This review is about sizing. I hope my review will help someone not suffer through a painful break-in period so many others have described. Although I must first say that I LOVE the Slate Burnished Antique color! It s gorgeous. It does have a beautifully worn-in look, so you gotta like that look. That said, this is my first pair of high-quality, slip on, cowboy-style, boots, so I ve not had previous experience with boot sizing, which I suspect is the case with some others who ve bought these. I am a true 6.5, although I occasionally buy boots in a 7.0 for thicker socks. These were only available in 6.5 in the slate. When they arrived, I was bummed to find they fit across the top of my foot, but were too loose in the heel. My heel would rise up when I walked, and my foot slid down towards the toe. I decided the fit was clearly too large and ordered the 6.0 for comparison (I haven t worn a 6 since I was a kid 30-some years ago). When the 6 s arrived, I found I had to unbuckle the strap across the top of the foot to get them on. Once inside, the boots felt too snug across the top of the foot, but felt perfect in the heel. My husband said, keep the smaller boots , the leather will stretch and they will break-in . Seemed like sage advice, however, I searched the internet anyway, and read articles on cowboy boot fit which said there should be some slippage in the heel when new. I decided to call the experts, so I contacted Frye. The woman at Frye told me she had the exact same pair of boots and she happened to be the same size. She said she tried the 6, 6.5 and 7, and ended up keeping the 6.5. She said the fit in these type of boots (pull-on) will be different than with other shoes and even zippered boots. The heel needs to be loose, so you can slip the boot on (remember, I had to unbuckle the strap she said you shouldn t have to do that to get into the boot). She said as the boots are worn, your heel will sink down and create a cup in sole, and your heel will settle down into it, so the fit will begin to feel tighter as you wear them. She said because of that, the size 6 may get increasingly tight and feel too small, as the wear-in. Well, during the time that I was on hold before I talked to her (about 20-25 min) I d been pacing around the house with a 6 on one foot, and a 6.5 on the other. Wouldn t you know it, I was getting rubbed raw by the smaller boot. I decided to keep the 6.5, and I ve found she was absolutely correct, the heel tightened up and the boots fit perfectly. I love these boots and actually wish that spring wasn t on the way so I could wear them more. A word of caution, if you choose to pace around your house for an extended length of time. The bottoms of the boots, being leather, are delicate, and also have a bit of a painted finish on them. You'll want to stay on carpeting and lift your feet, so that if you should decide to return them, Zappos doesn't say the bottoms look too worn.

I ordered these in slate, and my God they are beautiful. I normally wouldn't review a shoe that already has so many 5 star reviews (what would I have to add that's new?), but I just want to put this put there for my fellow ladies with wide feet: Frye Veronicas do stretch. Out of the box, these were almost too narrow for me to put on, but I took them to a cobbler and for $9 they stretched them a full size wider. After that, they were wide enough to wear, but still quite uncomfortable. Plus, the left shoe rubbed my heel very badly - past the point of blistering, to broken skin. I have several friends who wear Fryes all the time, and who told me in no uncertain terms that all Fryes need to be broken in. No pain, no gain. But still, I was getting worried that I'd just spent a lot on a pair of boots that I would never be able to comfortably wear. But I pushed through the discomfort (taping my heel with bandaids and duct tape to reduce friction against the skin), and wore them every day for a couple of weeks, trusting that Fryes are made with quality leather, and that quality leather will stretch to fit my feet. And they did! As I type this, I am wearing my Frye Veronicas and they feel like bedroom slippers. I just really wanted to put this out there somewhere, because when I was feeling discouraged I did a lot of googling about how to break in Fryes and didn't come up with much.

I was actually afraid to try these boots because I have wider feet and a high instep and Fryes were always too narrow or pinched at my instep. The leather in Fryes is usually thick and heavy and bogs my feet down, but not these! They fit my feet like a glove and I can tell that they will feel even better with time. The leather is soft and the top circumference of the boot nice and wide too. Support inside the boot is good. The fit runs a little snug, especially for anyone with a high instep or wider feet, go up half a size at least. Although length is about right. There is a nice low heel, that is very comfortable for Fryes. I will have these for years!

Super cute boots to go with spring dresses + more! At first I had my mind set on Carson boots, as they came in so many colors, but I was won over by these Veronica Shorties once I tried them on. For me (I'm 5'4"), Carson boots stopped at the biggest part of my calves and made me look dumpy, whereas these boots stopped just below that spot, giving me shape & made my legs look thinner. Since I planned to wear these with spring dresses for that sweet + tough look, these would be perfect! Even my husband likes them, which is a rare feat.

I have these in the "slate" color -- kind of a dark grey -- and I absolutely love them. I usually wear a 9 in Frye and the same is true with this boot (with a thicker sock). Heel's a bit loose, but this is true of most boots for me, because I have a somewhat narrow heel. I also have a medium-width forefoot and a rather high arch. The Shortie fits like a dream -- plenty of cushioning and arch support, built like a tank (the boots, not me) yet not at all heavyweight -- and beautiful, too! I think they will last forever. Highly recommend!

I just got these boots in the black and love them. I am normally a 8.5-9 (I have the Campus boot in an 8.5) and went with the 9 on this one based on other reviews. It fits perfect. I can wiggle my toe, plenty of room to wear with socks in the winter. I can also wear them in the summer barefoot or with a thin sock and they fit fine. I can't wait to break these in (although they are comfortable from the first time I put them on). They look great with shorts, leggings, skinny jeans and dresses! You can also wear them year round. Perfect to go out in but also to just run errands in. I am 5'5" with medium athletic calves and the top of the boot comes perfectly to my mid calf with plenty of room to spare around the calf (about 1.5 inches room at the top). Very classy with a bit of edge. I wish I could afford to get them in every color! I just love Fryes, they are timeless classics that will never go out of style. Couldn't purchase off Zappos because they didn't have the plain black color, but I love Zappos! Who can beat free shipping and returns?

Great for Larger Calves - I have trouble finding boots with a shaft that is large enough for my ankles and calves - these work! They are comfortable and I am really enjoying wearing them.

Super comfy right out of the box. I’m between a 9 and a 9.5. Lately I’ve been buying more 9.5’s but these I tried the 9’s and I’m glad I did. Plenty of room. No heel slippage like other reviewers said. Easy to slide on (which I worried about bc I don’t have narrow feet). The one difference is, in the pics the black boot looks like it has a brown sole. The boots I got have a black sole. I didn’t like the brown soles and almost didn’t order them bc of that so I’m glad they are actually black. Great boot. My first Frye boot. Worth the money.

After much buying and returning, I ended up with this perfect boot in terms of shaft length, style, and color (I have the dark brown). After reading all the reviews, I ordered my true size, 7.5, and after wearing them for a day, they are definitely a half size too big even with socks. They're super comfortable though, but I would have preferred them a half size smaller.

These boots are amazing! I highly doubt I will ever wear another style of boots again. I have never spent this much on shoes before, but they are worth every penny. I have had them about two months now and love them more every day. They were painful to break in, but after about a week, they felt great. I usually wear an 8½, got these in a 9. The 8½ would not have fit. They were snug at first, but the leather stretches out as they break in. I have a wide foot and muscular calves and they fit wonderfully. They look super cute with skinny jeans, dress/skirts and tights and I plan to rock them with summer dresses too! If you are on the fence, buy them!

Nice boots - I just got these boots today. They are really nice. They seem true to size, but the heel slips. I'm wearing them with heavier socks just to break them in. Hopefully in a few days they will fit like a glove. I love them!!! P.S. If you have wide feet, these may not be the boots for you. Hope this helps.

These boots are heaven. I wanted a pair of Frye for a long time, and I finally splurged. I wish I had done it years ago. I have planar fasciitis and I have been wearing Dansko and Sanita clogs - which are good - but I still have some heel pain with them. Because these Frye's have a heel cup, I can wear them all the time with no pain. I know they are not technically comfort shoes, but I wanted to share that experience because I was concerned I wouldn't be able to wear them. I am a true 7.5 and ordered 7.5 and had no break in time. They fit perfectly from the moment I put them on. I can wear tights, thin socks, and thicker socks - but don't normally wear super thick socks with them. I purchased the vintage brown leather which is beautiful. I'm going to order another pair in black. I can wear these with anything - jeans, skirts, dresses, boot cut trousers - I can tuck skinny jeans in or wear boot cut jeans on the outside. I saw someone said they don't work with skirts, but I have short legs and can pull it off.

I love these boots! I have wanted a pair of frye boots forever, i had a hard time finding a pair that would fit my short frame (under 5 ft) and muscular calves. I did not have success with the Jane 14L (too tall for me way too tight) and cavalry (too tight). Returns were easy with Zappos. But the veronica's are perfect. Maybe i would have success with the campus 12? I went to the frye website to get a better idea of how they would fit (usually the measurements on their website are for a size 6). Thanks zappos!

Bought these in the butter. They are made of garment leather, so it's really nice and pliable, not stiff and hard like my Harness boots. Wanted the taller version, but they were gone, so I ordered these. They fit is right on, a little more true to size than some of the other Frye boots I have. Probably narrow for most people, but thank heaven I have narrow feet and it's nice to find shoes and boots that actually fit, and I'm not swimming around in width.

Love these boots! Having a med-wide foot, I highly suggest going up 1/2 size. The cognac color is awesome -- somewhat of a whiskey/orange color at the top and beat up brown from the ankle down. It took a couple of pairs to get proper fit but Z's always awesome on returns. If you have fuller calves, definitely go for the shortie! Awesome boots, wish I could get every color. Beware - the distressed boots definitely have the look. If you want dressy, do not get distressed or burnished.

Comfy and classic Frye! These are great! Very nicely made and a good fit. I have slightly wide feet and large calves and these fit perfectly in my regular size. They are a great height too -- nice with a longer skirt and very cute with cuffed up jeans. Because they are wider (and a bit shorter) I can actually tuck narrow jeans in -- something difficult for me normally.

I originally ordered the Shirley strappy short but the fit was too tight even ordering a size up! I went with the Veronica short instead and I'm glad I did! So cute I wear them almost every day. I wear a 7.5 or an 8 depending on the shoe. I ordered an 8 in this boot and it fits perfectly.

The boot is a bit stiff at first, and it definitely rubs my heels some. I am hoping it breaks in as I continue to wear them. The toe is a bit more square than it looks online. Overall an OK boot. I'm not sure it's worth the price. It is one of the few boots Frye puts out that fits wider calves (mine are 15 1/2 inches).

I read so many reviews before ordering and still had to return these boots two times to get the right size. I am a true 7.5B and had to go down to 6.5 in these, and there is still room for socks! Important to note that I have low arches - my feet slipped right in. Also, the burnishing has a faded white powder look to the shoe which doesn't come across well in the photograph. So far, I love the 6.5. These are for keeps, finally!

I ordered the Veronica Shortie in the dark brown vintage and it looks exactly as pictured. The leather is very durable, but it can get marked if you're not careful. I'm a size 6 and ordered the 6, but I have wide feet and this boot was very tight when I put it on. However, the length of the shoe is perfect and the boots loosened up after I wore it all day 3 or 4 times. I was initially so-so about this purchase, but now I really love these boots and can't wait to wear it with dresses this spring!

I put these on and was in foot heaven. It has been 25 year since I\'ve had a pair of Frye boots. It was all I wore in college. I came back to Frye because I remember how they are like a pair of jeans - over time they become part of your foot and feel wonderful.\r\n

I just received these boots, and I am hooked! I have several pairs of Frye's, and have been a Harness boot addict for several years. I bought a pair of Engineer's, but the top (especially the back) of the boot had rough spots that rubbed my leg raw and bleeding. These Veronica's are fabulous! The leather is much softer and of higher quality than any other Frye boot I've worn. Sleek and sophisticated look and these are now my go-to boots! Thanks Zappos!

Love this boot! Love the different olive green color in a boot. Frye boots run a little larger than shoes, so 9.5 feels good even though I might wear a 10 in some shoes. Quality is good...leather on shaft of boot very soft and on foot, firm. Will be a bit more comfortable once broken in. Very unique - I finally have my first pair of Frye boots! - COOL!
