I bought Reef Smoothy sandals around 1997 and again 2008. Each pair lasted about 11 years. They were comfortable and looked good. I was a happy customer. So when the second pair wore out I decided to buy another pair. The pair I just bought (Vintage Blue color) look about the same (except for the brand stamp on the heel area which I could do without), but they are harder on both the top and the bottom. For my older feet, which have less fleshy padding under the bones of the balls of my feet than they used to, this is somewhere between uncomfortable and painful. Worse, the soles are stiffer than the previous design. When I walk, and my heel rises, and my foot bends at the ball, this naturally puts pressure on the strap to raise the rear of the sole. Since the sole is stiff it puts more pressure on the strap which abrades the skin on the outer side of my foot. I tried using my hands to manually flex the soles a couple hundred times, which (conceivably) may have reduced the stiffness slightly, but not enough yet. So far, if I am wearing them for more than a short time, I need to wear toe socks to protect my skin. This is not good. I wrote to Reef twice about this, asking if there might be any remedy, and after several weeks have not received any reply. So, strike one for customer service. Reef, if you are listening, please bring back the old design and materials.

Terribly slippery on many surfaces. Not a big fan of these.

Flip flop shoes are cushy comfort. My right foot strap was shipped to0 long. Consequently the right shoe slips when walking. Also, the right shoe arch supports flattens quickly soon after use. Does REEF have a comfortable foot bed flip flop with a stronger arch support?

I've been buying reefs for years, but they've become increasingly smaller and narrower. I wear a women's size 9 but the women's are now to narrow for me to wear so i ordered men's. Normally men's sizes run 2 sizes larger than women's. Because of all the comments about these running small, i ordered a size 8 and they are just barely big enough. It's safe to say these run 2 sizes small. I think I'm giving up on reef's

I've worn Reefs for over 15 years but haven't purchased a new pair in a couple of years. What happened to the sizing? I've always worn size 12 (as I do in all shoes I own) and ordered a size 12. This pair of Reef's is easily a 1/2 size smaller than any Reef I've ever owned.

I have purchased several pair of the smoothy, I wear a size 10. That was my first pair. The next couple of pairs were size 11. I just purchased another size 11 and they felt small. I compared them to my last pair of size 11 and they are 1/2 inch shorter and 1/4 inch thinner. Sorry Reef this will be my last pair.

I wanted 2 pairs of size 14 black Smoothies. You were out of them. I kept checking the site and finally saw one pair available. I ordered them. When I got them, there were actually smaller than my size 13's by a physical measurement. I called customer service. They said to use the free slip and return them. I explained that takes my time, my travel to the post office and then no shoes but I agreed. I then went to the chat on website and explained my situation. That person agreed to give me a $10 credit towards another pair and admitted that REEF had some sizing issues with that product. I decided to keep my small than 13 size since I needed something. I still want my two size 14 Black Smoothies....!! What's the problem, where are they!!

Size was small for an 11. I own two other pairs of Reef flip flops that I bought a few years ago. Those fit great, but these were about one size too small.

The shoes are really comfortable. I bought a pair last year and they wore out so I went to find a new pair this year. Unfortunately, they changed the design to include the braid pattern and now I seriously wonder if these are men's shoes.

Not comfortable to wear. The thong between my toes hurt after only two steps in them. The shoes also run at least a size too small.

I came to the party rather late it seems. I bought my first pair of Reefs two years ago at Orlando International Airport. Fell in love instantly. Purchased a few more pairs at home at a sporting goods store and wore them out. Going on vacation in a few weeks and I ordered three different pairs of Reefs. Booo! They are narrower and smaller. I wear size 8 and all the eights were too small. The worst part is that they are no where near as cushioned as my old ones. I returned them all. I almost gave up all hope and resigned myself to wearing my old ones anyways when I found the Cobian brand also on this site. Just received them and love! They are what Reefs were. So I decided to review to share that. If you're looking for the old super cushion Reefs, despair not. Order the Cobians. But size up in those as well.
I'd also recommend:

Will not buy again. Have to get one size larger than normal and even then they are small. BIGGEST PROBLEM....they may have changed their materials because after getting wet these flips curl up. Yep, they start forming a U shape. Also very slick when wet. Don't know what they did but I will not purchase again.

I have been a life-long fan of Reefs! I love everything about them! I wanted to buy my awesome boyfriend a pair of all-black smoothies for no particular reason. He usually wears a size 12. When I got the flips, however, they were a bit too narrow, and a tad too tight! I was super bummed. I thought I would send them back, and go with the next size larger (a size 13) but doing returns via mail/internet/with return postage etcetera is such a hassle. Next time, I'll opt for the larger size when ordering for a guy.

I'm an 11 and love the ones I bought a year ago. Bought another but the size is running much smaller this year, as others have noted. It's especially smaller on the inside toe area (right where I need it) - it's a good 1/2" narrower than the identical pair I bought last year (I held them up sole to sole to be sure). I also thought this size issue might be limited to a particular style (Grey Black) so I ordered the same style I bought a year ago (Brown/Brown) but nope, they are both consistently shorter and way narrower than last year's. I'm going to try again in another year, maybe they will sort out this issue by then. Come on Reef, you've got a good thing going don't ruin it!

What a disappointment! I have owned 3 pairs previously that fit perfect. The sizes are WAY off. Will not buy again.

I have been wearing smoothies for all my life and love them. For some reason I can't find them in shops anymore and they seem narrower. Also the straps do not seem as thick as before. 40 plus years! Hope your not phasing them out! ?

Great pair of sandals. Great arch support. You can walk for miles in them. I have bought these for my husband and myself for years. They have one big problem though, they color the bottom of your feet black. These in particular are worse than my other pairs. The older ones would take a while before they did that, but these after a couple of days of wearing them the bottom of my feet got black. Hence I give a low overall score.

These flip flops became unusable after leaving them in the sun. Curled up and became unwearable. Disappointing because now they don't fit.

The right sandal is way to wid. Difficult to walk up or down stairs and keep the sandal on. I think the sandal was defective as it is much wider than the left sandal which fits fine. Please send me a replcement.

I started wearing the SMOOTHY approx. 25+ years ago and it WAS thee premier flip-flop. It has descended into oblivion and is not even a reasonable facsimile of its former self. The consistency of the cushioning was exquisite and top-of-the-line, didn't squish down in a month like the Teva Mush does now, and you got PLENTY of mileage out of them. Today they're virtually hard as a rock and the quality is gone. I've tried a few of their other models and from what I see, Reef is going to make these back end heavy sandals until they're out of business and they're going to be sitting around wondering why....because you don't listen.
