I felt these were true to size in both length and width. My biggest surprise was that they didn't take very long to break in. After reading about the stiffness of the leather, I thought it would take two weeks to a month to break them in but, in fact, it took wearing them just 15 minutes a day without socks to get them up to speed. I wore them a whole day, after the short break-in period, without any problems. They have a look that makes certain jeans look very cool and hip and I'm sure with some kinds of skirts and dresses too. I think the softer they get the more I will pair them with things I haven't yet thought about. Happy about this purchase. For the record, I am almost 70 years old and these still hold their appeal. I wore them a long time ago and have returned to them because they have that feeling of youth and rebelliousness. To hell with age appropriate!

The Black Nappa 1460W is the perfect Doc! The 1460 is too wide and these will be perfect once broken in. This is my second pair of Nappa docs, and they break in much faster than the smooth leather and are more comfy straight out of the box. The seam attaching the tongue pushes on the upper foot until broken in, but it will get looser and they will mold to your foot like all good leather. I'm usually a size 10.5-11 in boots, but the UK 8 is perfect. I also own the 1460 Nappa and the UK 8 in that style is longer and wider than these. I feel these are much more "shaped" for a woman's foot than the 1460. Definitely size down if you're between sizes, and they will stretch and mold to fit your foot with a little wear. I think someone with a wide foot should opt for the original 1460 because these are average width. My feet were swimming in the 1460, and they gave me more of a clown feet vibe. These are very attractive, slimmer cut for a female or narrow male foot, and the leather is sumptuous. If you're a female with an average width foot and can't decide which docs to buy, go with these! They look great with shorts, jeans, leggings and dresses, these boots are pure biker/rocker chick and bad to the bone. :)

So I am 51 and never had a pair of Doc Martens before this. I bought a bunch of long dresses for winter and wanted some boots to wear with them. To address some of the negative reviews, the leather does not feel fake or look plastic-y to me. I bought the black cherry color, and they are BEAUTIFUL. I bought a size 9 women (41 euro), while I normally wear 8 1/2 in most shoes. These are definitely too long and kind of wide on me. My foot is exactly 10 inches long. However, these don’t run in half sizes so I decided to keep them instead of returning them and exchanging for the smaller size, which may or not fit me. I read a whole bunch of these reviews, and they were all over the place as far as which size to order, so I took a gamble and bought a larger size. I ended up being glad I did size up because I can tie the laces to make them feel truer to size. When I lace them up all the way tight, my heel doesn’t lift and it doesn’t really bother me that there is extra room in the toe. I would rather that than have the toe rub on the front of the shoe, as some reviewers have noted. These are comfortable and the sole has a nice give and kind of bouncy feel to the rubber. Mine were made in Thailand; it’s interesting to note some people have said theirs were made in Vietnam or China. I kept them rather than return them and risk getting a leather I didn’t like or something rubbing me the wrong way. I don’t have any pain where the tongue meets the shoe as some have noted. I wear fairly thick socks with these. You almost have to wear a sock that extends above the boot so you don’t have rubbing on the back of your calf from the boot. Overall, I am a satisfied customer and plan to wear these for many years.

Beautiful Purple color boot and took awhile breaking them in. I bought for my teenage daughter and this is the color she desperately wanted. About a month or so after she broke them in (which took some bandaids to ease the blisters), the purple leather started wearing off in patches. It's worn off down to the first layer. I wanted to return them but since it took her a couple of months to break them in, she didn't want to go through that again with another pair. Very disappointed to see more and more spots wearing away on these boots. I've owned a lot of Docs, and this has never happened! This is a pair made in Thailand, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

I was hesitant to buy another pair of Docs, having had several pairs in college, all of which hurt like crazy during the month-long break-in period. But, after I wore through the sole of my Skechers boots this summer, I needed something, so I decided to take a chance on these. I haven't regretted it. There's been basically no break-in period with these boots. I wore them for a couple of hours each day the first two days I had them, and my feet were comfortable each time (I also threw some heel cushions in, but I do this with most of my boots). So I decided to try them for a full work day, and they were great -- I found them very comfortable to walk in. I've had them now for nearly a month, and wearing them nearly every day I've had no problem with blisters or other pain. I will say that there's only minimal cushioning in the foot-bed, so I'm looking around for a good pair of insoles for these to make them a bit more comfortable on long days. But overall I'm really happy with these boots.

These boots are awesome. The cherry finish underneath the black begins to peep through the more you wear these boots. I wore them all over Europe for three weeks and they were the only footwear I took. Worked great, and I got many compliments. I'm a 60yo female fwiw.

I received these shoes today and sadly they felt a size to big. They also made my feet look huge. I wear a size 8, so I ordered a size 6. I remember back in the day, I wore a 5 but went with the recommended size in case things changed since the late 80's early 90's. I love the shoes. They are comfortable, light and very nice overall. I am returning them due to the size and I am so sad to find that I can't find a size 5 in any of the black boots. I was so tempted to keep them anyway because of the comfort, but I know I need to go smaller. So I have opted for the Black Nappa Mary Jane's. I truly hope those fit better because these are such nice shoes! Although I am bummed, I simply love Zappos for their easy and convenient return policy. I received these next day. I've never ordered from anywhere but Zappos and received the item the very next afternoon! You guys are awesome!

My Dr. Martens Odyssey To set this up, I fall right between a 9.5 and a 10 in many shoe and boot brands. I take the 10 maybe 60% of the time and the 9.5 40% of the time. Also, like many others, I had a pair of made-in-England smooth black leather Dr. Martens that I wore to death from about 1992 until about 1999. I think they were a US Women’s 10, but I can’t remember. Don’t know why I got it in my head to get a new pair of Docs but I did, and this is my story. 1. Read lots of reviews everywhere and ordered the “Pascal” model from Amazon in the purple with a gold metallic design, women’s US 9. They were too big. I didn’t look to see where they were made before I returned them. 2. Ordered Dr. Martens 1460 W in cherry red Arcadia from Zappos in US Women’s 9. They fit okay in the foot bed but they looked really wide. This pair was made in THAILAND. I returned them. 3. Ordered the 1460 W in black patent Lamper from another website across the pond. They were not made in England, however, but CHINA. (I didn't think they'd be made in England; they just happened to be a little less expensive.) 4. After I received the ones made in China from the other retailer, I ordered the same pair from Zappos. Same size, same color, same everything. This pair was made in VIETNAM. (I wanted to see if the Zappos pair would be less squeaky than the pair from the other retailer/made in China.) The variety of countries that Dr. Martens manufactures their shoes in is what I think makes the sizes and the experiences with these boots vary so wildly. Even within Zappos own stock for the same pair of boots they have ones made in Thailand and others made in Vietnam. The difference in size between the China pair and the Vietnam pair was significant, even though they were both marked as US women’s 9s in the same style. I compared the two pairs very closely and they looked the same. The pair from Vietnam was about a quarter size smaller than the pair from China, however, and they smelled noticeably chemical-ly/plastic-y. The pair from China though, as I mentioned, was much squeakier. Well, I ended up keeping the pair made in China. I took out the Dr. Martens insoles and inserted a pair of women's Dr. Scholl’s massaging gel insoles. This made them the perfect fit. I also sprayed the insides (mostly in the toe area) with a little dry shampoo; between that and the insoles it cut down on the squeaking A LOT. Additionally I've ordered a canister of Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam because that’s supposed to help with the squeaking as well as condition and soften the boots. So far I've just worn them around the house trying to break them in so I can't yet speak to that experience or general comfort. They're definitely not the Dr. Martens they used to be but that's the way of the world these days. As a final touch I switched out the standard laces for wide black satin laces. So cute! The End. (Hope this helps somebody!)

Just got them and love them already! Used them to walk the dog to break them in. Well, they don’t need it, they’re soft and comfy already! Great rocker style, they look hot with shorts. Need more! BTW, I’m 60 years young and live the boots!

Awesome boot. Flashy without it being in-yo-face. I think they run slightly large, but if you wear 1/2 sizes, probably best to order up. (I wear an 8.5, ordered a US 9 womens, and have wiggle room, but not enough to order down.)

I've worn Docs since the early 90s, and I agree with others that the quality is not what it used to be - and quality control is even worse. I used to be able to order a UK5/US7 in any style, and knew it would fit, and knew the shoe would be made correctly. Now there are issues like: sometimes a UK5 is huge and I need to reorder a UK4. (there is no way I'm a US6). Sometimes it fits great, and you order a second color in the same style, yet the second color fits too big/small. Sometimes the shoes have a flaw - stitching errors or hard lumps in the footbed. None of this used to happen. But all that said, if you manage to find a good pair, they are still better than many shoes out there today. It just takes a lot more effort than it used to. In terms of sizing, start with your normal size for anything Women's or Pascal. Go down a size for anything unisex.

I've never owned a pair of Doc's before this pair. Ordered the red flowery ones, size1460W, for me and the black 1460s for my daughter. We both wear a US size 9. We were able to compare the difference in the sizing between the two pairs: the 1460Ws fit us both very well, and the 1460s are a bit longer and wider. Great service from Zappo's, and I think the red flowery boots are so cute! On Day 2 of wearing them, they're starting to feel really cozy on my feet and warm, too!

I’ve had a pair of these for years and they’ve always been reliable. They got me through college, some long periods of backpacking and now professional life (I spend a lot of time outside on my feet). What I love about them is that they are a great all-around pair of shoes; they’re comfortable, durable, waterproof, and have good traction, and look much better with jeans or pants than sneakers would. Every time I tell myself that it’s time to get rid of them (because I’ve worn the soles almost through), I realize that I can’t find a single pair of shoes that does all of the above. They’re staying in my closet until I buy a new pair. While it’s true that they’re not much in the realm of arch support, I threw a pair of insole inserts into them and they’ve been comfortable for hours on end. Don’t forget to budget some time for breaking them in before you go out for the day, too - the stiff leather just needs some wear to get comfortable. I’m a US 9.5 and wear a UK 7 in these, which gives me room for warm socks.

I'm 44 yrs. old and I've been wearing Docs since I was 16 yrs. old. Unless you had Docs from back in the day, you probably can't understand how much the quality has gone down. I bought this pair of Docs, these Black Nappa 1460W, 4 years ago this month. I just noticed this week that the sole on my left boot is splitting apart. I have owned at least 15 pairs of Docs over the years spanning many different styles (most of which are in storage boxes for when my child reaches her teen years and might like to wear them) and I have NEVER had a sole split on any pair in any way shape or form. I'm SO disappointed. My original pair of Docs is 28 yrs old and the sole is not splitting. If you want these boots for only a few years, then these are great boots. They are comfy and awesome. But if you think you are buying a pair of Docs that you will have for 25 years, then go to find a pair of New Rock Boots instead. They are made in Spain and have superior quality (and yes, very worth the price!)

I’ve been wanting a pair of the 1460 Dr. Martens for a while and I finally decided on the 1460 W in Black Nappa leather. I’ve had a few pairs of the canvas Dr. Martens boots but these were my first classic leather pair. I immediately fell in love as soon as I pulled them out of the box (kudos for Zappos for super fast shipping!). I did take me a minute to get used to them since the sole is a lot thicker and larger than I’m used to, but that’s why I bought them. I find they’re pretty true to size. I usually wear a 7.5/8 and I ordered the 8 (UK 6) since there are no half sizes. They aren’t loose but have enough room for thick boot socks. And they will take time to break it. They were tight around the top of my foot where the laces begin and I got a blister on my heel. But three weeks in (wearing for an hour or few a day) and they are perfect. The leather is soft and they’ve formed to my foot. I will still need insoles for my plantar fasciitis in one foot but super comfortable other than that. Definitely worth the money. I’ve only had them a few weeks but it’s a quality boot and I can see them lasting for years and I wear boots daily.

I absolutely love these boots! I usually wear a 7 and ordered 7’s. Fits perfectly. They’re very stiff but after the 2nd day wearing them out they’re starting to loosen up and break in nicely. I can’t wait until they’re really comfortable. People stare at them when I’m out in public, I assume it’s because they’re so awesome!!

I've been wanting Docs for years, but thought that with my high arches and narrow feet I couldn't wear them. After reading reviews that the 1460w was better suited for a woman's foot, I ordered the purple 1460w. After three days of wearing an hour each day, they were completely broken in! I added some Dr Scholl tricomfort inserts which provide superb arch and heel support. Love! Now I need the black nappa and cherry red!

Zappos is the best! I accidentally bought the unisex black smooth 1460 boot first. When they arrived, I was absolutely heartbroken seeing them and trying them on. They were huge. The toebox was too big, the width was to wide, and the boot overall just looked like a rough, men's boot. I looked like a clown. Devastated, I immediately called Zappos. The woman I got on the phone was an absolute angel! At first, I was going to just return them and order them off the Doc Martens website. However, she walked me through the site until I found these babies. (I originally thought the W stood for "wide" and not "women's") and they are beautiful. She even upgraded me to nest day shipping for free which is great because I was going to wear them to a concert the next day! I'm literally in between US size 9.5 and 10. So I went with the UK 8 and it seems great! I have some room to move around but I just wear some medium thickness socks with them and they're perfect. The nappa leather is much easier to break in so your feet don't have to get so beaten up the first few days. I highly recommend these boots and this awesome site with they're amazing customer service. Zappos rocks!

These fit right to size. The leather is very thin, so they would not be a warm winter boot. They are not lined, just leather, so my socks stick which is a bit weird. But, they feel great, very very comfortable, I love them.

First of all, there's nothing red - cherry or otherwise - about the misnamed Cherry Red Acadia. Make no mistake: they're brown. But that's in absolutely no way the greatest offense of these boots. They basically feel like plastic - I mean, I took them out and as soon as my hand made contact with the first boot I thought, is this some kind of joke? For $140, these boots are outrageously overpriced. The feel and look like something you'd pick up at Payless for a good $100 LESS. The only redeeming "quality" is that the soles are rugged and sturdy; without that, the boots would basically be light as air. If you've never bought Dr. Martens - or Docs - before, then maybe you'll enjoy these. But as someone who grew up in the 90s and broke in a pair proudly purchased on Carnaby Street in London, these are laughably poor imitations of what Docs used to be like. The pair I had was nearly indestructible; the boots I unpacked today already had scratches on them even though they're brand new, and the tongue was almost paper-thin. All and all, I'm completely dismayed at the poor quality of what Dr. Martens apparently now makes and sells - a far cry from the boots we all loved and wore to within an inch of their lives in past decades. Needless to say, these are going back.

I just got these in the mail and love them! They do need to be broken in and get that great worn look, but other than that I am happy. One of the things I was worried about when I ordered them was that they would look big and bulky. But they really don't. It's actually rather narrow. Maybe from the side it is a big bigger but looking down at them, they are super slim. The Floral etched in adds a cool girlie factor, which I really like. I am hoping to order the full on floral printed ones for Christmas. And I will probably try a size 9. I had to order a 10 in these, because that was all that was left--and I wear 10 in boots usually. They are only a tiny bit big, but will fit great with socks.
