I so wanted these to work. They are gorgeous boots! I purchased the Gaucho color, size 7.5. (that is my consistent shoe size in boots and sneakers). The left boot fit fine, didn't have trouble getting into it at all. The right boot required the plastic bag trick, and once I got it on it was just not comfortable. I think if I had stuck it out and worn them consistently they would have stretched and been fine. I just don't have the time. The other reason these went back was there was what appeared to be a slice in the boot between the leather and the sole on the heel of the right boot. These are just too pricey to have any imperfections in them. So back they went.

These boots are exactly what I wanted. They are so cute with everything. I've worn them with skinny jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses and I plan to wear them with some cut-off shorts this summer! (Hello trashy!) They are very well-made and take some breaking in but are well worth it. I was worried about my atheletic calves but they fit fine. They are fine for browsing the mall or riding my sportster. I've worn them almost everyday since they arrived! Best boots ever! The only thing that I would like to change is the height of the shaft. I am 5'7 and they come up to about 3 inches below my knee. I wish that Frye made a 17R but they don't. I really wanted them to come all the way up to my knee. Other than that, they are perfect.

I was surprised by some of the sizing reviews on this product. For me it was consistent with all other Frye products I own. I am a narrow 7.5 in flat shoes and a 7 in high heels (4"+) and always buy a 7 in Frye (harness boots, heels, etc.). This boot was no exception. If sizing is in question, order your *normal* size in Frye. This boot is very attractive and comfortable straight out of the box. Even though I have very muscular, athletic calves, they fit over a lightweight, narrow leg jean. At 5’2”, they hit me 1-2" below the bottom of my knee cap. The brown color is very attractive - casual, but rich and prone to developing a very nice patina, rather than looking scratched. One note: Purchase a long-handled boot/shoehorn if you don’t have one already. These are tight to put on over the instep, especially when brand new (not a problem once they are on, just a potential problem while pulling them onto your leg). A shoehorn helps immensely.

You cannot go wrong with the Frye Engineer 15R! Or with ordering through Zappos. Free shipping both ways makes trying these wonderful boots a no brainer. Like other customers, I have to agree that at first they are difficult to get on. However that goes away with time and wear. These boots run true to size. I wear them all the time with tall socks and skirts - and always get compliments. I am a teacher and am on my feet all day and they are as comfortable as the day is long! If you are going to something a little edgy or industrial then these are what you want. I only wear Frye boots.

I bought these in black. I was surprised they weren't lined, as my other 2 pair of Frye's are, but perhaps because these are full-grain leather. I love the look of these, and they even surprisingly make your foot look smaller, despite the super chunky boot style. These are VERY stiff and heavy - they will definitely take some breaking in. I will probably like them more next year, similar to my Campus boots that are about 7 years old. These just get better with age. Also, if you have a medium to narrow foot, Frye's are true to size. I have 3 pairs of different styles and they are all 6.5, just like all my other shoes. When boots fit properly, they should be snugly (not tight) across your instep and slip in the heel slightly.

Someone on here called these her boot soulmates and I have to agree. I have them in black, size 8 and the gaucho, size 7 1/2. The black ones I have are very stiff, thick leather with an even texture and I personally found them very difficult to break in - in the end I just wore them on a long walk – couldn’t wear them again for a month afterwards (could barely wear ANY shoe for a month afterwards!), but now they’re perfect - and my feet recovered. The gaucho ones took no breaking in at all, they were comfortable immediately - a little difficult to get over my high insteps, but this will become easier in time - the leather is softer and more grainy in places on this pair. It’s difficult to find Frye boots which are a perfect fit - sometimes you have to try on several pairs in one size to find the perfect pair - not to mention the fact that their quality control can leave something to be desired – but it’s worth it in the end. Take no notice of people who insist that certain styles definitely run big or definitely run small; all that you can do, is order your own size and take it from there – everyone’s feet are different and sometimes the size which fits you can depend on the type of leather used.

Wow...these boots are everything that I hoped they would be! The leather is thick, dreamy and supple and the color (I purchased them in Gaucho) is so rich and beautiful. They fit true to size and are comfortable right out of the box. I didn't have any problems putting them on like some other reviewers, but I do have quite small, narrow feet. I know that Frye sizes can vary somewhat, but if this helps I own the Frye Harness 12r boots in a size 5.5 (they run approximately 1/2 size small) and I bought these in a size 6 (my normal size) and they fit perfectly. The shaft height on these boots is perfect too- just around 3-4 inches below my knees (I'm 5'8). The width of the shaft is wide enough to accommodate skinny jeans but they also look great with a skirt. Overall, the quality is EXCEPTIONAL- I highly recommend these!

I love these boots! They have unexpectedly great traction and have been great on the slippery, snowy sidewalks where I live. All this aside from being beautifully constructed and designed.Like others have mentioned, they are not easy to get on. I have an athletic build, though I really wouldn't consider myself bulky (wear size 4-6) but was concerned the top of boot around my calf was going to be too tight. I am happy to say that they have stretched a bit and softened up a bunch. I would recommend that if anyone else runs into the same issue that they try what I did which was stuffing the boots with either some form or towels to give them an extra stretch and to also wear them a lot. On a final note I bought another pair of Frye boots in 1996. They are in mint condition to this day.

These are the best shoes I have ever purchased! Even though they arrived at my doorstep 11 days after I ordered them (I guess not typical of Zappos), I had no trouble getting them on. As a soccer player I was afraid they wouldn't fit over my calves. They are snug, but completely comfortable and I can easily fit them over jeans. The gaucho color is beautiful. I'm 5'7 and they fall about 4-5 inches below my knee. They have great grip on snow and ice. Although I was initially hesitant to spend the money, they were definitely worth the purchase. You will not regret it! They are fantastic across the board!

Oh my gawd, I love my boots. I\'m not joking. They are totally awesome and plus if someone messes with me I can kick them, and it would surely hurt.

I love these boots even though they are still a bit hard to get on and off after wearing them many times over the last month. It is definitely getting easier though. I wear an 8 and ordered an 8 after reading the reviews. The length and width is perfect. My foot is medium width and my arches are average. The boot fits great once it is on but it is tight over the instep when you are putting your foot in and then loose in the instep when you have it on all the way. The instep straps work well to snug them up. I have been wearing medium weight socks. My calves are average size and I have plenty of room to tuck my skinny jeans in the boots. If you wear them under jeans or with a skirt, the leather is smooth and won't rub your calves raw. The leather is a little stiff around the ankles at first but breaks in nicely after about a week's worth of wearings. I would suggest wearing them for short periods when you won't be walking a lot for the first week or so to avoid blisters. I didn't get any blisters but I could tell that I might if I didn't break them in first. I get lots of compliments on them from both men and women. I got the Gaucho color and it goes with everything. I love the grippy soles for motorcycle riding. They are not bulky at all and have a feminine fit. This is a great looking comfortable boot that is made to last and is well worth the investment. You just need to have a little patience with them at first.

I obsessed over these online for months before deciding to buy, definitely worth it. I usually wear an 8 1/2, and ordered a 9, which was the right size. Very comfortable from the beginning even though the leather is very thick and stiff. My only complaint is that the right boot is too tight across the top, but I'm assuming that will go away in time. I have never gotten so many compliments from people on an article of clothing! Other girls love them, lots of looks and comments from guys, too. I love wearing them with leggings and miniskirts- hello rocker sexy!

I ordered both the 7 and the 7.5. I felt sure that the 7 would fit as I have a pair of campus boots in a size 7 that fit perfectly. The other reviewers were right on! The size 7.5 was a necessity as the 7s would have been boot hell. WAY too tiny across the instep. Pretty stiff leather and will require some breaking in, but otherwise, superb. After they are broken in, they will be quite comfortable, I am sure. Just the right amount of punk rock.

Go Everywhere/Look Good with Everything Boot - I love these boots. True to name and reputation, Fryes are well made and well worth the money. I did end up ordering a half-size larger in the Engineer style so that I could get my foot in comfortably. Even on the first full day of wearing, these boots were very comfortable. They even had traction in the snow due to their rugged soles. They look great with legging, tights, dresses, and skirts and can be dressed up or down. The dark brown is passable with black outfits. I highly recommend these as all-around great boots!

I love the look of these boots, but I when I received them I thought I was going to have to send them back as I couldn't get them on. Anyone with a height arch will have trouble with this as they are very stiff. But I managed to squeeze into them and have worn them a lot, and they are getting easier slowly.

Really Cool Boots - I just got these boots today, and I love them. I am a solid size 11, but I bought a size 10 and am very happy with the size. They were tough to get on the first time (but nothing major - it took maybe 2-3 minutes of pushing), but subsequent tries have proved easier and easier and they now slip right on. Once in the boots, my feet are really comfortable--there's room to wiggle my toes, and my heel slips a little (which I hear it is supposed to do). I have pretty large calf muscles, but these boots fit perfectly over my calves. These are my first Frye boots, and I was torn between these and the Campus style, but I'm glad I went with these. The buckles and rugged look make for a really cool style, and the color (I got gaucho) is perfect for everyday wear.

The Best - Buy them! I'm in love with these boots. Much nicer than the Veronica slouch style. Bought them in the gaucho color and they go with everything. Bought my regular size 9 and they fit fine. Had to give a bit of a push to get my foot in, but not at all a hassle, and expected with a boot like this. Go for the taller rather than the shorter style! You won't regret the choice.

Woohooooooooo! These are wonderful! I worked up a sweat getting these on the first time (they were snug across the top of the foot) and thought "these'll never work", but after just an hour or so of wearing them around the house, they had loosened up considerably. Comfortable, cool looking. I had gotten the "Veronica slouch", but sent them back and got these instead. For my feet, these were much more comfortable. I'm a hairstylist & on my feet 10 hours a day 3 times a week, and these are comfortable the whole day through! Zappos customer service was wonderful, as always!

In reference to Frye boots being difficult to put on at first and the "bag trick": the bag trick is applying a plastic grocery bag over ones sock before entering the boot to combat the overly suedey inside which ones sock will find friction with -- it's sweaty and gets some sideways looks for sure, when you have to remove said bagged foot in public. I found a better way, knee high smooth nylon trouser socks, the cheap kind that are like stockings, works great over my boot sock and allows for easy entry (with out sweaty plastic ghetto foot) and over time has conditioned the rough suedey inside of the boot to be a bit smoother -- also thin smart-wool socks work well. I have had the same pair of Fryes for the last 7 years, and I'm real hard on 'em too; I've only had to resole the heels once, and I added an arch support insole which makes them far nicer on the dogs for extended wear. I love them and will buy then again when these ones kick the big shoe bucket in sky.

I tried on many pairs of several different styles of Fryes both from Zappos and from a large department store, and had almost given up that I would find any that fit until these arrived. I had ordered a pair of size 8 Campus Fryes and they were enormous, easily a 9.5, so I returned them and went to the department store. There I tried on every pair in every style in every size from an 8 to 9.5 and discovered that every pair is different, you have to try each for yourself. My left foot is an 8.25 and my right foot is a 9, I have a high instep, perfectly average width, and no heel at all, so boots are very hard for me to find. These were perfect right out of the box. Others said they were too tight at the top of the calf; I didn't have this problem but I'm very skinny and tall, even with jeans or cords I have no problem. If you have large calves you might want to try the lower-cut Engineer instead of the 15" high ones. Heel is perfect. Looks great with jeans, leggings, everything. I m going to have these forever. And Zappos... Can't say enough good things! Thanks so much for your patience while I tried and returned, tried and returned, tried and returned! Zappos customer for life right here!

These are SO awesome! I have the shorter ones and wear them all the time. These are going to look awesome with so many things; skirts, jeans, dresses! They were a challenge to get on but all Frye boots start off that way and soon they slip on so easy. I'm a 10 and I bought a 10. I have several pairs of Frye boots and they are all awesome.

I've had these boots for 4 months now, and I am still crazy about them. I have a pair of Frye Campus boots, and find these to be much more comfortable. You do have do work for them a little. I never had blisters or anything, just get a bit of a sweat up getting your foot in the boot at first. But they are really worth it. Keep them guessing with a frilly skirt and these boots.

Amazing! I found the perfect boot. I have skinny calves, narrow feet and a saddle bone deformity and found a boot that fits. The buckle around the top adjusts out or in so that it fits around your calf. I'd say the fit is true to actual size. This is one good looking, seriously comfortable and incredibly well made boot. I'm thrilled! And...this is my 1st experience with Zappos...their return policy has totally won me over. It took me 2 tries and they were totally fine with my returns until I found the right boot and right fit.
