usually I wear a 40 in Birks, but for the Alabama, I am a 39 - The 40 was swimmingly large. I LOVE this shoe, and can't wait for warmer weather to wear all the time - Since there is no depth to the sole, it's too cold for the wintertime. I have a wide forefront and a wide toebox is crucial for me not to have pain - and few shoes fit the bill.

Great shoe if you love the sandal. I always wanted a closed toe shoe that had the base of a Birk sandal, and that is what this is. I weigh 230 pounds and have a very flat and wide foot. My perfect fit shoe is an Asics GT-2140 11 EEEE (the only shoe I run in). The 44 shoe fit me perfectly. If you love your Birk sandals with the great arch and metatarsal support, but don't wear the sandals because: 1. It is cold outside 2. Sandals look hippie with jeans, then these are the shoes for you. To recap: I have real flat feet. I loved my Birk sandals for the arch support, but wanted shoes. If you meet these conditions, you will love these shoes. I did. One week after I got the brown shoes I ordered the black ones. The price is a lot, but worth it to me.

Birkenstock Alabama - These are probably my favorite casual shoes - I have a pair in light brown suede and a newer pair in terracotta. Once you get used to the cork footbed, they're amazingly comfortable. My only complaint about these shoes is little metal lace doo-dads on the sides. These seem to have no real purpose. Still and all, a great shoe.

Most comfy shoe made!!! I've owned many Birks over the years... this one is one of my new favorites. Absolutely perfect Birkenstock comfort in a nice shoe that can be worn to work, school, pretty much anything short of formal. Perfect with jeans or slacks, the Alabama gives you more chances to enjoy Birky comfort when a clog or sandal is not appropriate. You will love them! Order your usual Birk/Euro size.

Familiar classic comfort - I keep coming back to Birks. I tried the Earth shoe, but returned them for these. I'm addicted to these old friends! Fit great and comfortable right from the start! Look great too!

Birkenstock Alabama - I ordered the Birkenstock Alabama shoes because I like how they look. It took me 3 weeks to break them in. I work 12 hours 3 and 4 days a week and my feet were killing me. Once I got them broken in, they are so comfortable. I love how they look, feel, and fit. I wear a size 8, but I ordered a size 38. They are nice and roomy. These are very expensive, but if your feet are killing you, you would end up spending that money and more to get your feet feeling good again at a doctor’s office. These shoes will last for years and I will not wear anything else at work. Thanks Zappos for good customer service.

Supportive casual shoe. Fits true to size but runs a little wide. Orthotics aren't necessary with this shoe.

Casual Friday Five Days a Week - I ordered these for my son to wear to his engineering internship this summer. He walks to work each day and has never complained once about his feet hurting. In fact, he is hoping mom will order a second pair in another color! He loves them!

Birkenstock Alabama - Sizing is one-half size larger than marked. Most comfortable shoe I've worn...this is my second pair in 5 years. The first one lasted that long. They take a few weeks to really break in but the leather is high quality and takes oil/wax well. These shoes grow on you.

Great casual shoe - I wanted a casual but decent pair of shoes for the office and for travel. I walk 20 minutes to/from my office each day and the shoes need to be dressy but also comfortable for walking. Tennis/running shoes would be OK for the trip, but are not suitable for the office, and I don't want to mess with two pairs of shoes. I had worn out a pair of Birks many years ago and was happy to try another pair. A big plus in these shoes is the cork footbed. But if you are new to this type of shoe recognize that it takes several weeks of "break in" before the shoes are fully comfortable. Once you are past that the shoes are great. Note that unless you have REALLY WIDE feet, you should order the narrow (regular width).

Zappos and Birkenstock #1 - The customer service and shipping by Zappos are fantastic. Received my order next day. These Birkenstocks are extremely comfortable and yes they run true to size. Love these shoes! The Alabama's have the same cork foot bed as the classic sandals and the same thick leather uppers, so if you've had those before you know the deal. The rubber on the bottom is different than the sandals, actually they seem more durable. For those of you who have never owned a Birk sandal before, the break in process is 1-2 weeks. Don't let the initial feel turn you off, they form to your feet gradually, more-so than any other shoe I've ever owned. As long as they fit ok then just wear them, and they will morph to the shape of your feet. Speaking of sizing, either order a size down from your recommended size on the chart, or order your recommended size in a narrow. For example, I am a 9.5 US mens, a 41 regular or a 42 narrow fits me perfectly. The build quality of these shoes is quite amazing and they hold up well. The price may seem steep, but consider that you will have them for probably 10+ years, and even then all aspects of the shoe can be repaired for a fraction of the price. In other words, they're worth it.

Just what my grandson wanted - My grandson wanted these very shoes and was very happy when they came so quickly and were perfect. Thank you for a very nice experience. We'll probably be ordering more as this pair wears out.

Unbelievable - Unbelievable shoe, unbelievable service. I ordered my first pair of these shoes on 2-12-08 they arrived the next day. I put them on they felt like they were made especially for my feet, I have arthritis and my job requires me to be on my feet for hours at a time, these are the first pair of shoes that actually feel better as the day goes on. After I received my first pair of Alabamas I went right to the computer and ordered another pair, those arrived today....Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Funky but not clunky. I've worn Birkinstocks for more than 25 years and even though I do not like closed toed shoes of any kind, these are the most incredibly comfortable Birks besides the Arizona's. They also fulfill my Peter Pan fantasy with their swashbuckling looks. Worth the price many times over.

Excellent Shoe - Meticulous build quality with a deep textured leather. This shoe is replacing two pairs of Clarks (made in China now). These shoes are made in Germany. The size 45 Narrow was a good fit for me. I am 6'3" and 170 lbs (thin) and the narrow is perfect. For comparison, let’s say that I am the type person that like Asics running shoe fit. I've always known that Size 45 can sometimes be up to a 1/2 size too large for me and I'd say the Alabama is a perfect 45. Some people commented on the toe bar and it is perfectly aligned to my foot. The only small mismatch is the small bar that runs between my big toe and second toe - my big toe rests on it a little. Overall, I would highly recommend this shoe. I little expensive but quite possibly worth every penny.

My feet love me now... These might be the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. I love them so much I bought a pair in each color. I even wear them around the house because they feel so good on my feet. And what's great is that they have the same cork footbed found in the sandals and slip-ons. Like others have said, order the narrow width which is equivalent to a US regular. Unless of course, you have super-wide feet.

Beautiful Birkenstocks - I love these shoes. I too many pairs of Birkenstocks to count and these have moved to the top of my favorites list. They're comfortable and stylish -- I have received many compliments on them.

Birkenstock Alabama - Narrow or Regular Width? Definitely order Narrow widths for any size. I ordered a 10 regular the first time around, but it felt like an 11. I then got the narrows in a 10 and they fit true to size. Of course, the bulky shape of the shoe will give more width than is usual, even with the narrows, but you quickly get used to it. A narrow width, in this case, is the German equivalent of a regular and a regular is the equivalent of a wide.

Well worth the money!! My husband loves these shoes because they are so comfortable. He has plantar fasciitis and these shoes have completely solved his heel pain problem. Since getting these shoes, he refuses to wear anything else.
