My research in the mountainous rainforest requires a shoe that easily adapts to a constantly changing terrain and environment which is sometimes treacherous and unforgiving. This shoe is the best I have ever had for rocks, dirt, mud, steep grades, ascent and descent, and water as well as climbing trees and rope when necessary. The grip is unrivaled by anything I have ever had. True to size, but a bit wide, and more comfortable with wear. Take a while to dry out if they they get wet, but worth it. I strongly recommend these for anyone who is serious about the outdoor exploring in rough terrain and will definately own another pair in the future!

If you need boots like this then these are awesome and you will be so glad you got them! I did The Narrows two day hike in Zion National Park and probably would have broke my ankle without them. They really hold your ankle and heel well. If you plan to wear neoprene socks with them, you may want to get half a size larger depending on your sock thickness.

Runs small. I wear an 8.5 and in these both my big toe and pinky toes rub. I walked 5 feet before they hurt. They went back to Zappos. Can't comment on how they would perform as I never used them.

Great shoe for tripping with a canoe. Need to wear at least a 3 mm neoprene sock for comfort from stitching etc., and a larger size to accommodate this sock. I would prefer to eliminate the silver trim.

I love 'em. My wife made me work on the side to get these bad boys, but now they are here! I will be hitting the canyons soon! Stealth rubber - it just sounds cool! Thanks Zappos.

These Five Tens are great for holding their ground in rocky and muddy places, even where the vegetation is wet. They have good ankle support. I recently used them both in a canyoning and caving setting. They grip the terrain and take your mind off of the placement of your feet so you can really enjoy the environment you are out there to see. My entire family has a pair and we wouldn't travel without taking them along.

Simply put, there are no other products that even compare to the Canyoneer from Five Ten. If you enjoy doing conyoneering, especially wet canyons then you really need a pair of these shoes. I have been an avid climber and Canyoneer for over thirty years, I have guided climbing and canyoneering in and around Moab Utah and I can say with authority that these are the best shoes for the job. Not only does Five Ten have the stickiest rubber for the all important friction and scrambling, but they have also worked out the critical issue of drainage and fit. With these shoes, your feet won\'t end up blistered and pruned at the end of a day of slot canyons, and you will be running circles around anyone without Stealth rubber.

My husband and I bought Canyoneers for a trip to Utah's National Parks. Neither of us is into technical climbing. However, we are still young enough to enjoy hiking, and old enough to be concerned about falls. The shoes were terrific. It was like being a gecko: our feet stayed anchored even at fairly steep angles. They were comfortable, too. We didn't have much time to break them in, and we didn't get the hint of a blister. Two notes: they run a bit small, and if you go wading, they will take a day or two to dry out.

These shoes are great for what I consider their design purpose - Ascending/Descending slick, water filled rock canyons. Places where a fall means serious injury or death potential. These are a combination of a cross training shoe with reasonable ankle support with gecko-like stick to the rock, in either wet or dry. If you are looking for a water bootie to wear in a kayak, these are not for you. But if you want to walk on granite as slick as glass, there is no better option out there. I too advise to wear a thin sock as some of seams can rub annoyingly. By the way, if you even look at the style category (or even worse the color), these are obviously not the shoes for you. Not to worry though, they look quite stylish when you're hucking off an 80' waterfall.
I'd also recommend:
Nothing better for their purpose, but anything w/ 5.10 rubber will do in a pinch

These boots were a birthday present for my husband and he loves them! They were comfortable out of the box with no break in period required. They have excellent traction and protect his feet and ankles from sharp rocks in or out of the water. His speed in negotiating Arizona's watery canyons has nearly doubled, so I guess I better get myself a pair, too, if I want to keep up with him!

These shoes rocked!!! I wore these shoes on two occasions. Both times were at Zion National Park. The 1st time, it was during a regular hike. It was a 7.5 mile (dry) hike. The shoes were awesome then. Great grip on rocks and comfortable too. The weather wasn't hot so absorbing heat wasn't an issue. The 2nd time was a 16 mile hike through the narrows. A majority of this hike was through water which had numerous slippery rocks. These shoes had excellent grip even on those rocks. And the comfort was surprisingly good when it was wet, although I wore wet socks which I think added some more cushion. Overall, excellent shoes!!!!!!

I bought these for a trip doing slot canyons in Utah in and around Zion. I wore them with a 5mm neoprene socks which many guides recommend. Bit weird looking (seriously. yellow?). I was skeptical about the shoe. They also run small. I am 12 1/2 and wore a 14 (with the neoprene sock). Our 1st canyon was 19 miles long. Some puddles, some waist deep mud, some large and small boulders and some sandy desert. The shoe performed well in all conditions. My feet were hot during the desert phase but it was over a hundred degrees. We also used these to repel off rock walls, into and out of water and waterfalls and they worked great for that as well. I couldn't think of another shoe that would have done all the above as well. Overall very happy with them... and after miles of Utah clay they are no longer yellow.

Being new to canyoneering, I was advised to buy this boot for an AZ trip. Wearing a wet suit w/ neoprene socks, I ordered a size larger. Hiking, some climbing and transitioning between wet and dry conditions I commented to others, most of whom were the same shoe, that I'd never owned a boot so versatile. Rappelling down waterfalls gave remarkable traction and stability. Straps offered good fit throughout and they dried easily - in the desert.

Get the right size - I just returned from 10 days of photography in the desert of southern Utah. The Canyoneer II is an excellent boot for any kind of rock, even sandstone (which is where I used them). I spent 10 days photographing various stoney landscapes with the Canyoneers. They were always sticky, comfortable, and warm. The shoes are true-to-size if you are wearing regular socks. However, if you plan to use neoprene socks, buy one size up for 2-4mm neoprene, and 1 1/2 sizes for 5-7mm neoprene. A company that rents these out near Zion Natioinal Park recommends 1 to 1 1/2 sizes larger than normal as well. You might consider a size larger if you are going to use any type of thick sock. Purchasing 1 1/2 sizes larger not only fit the neoprene perfectly, it also avoided any painful mashing of my toes in front. A bonus - the neoprene socks kept the toes surprisingly warm - even while hiking around in a foot of snow. The only drawback I found was that the straps are a bit stiff, especially when cold. They seem to be working-in a bit as time passes. If you think you want this shoe, then get it! You won't be disappointed. After my Utah trip, I will be using my Canyoneers in more places than just rocks. They allowed me to not worry about my footing while carrying two pro DSLRs, a tripod and other gear.

Absolutely will order from ZAPPOS again. Ordered one day and received them the very next day. I bought these in black and chocolate and love them. I might order them in oatmeal. Highly recommend these shoes.

Great shoes. Grip well. Just trying to get used to the rub around higher ankle, other than that, they are great.

Great Boot for River Hiking in the Smoky Mountains - I have used these boots in the rivers of the Great Smoky Mountains and love them. No pain when slick river rocks meet the ankle bone or when toes get wedged in rocks. This is a great boot for "river hiking". I appreciate the extra ankle protection! The sticky soles do well on very slick river rock.

The shoe is wide, but that is not the problem. For my usual shoe size, it is slightly short for sports activities. My big toe contacts the toe box. The next size up, 0.5 cm larger, is fine in the length, but the shoe is then too wide. I am on the tightest buckle from the outset.

You can look and research forever and ask the experts but you will never find one boot that everyone agrees is "the best." For my son and me these were the best we've worn and seen over the course of 4 different rigorous back country trips in Canada and the BWCAW. We wore thin or no socks. Both of us did have either orthotics or SuperFeet (blue) liners on top of the regular liners. If you wanted to wear neoprene booties you'd have to size up a bit. We both have narrow feet (size 12.5 and size 14) and would have ordered a narrower shoe if available. However, these shoes were absolutely outstanding at gripping wet rocks, wet sandy rocks, and even wet slimy rocks. The tall sides and neoprene collar kept most annoying debris from entering over the course of the day. We may have had to stop and empty them only 2-3 times over 5 days of numerous, lengthy, sometimes shin-deep mucky, and sometimes cross country bushwhacking portages. The toes are durable enough to deal with sticks, rocks, and canoe parts that challenged them. I usually paddled kneeling because of a back issue. That same issue caused me to lose some sensitivity and strength in one leg and the few times I slipped or twisted my ankle as a result, there was enough support in the boot to prevent injury. To quickly drain the most water out while standing, you'll want to bend your leg and bring your heel toward your buttocks because the only drainage is a durable but small wire mesh screen on the instep of each boot. The only other mesh is the durable yellow synthetic color you see in the picture. I had no problems with the buckles/straps but would be worried if one broke off because you'd either lose a great deal of support and/or risk the boot coming off in a muck-sucking situation. Straps are stiff plastic/rubber mix and would be cumbersome in cold weather but I wouldn't want to wear these then unless I had neoprene booties on to keep feet warm as they would be getting wet. I'd give this 5 stars if the drainage were a bit better and the straps were more flexible. I don't know of any boot that would rate a '5' over a wide range of conditions as we are used to tackling.

I needed a water shoe that would protect my toes more than a standard neoprene bootie, having broken my big toe windsurfing. The Canyoneer 2 seemed like a good shoe, fit a tad large, but did not offer as much over the toe protection as the Keen Hood River.

These are my second pair of Canyoneer shoes. The first pair served me well! The second pair is built strong, but I managed to break the rubber piece that holds the buckle on my first trip out. There is a lot of taking off and putting on when Canyoneering in the the wilderness of south eastern Utah. Other than that, the shoes fit great! I bought them online, too, so that is a plus.

Boots are good except for the cushioning. I would suggest buying an insert for them. I just hiked the Narrows river in Zion National Park and I could feel the rocks that I was stepping on. Other than the padding the shoe comes with I think they are awesome for water hikes.

Review of Five Ten Canyoneer 2 - Do what they're supposed to do: allow wading in creeks and rivers, entry to or exit from kayaks and canoes without slipping. Pretty edgy styling and color--something a bit stealthier would be good.

Five Ten's Canyoneer 2 serves its purpose with excellent traction in all conditions, & excellent drainage properties. Weaknesses include: gravel enters into the shoe easier than expected; the strap hold downs will fail and the straps will occasionally get caught up in your rope; soft rubber on the outside of the foot can dry out & split if not properly cared for & components on the uppers have started to delaminate after 2 years of canyons. With all this said, this is still the best option available for Canyoneers.

Looked nice this web site, but once I received them, they were clunky and did not fit well. They are also NOT true to size. They are a half size too small. I am a size 15, but it felt like I needed a 15 and 1/2 to 16. It\'s too bad.
