I used to own a shoe store and sold Mephistos. I have had both France production and Portugal manufactured and I personally have not found any great difference. The shoes I wear are the Match. I have 8 pair-7 black and one white. The white ones are 16 years old and the blacks are anywhere from 5 to 17 years. I find that when you buy quality shoes you can have them resoled and have the heel portion repaired with no impediment to the fit or comfort of the shoe. I am about due for new white ones. The economics of an expensive pair of shoes is 17 years divided into the cost is a couple tens per year. You can't even buy cheap runners for that price and have anywhere near the comfort,support or durability. A big reason is the leather and the breathabilty of the shoe. Thanks Peter J. Kill the LOGO's... This is an excellent shoe. Solid, comfortable, and reasonably light. I had a pair of Ecco's previously, which were light and very easy to walk in, but they never felt solid and they leaked.. However, the Mephisto does make you wear their logo. This is out of place on a $300 shoe. If you're into showing-off, perhaps you'll be happy. But... Reflect that those who really know, don't need the logo to tell.. And those who don't know aren't worth impressing... Mephisto... Lose the LOGO!

Comfort and Style... First things first: I own two pairs; one in brown and 1 in white; but that is about style (white for summer). The main issue with the Match is extreme comfort. These are about the most comfortable walking shoes made today. They are very well made, strong stable sole, and thick, strong leather. Treated, they can last a lifetime. Always use cedar tree shoes with Mephisto. The white can be kept clean with Mephisto white polish (which is a leather conditioner and keeps the leather supple and resistant to water), and normal cleaning. These are an expensive investment and worth cleaning when you are at the end of the day. With Mephistos resoling policy, if you wear them down to nothing, you basically get a new pair for about 1/2 the price (Mephistoresole.com). Mephisto shoes, therefore, are an investment in the health of your feet, as well as your legs, back, and neck. Some with chronic headaches find that a good pair of shoes takes care of that. Mephisto fit a bit large, but this is done by design, as most Americans wear shoes too tight. After a short time wearing Mephistos, you will understand that they should be a bit larger than what you are used to. Some slight imperfections can be expected. I wear no other brand.

I am female, high arches, moderate+ pronation, mild bunions, recently diagnosed with sesamoiditis/metatarsal pain. Also learned I need a wide shoe width now versus medium and need to find options that won’t create more problems. In the process of replacing most of my shoes. Was looking for something casual/comfortable that didn’t scream bulky running shoe, and maybe get away with wearing them with casual dress pants/maybe some skirts and dresses in addition to jeans and athletic pants. I ran across this Match shoe and was grateful for the many reviews, especially RE sizing. I wear 11.5-12 in most athletic shoes and ordered the men’s 9.5 and 10. Men’s medium width is usually equivalent to a women’s wide. I learned through reviews and Mephisto site that this shoe should not bind anywhere and actually feel somewhat loose in the heel and have extra room in front of toes. Had I not known I probably would have opted for the 9.5, which felt closer to my size but was actually too short in the arch length and would not have worked in the long run. The extra space cradles your foot similar to it being suspended. The engineering of the shoe and moderate arch support gives me balance and helps my gait. The lacing system tightens and releases evenly on your foot and does not bind anywhere; plus makes for easy on and off. The shoes accommodate my new orthotics which takes pressure off the forefoot problem. I understand why these shoes are more expensive. They have a cool look and while they may be limited to casual looks, they feel so healthy on my feet I know I will get a lot of mileage from them.

Years ago I broke both my feet. Subsequently, I needed orthotics. As a busy Mother and Grandmother, I needed secure footing. No longer could I wear high heels or flats or fancy shoes. So I looked for the very best black shoe with proper support that would go the distance for several years. I have worn the Mephisto Match for years (and years) without the slightest problem. I am continually looking down and saying, "Yup, these are my dancing shoes, my go to church shoes and my hiking shoes." They are perfect! I am 72 and I will be going strong for years to come in my Mephistos!

The toe space in this shoe is too narrow for me. The footbed is not near as comfortable as their sandals are (I have 3 pairs of those).

Not a match - I bought this shoe as a birthday gift for my boyfriend, who is on his feet 12 hours a day as an automotive technician. His feet are narrow with high arches. He felt the shoes needed a couple weeks to break in, he wears them but doesn't seem thrilled. I have bought these shoes for other people who just loved them. Zappos service and selection is the best!

These were immediately comfortable. I need a shoe that's tight across the top of my foot, so how they lace up is important, and the picture of the laces is what made me order these. I wanted a comfortable walking shoe that could also pass as a dress shoe, due to an upcoming trip that involves both sightseeing and a semi-formal wedding. These are more expensive than I'm normally comfortable with, but I am keeping them.

These shoes are comfortable and durable says my husband who suffers with tender feet and a highly developed sense of thrift. Mephisto shoes can be thoroughly refurbished with new soles, restitching, conditioning of the leather, and new insoles by the company to extend their wear for far less than a new pair. Surprisingly, however, the shoe laces broke after only four months on this newest pair of Mephisto Match style shoes. The manufacturer’s laces are usually long lasting and stay tied better than any replacements that can be found, so that was a disappointment.

Absolutely the most comfortable street shoe I have ever owned in my 66 years. I have 2 pair in continuous use for 5 years. Leather inside and out, breathable. Unlike synthetics, these shoes smell only like leather. On a visit to France, I tried 5 other Mephisto models: Match is the best! My only complaint: There is no reason for such a great shoe to sport a logo.

The best - Just bought new pair, after resoling one that I bought in 1994 -- finally the stitching is coming undone. That makes the shoe a bargain dollar-wise.

Best shoe I've ever owned - I bought my first pair of these shoes in 1987. I unpacked them, put them on, and went to Italy for 10 days. The shoes never left my feet (well, I didn't wear them in bed!) and I walked all over Florence and Milan. Great support, great fit, very comfortable walking shoes. I still have that pair--Mephisto has a great resoling service and these shoes have been resoled maybe 10 times. What can I say? I'm ready for another pair...

Very comfortable - This is a very comfortable shoe. It felt good right out the box, no need for breaking-in. My only criticism is that the ventilation in the shoe could be better. According to the shoe description, there's supposed to be some sort of air ventilation system as part of the design, but it does not feel that way to me.

Match...Great shoe! This is the best shoe I've worn to date. I ordered a size 10, my normal size, had to return due to being a little loose. Replacements, 9.5, were at my house the next day! Fantastic service and Zappo's paid for the shipping. I also price challeged, due to finding the shoe lower cost at another web site. Zappos did 110% price protection with no hassle. Will buy from Zappos as well as Mephisto's again. Did I already say great service? Well then, great company also. Thanks.

My favorite shoe ever! I had heard of Mephistos before but had never tried on a pair. They are simply amazing. I have worn them literally every day since they arrived via UPS a couple of weeks ago. They fit like a glove right out of the box. Since wearing them I've had a number of people stop me and ask what I thought of the brand and model -- they had been thinking about getting a pair. I not only gave them a thumbs up, but told them about Zappos. I think I will be buying Mephistos in the future when the time calls for shoes.

Disappointed in the Width and Weight. I've worn Mephisto's for many years and I will not question their quality. They're unparalleled. However, the new pair I got as replacements feel narrower; and they're much heavier than the previous version of this shoe. I'm hoping they will spread out more as I break them in. The previous pair needed no breaking in. The weight is also an issue. The previous pair are as light as air. These are heavy. I bought a half size larger on impulse, and if I had not, these wouldn't have fit me. Keep the width issue in mind when ordering. I'm going to look elsewhere for a lighter shoe in the future.

Mephisto is the most comfortable brand on the market if you can get passed the price and "old man" style of many of their shoes. They are however, radically inconsistent in sizing. I have a 12 that my tie touches the end and another 11.5 that feels like a clown shoe with a full 2 thumb length distance to the toe box. For reference I wear 12 in Blundstone and RM Williams and most other brands. I wouldn't buy this brand if I couldn't return for free. But if you do get a good fit, and you're ok with the style, your feet will be very happy.

My new Match shoes were slightly, but measurably small than my old pairs. 9 1/2 was too small so I swapped for a size 10. I assume that a 9 1/2 Wide would have been ok, but I did not see that option. Bottom line, the size 10 is fine. Including the summer whites, I am on my 5th pair of Match shoes. They are hands down, the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned. Price be damned.

Incredibly comfortable! Mephisto -- so expensive but, for me, worth it.

Mephisto shoes are always a consistent quality.

Fit well. These are not like walking on a cloud. They are springy and comfortable but not Hoka like. HOWEVER, at the end of the day, my very flat feet do not feel sore and destroyed. They are supportive and cushiony where they need to be. Mephisto knows what they are doing. Very well made too.

Mephisto is a very high quality shoe, Mephisto states this model is the best walking shoe AND I BELIEVE THEM.

I went through a lot of shoes to find this perfect fit. Extremely comfortable and looks great with my jeans.
