I've worn Merrells for years and am still a big fan, but was intrigued by the price of the Garmont Flash III (quite reasonable for a Gore-Tex boot). Since Garmont is known for ski and alpine boots, I surmised they should make a good, durable hiking boot. So far, I've been right. Boots are very comfortable with the asymmetrical lacing and, like all my boots, replace the inserts with ones by Sole (Ed Viesturs Model). Boots are built strong and meant to be used. The soles are aggressive. I was worried about them being heavy, but they're just right. Not as light as Merrells but they are built a little more rugged, so you get what you par for. They're good for hard-core hikers and those of us who want to become hard-core hikers.

First of all, Zappos is terrific! Fast service and when you need it, returns. I don't know why anyone would go out to shop for shoes when Zappos is available. These hiking boots were exactly what I wanted. Break in time very short and comfortable almost immediately. It will take some time to see how they wear, and hold up to adverse conditions, rain, mud, water, etc., but out of the box they fit and are comfortable, and good looking. I recommend them highly.

I have been hiking for over thirty years and find these to be by far the best boots I have ever worm. Broke them in on six days of hiking in the Smoky Mountains with nary a discomfort. I am most impressed with the support with scant compromise to weight and flexibility. And oh yeah - My feet remained dry after several stream crossings.

Feel great. Fit as expected. They needed no break in and were ready to hike on rough terrain. Love them.

These are great hiking boots. I went for a camping last weekend, walked three miles uphill in the mountains. At least twice there was a moment when I realized that if not for these boots I would have damaged my foot. They have great support for the foot and correct your mistakes when you put your foot to the ground wrong.

Excellent comfort and available in hard to find size 12.5, seems that most retailers and shoe makers do not accommodate half sizes beyond 11.5 Although limited selection I found these and they were a match made in heaven. Right size, right color, Gore-Tex materials, Vibram soles, and amazing fit / comfort. They fit true to size and feel like you're wearing normal sneakers. Very will built and have no regrets whatsoever. Garmont also included insert shims to accommodate various shaped feet, the extra mile go along way! Highly recommend these over Merrell or other comparable outdoor footwear.

I have had my Garmont Flash III XCRs for a few weeks now. I am very pleased with the fit and performance of the boots. They are extremely comfortable and have taken little time to break-in. The asymmetrical lacing system works well, as the boot flexes without binding or pinching from the metal lacing tabs. We have had plenty of wet and snowy weather this winter and the boots are warm and dry. I wanted a mid-top boot to compliment another set of full-top hiking boots and the Garmont's are meeting my specific needs as I hoped they would.

I also like my Vasque hiking boots very much - they are about 5 years old now and still work great!

Great hiking boot. Bought these for a recent trip to the Smokies and couldn't be happier. Very comfortable from the start. Stepped in ankle deep water and came up dry. Wear them now almost every day. Great looking boot with the comfort of a tennis shoe. Got a half size up and fits perfect.

.I was really happy with the Garmont Flash III XCR hiking shoes. They have good traction on sandy beaches and on dirt trails. They are very comfortable and have a cool, modern design. Easy to put on and take off. Lacing of the shoes provide extra support

This will be my third pair. They wear out too soon, only about 15 months average life, where the upper meets the toepiece. But they are such a heckuva good shoe that I love 'em anyway.

Bought and wore them for 1 week, 10hrs a day in construction conditions. Seemed stable but extremely stiff. I didn't mind that except for the upper ankle area. It's so, so stiff, that it kept digging into my ankles even with thick socks on. In the end, I gave up and moved on. Not a great buy.

Water resistant for a little while, but certainly not waterproof. My feet got wet walking through wet grass in these. Excellent arch support but, overall, not very comfortable for all-day walking.

Overall, loved these boots and wore them for roughly two full seasons of hiking. They were comfortable immediately on the trail and felt like they were already well broken in. I felt like they were custom made for the shape of my feet. However, I must say that these boots wore out extremely fast. After less than 200 trail miles they began to completely fall apart, and the side stitching on both boots began to rupture and the soles began to disintegrate. You're paying a lower price for these boots though, and I think the low cost outweighs the durability given how comfortable they are. I'm contemplating buying a second pair, even though I know not to expect more than 200 trail miles from them.

Owned for: 1 day (to compare) Review: Boots feel indestructible while wearing them. The sole is stable and gives your foot and ankle a stable platform. The cushion around the ankle gives tremendous support. I would enjoy using these outdoor doing construction or farm work in the winter. As far as hiking and using every day during rainy/snowy periods, I like a boot where I can feel the ground and it allows for my food to flex more. Not sure because I don't have the time to break them in, but judging by how stiff they are, I assume it would take a while for these to be broken in. I was surprised by the other reviews saying they felt broken in out of the box, mine did not. Sole is aggressive giving great traction. Couldn't figure out what the shank insoles are all about but they feel stiff and won't breathe like the insoles that come with them. The instructions say they are for people who like a firmer cushioning, but they are not the same as insoles. They are flat cutout hard foam material (strange). Thanks Zappos!

These boots lasted about a year with lite to moderate trail hiking. Very comfortable and looked great, but the material near the toe box cracked and split, leaving a 1 inch opening to my foot! Then, one week later a metal speed lace separated from the boot, leaving no way to lace it. Not worth the money.
