared to actual fit. I can always fit in a US size 7 for flat shoes. While wearing shoes fully laced with sock I was able to walk out of these shoes - that is my foot slipped out of the shoe! I returned and ordered size 6 and the fit was better.

My first pair of Docs. Got 'em in "Oxblood" red. They are the bomb! Get so many appreciative comments/compliments. Seem to be total chick magnets, or maybe it's just the way they make me feel when I'm wearing them. I have only worn them a few times, so they are stiff, but are already starting to loosen up. On the flip side, the very supple leather and rugged construction suggest a very long-lasting pair of shoes. Only issue is that my feet are on the narrow side, and I still have room in these after pulling laces tight. Were they offered in 1/2 sizes, I might have tried to step down. An extra insole might do the trick, though.

These shoes are good. It is hard to find good shoes in the local stores anymore. I bought a pair of these shoes in 1996 and I still wear them to this day. They appear well worn but I like them so much I decided to get a new pair of the exact same shoe. I haven't worn the new pair too much but they seem like the original.

Well made, but not for uneven ground -- wish they made them in wide widths.

Bought these after a recommendation from a co worker. I work in sales and am on my feet 8hrs+ a day. They took about a week to break in. Definitely worth the price good quality construction and material.

Love this shoe. I am a big fan of Dr. Martens and have been wearing them for years. I ordered the same size as my other Docs, but these seem to run a bit small. I had to return them because I needed the next size larger.

Great shoes; too bad I had to return them. I have always liked the Doc Marten look. Unfortunately they don't fit my narrow foot. I tried them again through Zappos, but I will have to return them since there is too much movement in the heel. The movement will worsen when they loosen up. Too bad, I really wanted to have my first pair of Docs.

Boy’s shoes - I love these shoes, but while I chose these for being the least clunky they are clunky. They are very much boys shoes. I think they are great. They are pretty comfortable, but since I don't have much opportunity to wear them they are not getting broken in quickly. They are solid and comfortable, but will take time to soften up some.

DMs are always cool..... I ordered a pair with a wing-tipped design a few years ago, which I always wore, but am thrilled to have the classic oxfords again -- they go with everything! I only wish they came in half sizes. I am a 7.5 but, from experience with DMs, went with an 8 as I'd rather have the shoe be a little big, than mutilate my foot with a 7 waiting for it to stretch and break in. I think something is lost in the quality and it takes away from the authenticity of the shoe. Still, I love how they look and they are totally comfortable, if not a tad big. Definitely recommend them - they are the go-to shoe with jeans, slacks, or skirts.
