The boot is pretty much what I expected...I realized it would be more style than comfort and that's what it is. Looks good with jeans, but don't buy it if you're looking to walk a lot in these. This was my first purchase from Zappos and I can't say enough about their service, people and follow-up...so refreshing to have a business give you exactly what they promise. If you haven't shopped Zappos before you're in for a treat. I'll be back.

Half size too small -
ordered me a pair and was really expecting it to fit a half size to big because of the previous reviews, to my surprise it was more like a half size to small and very narrow. Now on the upside of the boot, the leather is high grade top notch and the innersole was so soft and comfortable. I decided to return these and go with the Chippewa boots instead.

I've tried 4 times now, and aside from the first pair being a little too small, these things have been defective every time. Badly scuffed toe, severely rumpled leather (up the back), and most recently a deep cut in the side of one of the boots. I don't know who's in charge of quality assurance, but they need to get them some help, or some glasses.
I love the style of the boot, it would just be nice if I could get a pair that isn't damaged by the manufacturer.

This is hopefully my go-to boot for next winter. I wanted something well made and is not a fashion boot - and wasn't ready to go back to the Doc Martens of my past. I didn't buy these from Zappos even though I love Zappos because I wanted to try on too many different styles and heights and I've never had Fryes. I ended up getting these even though I thought I wanted the 8Rs because the slightly longer height makes them a better bet for dresses & pants. I have worn them maybe a dozen times, and didn't find them great to wear out of the box. That might vary depending on the finish - I bought the basic oiled leather black ones, not distressed at all. The quality is very high, and I think these will last quite a while. As far as sizing, I am a 7.5/8 closer to 8. The store manager told me that I should stick to the smaller size because of stretching but I hated touching my big toe in the front of the boot. My SA told me she wore the same size as me and has several pairs and prefers the bigger end even though they both fit. So I did, but even so, I had a very hard time pulling the boot physically on my foot - they pulled out two pairs of the same style/size and the right foot wouldn't go in at the instep. The 3rd pair was the charm, and they kindly let me keep a pair created out of the three pairs that fit both feet. So I bought them there - it's the same price at Zappos and these never go on sale. By the way, the instep was so tight as to actually cause me pain the first 2 times I wore them out - no blister but sort of a bruise...they have since softened up some, but need some ways to go. The arch support is moderate, and the shoe is a heavy one, but these have also replaced my Hunter boots for rain! I live in NYC, not a bog or the farm, so complete 100% waterproof all weather isn't a priority. These are so far just as good as long as I'm not stepping deep into a puddle.

Absolutely great boots. Originally ordered them in brown by mistake and a half size too big, but that was no problem because Zappos sent me a pair in black and the right size within 24 hours. And paid for all shipping costs! Very comfortable boot and Made In The USA! Highly recommend.

Great classic looks and nicely tanned leather, but disappointed with comfort. The sole is too flexible such that there is no support in the middle of the foot. The foot is essentially acting as a bridge from the raised heel to the ball of the foot with a thin rubber sole in the middle that flexes. There is also a small stitching defect on the sole that, while functionally not a problem, is something that should have been caught in QC of a boot at this price. I also learned subsequent to purchasing this pair of boots that Frye is no longer an American-owned company. I try to buy American whenever possible.

Beautiful boots. Love the gaucho leather color. True to the size. Very comfortable and very well made. I know they will last me for years to come.

These boots look exactly like the picture and have a flawless fit (as relates to the construction of the boot) and finish. I bought these boots more for fashion than hard use, so I'm certain durability will not be an issue. I have other Frye boots that I wear to work and they have held up very well. I bought size 9 1/2 which fit well. I buy size 9 in Converse Chuck '70's and 10 1/2 in New Balance and adidas running shoes for comparison. When the boots arrived, I was wearing thick socks and could barely get my heel into the top of shaft, but with a plastic grocery bag over my foot (sock and all), the boots slid on effortlessly and were extremely comfortable. I would buy this boot again, but I won't have to, it will outlive me. I have rated the value as average, because I believe the full retail price is a fair price for the boot.

I owned a pair of this engineer boots, but the 7 or 8 inch shaft, which unfortunately Frye doesn't make anymore. They were my constant companions for ten years. By mistake, they were donated to Good Will. After a week I ran to the store to buy my boots back, but they were gone. I regret donating them, and I hope whoever has them enjoys them as much as I did. I'd put a lot of miles on them, and had replace the heels before giving them away. If and when Frye brings back the 7 or 8 inch high shaft, I am getting another pair. In the meantime, I am wearing Frye drivers and Chelsea boots. But I miss my engineer boots.
I'd also recommend:
Red Wing, Chippewa, Allen Edmonds, Blondo, Adidas.

I wear a size 11 M and the Engineer 12R is slightly longer, not bad enough to go a half size smaller though. I had purchased a used pair like new that were in great shape and figured I'd buy myself an additional brand new pair as well. I love this boot, so comfortable! I went on a vacation to Ohio and did plenty of walking and shopping, my feet never bothered me at all. Nostalgia of wearing this style of boot when I was young is what got me interested and boy am I glad I rediscovered them!

I always wanted a pair of engineer boots, but i have a wierd foot thing. Long narrow and one bigger than the other. Skinny legs too, so big boots on toothpicks, lol! I saw a pair on ebay for a price i couldn't resist. The pair i got were 11.5 and i wear a 12, but reviews i read said they run big. They do not! I tried to wear them but the toes just barley touched on the big foot. I couldn't stand that i had these beautiful boots and they didn't fit! So i did what i should have done in the first place....order a new pair, in my size, from Zappo's. The return policy would have saved me money as i couldnt return on ebay. The new boots in my size are beautiful in style and construction and even though i spent half again the retail price, I'm still happy. Guess i will sell the others on ebay so some other person can enjoy them. From now on I'm buying from Zappo's.

I’ve been a fan of engineer boots since the 80s. I got, what I thought was a great deal at the time, a pair of US made Carolina engineers at a military surplus shop. They were very well made, super tough but the stitching that links the shaft with the front of the boot was so rough and pronounced on the inside and it was made slightly tight, so much that I couldn’t wear them for more than an hour before my bony feet started hurting right at that spot. I tried for years to stretch, soften and even shave some material inside, wore the hell out of them, even withstanding the pain for days. I just gave up, threw them away and decided to go to my trusty Frye product line for a replacement. As always, these were comfortable right out of the box, it’s just as tough and true to that Carolina design I loved and it’s fixed ALL of the (literal) pain points I had with my previous boots. Highly recommended.

These were a gift. Boots arrived in an incorrect box and we discovered a couple of pieces of chewing gum (still in the foil) inside the tissue paper. Boot soles look new but leather is obviously damaged or distressed and doesn’t even come close to the picture. Bonus the heel has a lovely medium brown insert. Inside has 150 anniversary label which after a look online shows these are from a couple of years ago.

These boots were cool enough for the Fonz and I feel just as cool in them! I bought them for riding my motorcycle and my buddies loved them too. They are true to size and comfortable. I might even wear them out on date night.

This has been a "to do" purchase ever since I saw Judd Nelson rocking them as John Bender in the iconic movie The Breakfast Club. I was a bit hesitant to buy a boot by mail order; but lucky me, Frye boots run true to size and me and my feet are quite happy with this purchase. The leather is top quality as are the metal fittings.

The original biker boot, it fits great, looks even better. Perfect fit right out of the box. No break-in required. I am sure it will look even better with a few miles on them. Keep making them in the USA, and I will keep buying.
