Teenage companion.
Living in Lagos, Nigeria in 1971, these were the only real quality shoes you could buy. The only other brand was Bata. I thought they were the ugliest, but had a lot of teen "firsts" while wearing them. They held up extremly well in the tropical heat and downpours of equatorial Africa. My dad and brother wore them too. Our "dessies" felt right at home when we were in Kenya's Tsavo game park sneaking through the red dust and acquiring its color while trying to photograph rhino. Their last encore was dinner at the swank Dorchester Hotel in London where strangers of equally swank pedigrees complimented us on how well one of their national icons fared in a posh setting. Years later, in 2001 I renewed my bond with them and still attest to their comfort and classic styling and compliments received even though my safaris are limited to the hot and dusty streets of urban America. Cheerio!

I love these boots. I get many compliments on them and they go with everything. Only thing is...I wear a 10 in Nikes. At least a 9.5, if not a 9, are the only way to go. Definitely size down.

Cute but not so comfy. I purchased these for my hubby for Christmas. He wore them a couple of times with very heavy socks, but the backs still cut into the backs of his legs and made him bleed. He has since glued "foam" into the backs of the shoes, but they still hurt him. I think I may have wasted a few bucks on this pair of shoes!

This is my fourth pair of Clarks and I have never been disappointed. The look and comfort are well worth the price. Clarks run big and stretch out, so consider ordering a full size down. I am 11.5 to 12 in almost every other brand, but I wear a 10.5 in the Desert Boot and Wallabee. Zappos was, as always, amazing.

Be prepared to "break these in". The leather is stiff around the ankle to begin with and so you need to wear thick socks or leg warmers to protect your skin. However, once broken in, they are very comfortable. I have plantar fascia in my left heel, and usually I am very careful to get a good arch support. While this has none, the crepe rubber sole's shock absorbing ability makes this a comfortable shoe. If you need the arch support, get an insert. The main thing is these look great and the leather will age to be as soft as butter. I really love them. I had to order a half size up because the toe was rather narrow to wear with socks.

Great shoe. I get compliments all the time. My shoelace snapped after about half a year but no problem, I just tied the two pieces together. Only real complaint is the shoebed. Be warned. There is little to no arch support, so if you have a decent arch in your foot, you will experience foot-ache and fatigue if you are standing in these shoes for an hour or more. I'm not sure how this applies to people who have flat feet or are used to flat shoes. I had to go out and buy footbeds for these shoes, and I use Superfeet. The shoes are rugged. I don't brush the suede or clean them, and my jeans rub their color on them, but that's the whole point of why I bought them. Low-main rugged boot. The glue around the edges of the leather and sole came off a little in areas, but the stitching is legit and holding. No real problems. The shoe is slippery on wet slick floors so be careful.

These are great boots, very comfortable, sturdy feeling, and not too heavy. They look great and the leather upper is of high quality. The natural rubber sole provides a lot of shock absorption. My main complaint is that the size was way off. My experience is that these boots are two sizes larger than what I normally wear. So, I wear a 10.5 but I had to get a pair that are 8.5 -- kind of lame. Other than this, pretty sweet.

Love these boots. They feel great. I get compliments about them all over the place.
The one downside is that if you wear cotten socks with them, they start to smell bad. Odor eaters are recommended.

Awesome boots overall! Perfect quality, function, comfort, and style. honest, a really solid buy regardless of your motivations. Got these to replace a suede pair of another brand, that's lifespan was brief. These are superior, materials, quality, etc. my dad saw them and thought they were his from the 60's. Timeless! Buy them now! My advice only, get them in leather, and in dark colors.

Best shoes for long distance driving I have ever owned. Recommend you read Peter H. Capsticks books on wearing them during African Safaris, and Rommels troops using them in the Africa Corps. As Damon Runyon wrote, "a story goes with them."

Great shoes, but they do run a little big. Make sure you put water protector on before going in the rain.

I just ordered this on Saturday night, it got here on Monday. Like everyone has said, the ankles probably do need breaking in. I ordered the beeswax leather and even after a couple of steps in them I saw they were getting the little creases on top which I liked. The sole felt pretty comfortable. As for size, I wear a 10 for NIke/Asics. I ordered a size 10, it doesn't seem to run all that large to me, but people can have different experiences I guess. If it did run large, I could see only up to a half size larger - a full size is a little hyperbolic, from my view. Anyway, great stuff.

I bought these boots for our son for Christmas and he loves them. They do run big so I would recommend ordering a size smaller.

Ordered this boot for my daughter's boyfriend. Of course when I placed the order I order 1/2 size to big but Zappos excellent customer service was able to go the extra mile to get it exchanged for the correct size before shipping out! The recipient of the boot says that the boot wears great and looks great too. Very satisfied customer. Thanks.

Nice boots. I see why they are popular. The beeswax is a great choice. I wear a size 12 and followed the recommendation to go down to an 11.5. I had to return them and go down to an 11. These definitely run big because of the UK sizing.

Incredible shoe. very comfortable. Love the style. I like the way the shoe gently supports my foot while being very supple and flexible.
I was worried about durability, but I have had these shoes for a year and they still look great.
When they first arrived, they were slightly lighter than pictured, but within a week they darkened to look like hte picture, and stayed that way.
I was worried they would get dirty quickly, and they do pick up stains and spots, but most seem to fade away after a few days. A few spots have remained. I try not to wear them in the rain. But they are suede and I don't take care of them at all.
Also, the suede feels really nice and soft, but its very short suede. The fuzz doesn't stick out much. That's important to me, because it gives it a dressier look.
Only con I have is that I have high arches and I couldn't really put any arch support in the shoe because my heel would slip a bit in the back if i did.

The Desert Boot from "Clarks" is a great shoe! It is super comfortable and fits great if your feet are a little on the wide side. I purchased the bee's wax brown color and from the picture posted it is pretty accurate. The shoe actually falls a small tint lighter than the color in the photo. I ordered a half size smaller and they fit perfect! Great shoe and I will definitely buy these again!

Great shoe! In the beeswax configuration it can pass for semi dressy shoes for office work. After break-in, which I recommend wearing about the house for several days, they begin to conform to your feet. I walked though some pretty dirty and wet areas and the soles scraped clean on the edge of a step, and I didn't slide like I assumed I would. The crepe absorbs shock and is comfortable. I usually wear a 9.5 wide, and these are a 9.5 medium and they are pretty roomy. It could be wider though, but it's not bad. I used Doc Martens Magic Balsam on them to protect them for now.

This is the second pair of Clarks Desert Boots that I have ordered, had no issues with the first one but they were at the end of their life. Ordered a Oakwood Suede in 7 and 7.5 (hoping to use superfeet) as these aren't the most comfortable when walking 6-7 miles around a European city when traveling.
The 7.5 size came in and was to tight around the tarsals of the foot when superfeet was in and to small without the superfeet so I put it back in package and will return. As for the size 7, I was a little disappointed in the fact that these were clearly worn outside as before they were returned and sold as new. I will be keeping as it will take another two weeks for exchange due to my location. See picture.

These are my 6th pair of DBs and these are as comfy as all the others.
No real arch support to talk about, and when it comes to sizing I size one full size down.
I wear a 12 in Vans, but take an 11.0 in these.
Love clarks.

I’m normally size 11 and I ordered size 11. They fit perfectly. In your mind you are as cool as Steve McQueen the moment you put them on. But that’s not true. You’re not as cool as Steve McQueen.

This is an odd review, I purchased these boots for my teenage grandson as a Christmas present, I found out Granpa is not as cool as he thinks he is. They were too long for his foot, so I was going to return them, at that time he mentioned he really wanted black? I wore these same beautiful tan chukka boots through junior high and high school. If these boots had been my size I would have kept them. I would have paid return shipping, "my fault" but Zappo's "no charge" return was simple, easy and appreciated. I ordered another pair a half size smaller and in "black" (what a waste of suede), the following day. So now he has black pants, black shoes on order, to go with his endless supply of T shirts and will not wear the button down shirts I also bought him. I think I went off track somewhere, but I feel much better. The Clark chukka's are great and Zappo's is above the rest in service.
